Decent Inexpensive LED Lighting System
on July 2, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
The Sengled Smart LED Starter Kit includes three soft-white bulbs and a hub, using ZigBee to control the bulbs. These are not WiFi bulbs, the hub is required to control them, much like the Philips Hue system. The bulbs are pre-paired to the hub to make the initial installation simpler.
In my case, the installation was not simple. My home network is a mesh network (Google WiFi) which seriously confused the (Android) app. Turns out that Sengled is switching to a newer Android app, so make ABSOLUTELY SURE you get "Sengled Home", not the Sengled "Element Home" referenced in the instructions! This is their newer app that is under active development. Fortunately, Sengled Tech Support was very responsive and after a couple of back and forths, they pointed me in the right direction.
Once the initial problem with the app was resolved, it was very simple to set up the system. Plug the hub into an Ethernet port, fire up the app, then turn on the lights. . Download the app to your phone, follow the simple instructions, and you're up and running. Although the hub does require an Ethernet (wired) connection for the initial setup, it can be disconnected and used over your WiFi after that. This is important because it allows you to extend the control range. One hub can theoretically control up to 50 devices; however, I found that the ZigBee wireless range limited control to one or two rooms. A distance of 50-75 ft became a challenge for consistent control. Fortunately, you can use multiple hubs with the app.
The bulbs themselves provided bright, consistent lighting. They are fixed color, warm white, there is no way to change the color. The app tracks energy usage, which may prove useful to some.
Voice commands with both Alexa and Google Home worked well.
Pros:
* The price of the kit is little more than the cost of the bulbs alone and additional bulbs are not much more than standard LED lightbulbs.
* Simple installation with the new app.
* Sengled seems to be developing a whole line of home automation products that are controlled by the app.
* The app is under active development, with new features being added. The latest update added scenes, daily scheduling, editable schedules, and color controls, although the included bulbs are fixed warm white color.
* Tech support is very responsive and helpful.
Cons:
* Hub seems to have a somewhat limited wireless (ZigBee) range. This limits the area it can control.
* Setup requires an Ethernet port. It would be nice if setup could be done wirelessly.

Crazy Fast Gaming Monitor
on June 27, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
The Acer Predator XB272 is a crazy fast, 27inch, 1080p gaming monitor. It really pushes the envelope of silky smooth gaming with an ultra-high, 240hz maximum refresh rate and 1ms response time. State of the art (and affordablity) seems to be either 4K at 144hz, or 1080p at 240hz. It also includes Nvidia's G-Sync tech for adaptive frame sync, which makes it particularly suitable for Nvidia equiped gaming rigs. The controls include regular buttons and a jog button, and allow for a wide variety of settings and on screen displays.
Pros:
* Color and contrast are excellent.
* Backlighting is extremely uniform across the entire screen.
* Excellent sharpness across the screen.
* Ultra thin bezel.
* Control interface very easy to navigate, very intuitive, very customizable.
* Really sturdy base that twists, tilts, and adjusts for height, stays put where you set it, doesn't wobble or creak, and provides good isolation from desk bumps.
* Built-in 4 port, usb 3.0 hub.
* Three year warranty
Cons:
* Only 1 DisplayPort and 1 HDMI port. The DisplayPort must be used to get the higher refresh rates, HDMI port limited to 60hz at 1080p.
* Interfaces are versions DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 1.4, somewhat dated.
* Viewing angles are poor, off-axis viewing makes the display look discolored.
The Acer XB272 is a really good choice for a gaming monitor. The size hits the sweet-spot for viewablity, the 240hz refresh really pushes it above the crowd, and the price won't break the bank.
One final note, both DP and HDMI came with 'deep sleep' enabled. This kept the monitor from waking when the computer came out of sleep, which was really annoying. Once the settings were disabled, everything worked as expected.

Decent Kit, Not Great, But Good on Sale

Verified Purchase:Yes
Disclosure: I bought this for a 'not a GoPro' camera with a compatible mount. Quality is average, lots of plastic, but sturdy enough. It was inexpensive, I couldn't wait for shipping, and the parts I needed are working adequately. It was on sale at the time, which made it an acceptable value.

Best of the Current RoboVacs
on June 8, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
Our house presents a significant challenge to RoboVacs. We have wood, tile, and linoleum flooring with transition strips between them. Throw rugs of various sizes and depths are scattered around. Add to that two dogs and the challenge is complete!
RoboVacs in general are a significant time saver, but are not perfect. There is a certain amount of prep ahead of time (in our case it's picking up dog toys) that has to be done. They inevitably get stuck at some point, either under something or on the edge or fringe of a rug they sucked up. There is also manual spot cleaning because there are just some places the RoboVacs can't clean.
The Samsung PowerBot R7065 is a significant improvement over previous generations of RoboVacs. It's low enough to get under most furniture without getting stuck and did a really admirable job of trying to extricate itself from a 'stuck' situation. When it rolled the edge of a throw rug, it backed up, moved over, and tried again. It seems to do a really good job of avoiding obstacles and steps, although it would occasionally push small objects around. It was also very good at traversing differing floor types, onto and off rugs, for instance. It seemed to navigate well throughout and cleaned rooms fully.
The business end of the PowerBot is square and the brush extends the full width, so it can get into corners easily. It also has an edge detect that opens up a side vac. It doesn't need the whisker brushes that you see on the round units which tended to scatter dirt in my experience. It does a really good job of cleaning. It's also quieter than most of the units we've tried, with varying suction depending on the type of floor. The suction seems to be better than other units we've had. The dust cup filter is rinsable and doesn't need to be replaced often. The PowerBot appears to be well constructed and should be very durable.
There is an almost overabundance of control options. The PowerBot can be controlled manually from a top control panel (pick it up, put it where you want it to clean, push the button), dedicated remote control, phone app, or Alexa/Google Home. Setup was easy, including connecting to wifi. The dedicated remote has a laser pointer that can be used to direct the PowerBot to spot clean a specific area. There is also a magnetic strip that can be used to fence off areas.
The Android app worked well. It was a bit limited, but this may change in the future. All the cleaning options were available in the app. Scheduling was limited to 'once' or 'daily'. There was no option to set three or four times a week. There is a history map that gives a picture of where the PowerBot had cleaned. The map couldn't be used, for example, to virtually fence off an area, which would be really useful. At least you know where it's been. There was also no notification when the PowerBot gets stuck. Although it hasn't happened yet, it would be really nice to get a notification on the phone to go rescue the bot.
The minor annoyances can't take away from the fact that the PowerBot has done the best and most complete job of vacuuming of all the robovacs we've tried. It significantly reduced the amount of touchup vacuuming required to clean the house. Definitely recommended.

True WireFree Active Noise Cancellation Sportsbuds
on June 5, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
I got the Sony WF-SP700N bluetooth sportbuds primarily for listening to music at the gym, walking and cycling. They replaced necklace style bluetooth earbuds because I didn't like the wire/battery bouncing around the back of my neck or under my chin. The fit is excellent, they are very light, almost unnoticeable and they stay put in my ears. They may not be waterproof, but they are definitely sweatproof (this has been tested:^).
Pros:
Sound - Excellent. Clean, crisp, detailed, good bass without muddying up the midrange. Lots of preset equalizer options to tweak sound.
Latency - No perceptible lag between the earpieces, which can be really irritating and disorienting.
Noise Cancellation - Again, excellent, with options for on, off, ambient voice, and ambient warning noises. The ambient noise 'on' settings worked well for me. Both increased ambient noise volume over the 'off' setting. Ambient noise was imperceptible with noise cancellation turned on.
Design/fit - relatively low profile, nicely rounded, light, and stays put in your ear. The retention fin really seems to help.
Bluetooth - Easily pairs to multiple devices. Connection seems pretty stable, with no drops.
App Support - The app adds a lot of controls, is easy to use and intuitive.

Cons:
Microphone - for calls, no better than acceptable. These won't take the place of a bluetooth earpiece except for the occasional call during a session. External sounds were picked up, as well as some wind noise. I suspect Sony used the same mic for both voice calls and ambient noise pickup. If you need to make a call, get to a quiet place.
Mono call support - only the left earpiece is used for calls, the right one goes mute.
Controls - two small buttons, one on each earpiece. No on-earpiece volume control. The button functions are overloaded onto short press, double press, and long press. And for some functions you have to remember which earpiece to use. Plan on getting the app.
Battery life - ANC takes a toll, I got about 3.5 hrs on a full charge before I had to recharge. The case can recharge them twice and I got about a 50% charge after about half an hour.
The SP700N's are definitely worth your consideration, especially for the gym or other sports activities. The sound quality is really excellent for sportsbuds. The ability to switch between full ANC and ambient noise awareness is really nice and works very, very well.

Rylo 360: Making 360 Video Useful
on May 28, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
NOTE: Although I did try the iPhone app on a borrowed phone, this review is focused on Android phone app.
The Rylo 360 is really a new category of camera, capturing video in 360 degrees (spherical video), then allowing you to select the section of the image you want. The result is a standard Full HD(16:9) video. Think of it as an action cam that lets you point the camera after you've recorded the video. Or a VR cam The software is very impressive and is under active development for additional features and quality improvements.
The camera is small with two opposing fisheye lenses on either side. There is a display that shows the recording type, remaining battery life and recording time. The controls are simple, one button for on-off(long press)/start-stop recording, and one button to scroll through the recording type on the screen. The camera will record 360 degree video, 180 degree video (forward facing), and panaramic stills. Additionally, there is a small door to access the battery compartment and MicroSD slot and a MicroUSB connector. The camera comes with charging (microUSB to USB-A) and data transfer cables for either iPhone or Android. There is no desktop app or interface.
The camera feels very solid and should prove durable. It is not intrinsicly waterproof, however there is an optional Adventure Case ($69) that provides dust and water proofing (to 3 meters). Both the included everyday case and the adventure case have a GoPro compatible mount. The everyday case includes a small selfie stick, which was surprisingly useful at getting my hand out of the picture.
The horizon correction and stabilization are excellent, even rather astonishing, and are really the strong suit of the Rylo. I did notice that the stabilization is not quite as good in 180 degree as it was in 360 degree, but it was still very impressive. Handholding the cam in a car going over a speedbump showed no bounce in the image at all!
Video sharpness is good, but finished videos is limited to 1080p. The color accuracy is good, but the saturation could be a bit greater. Still photos are also limited to 1080p.
There is a bit of a learning curve for those of us oldtimers used to a viewfinder and following the subject, like you would with an action cam. The Rylo captures everything. It was actually easier to just hold the camera still and then 'follow' the subject later using the app.
Speaking of which, in the editing app there are both a 'point here' and a 'follow this' option. Follow this allows you to set an object and the app will pan and tilt to create the illusion that you were following the subject. It worked pretty well, although it occasionally went off on the wrong object, which was easily corrected.
Negatives:
- Bluetooth control and triggering are available in the iPhone, but not in the Android app yet, although it's promised soon. To control settings other than recording type you have to connect the phone and camera via usb cable, kind of a pain.
- The settings are very limited, even by action cam standards.
- There is no desktop app. While you may go directly from phone to display, doing any post production work means transferring from the camera to the phone to the desktop.
- The storage location for the spherical and extracted videos is fixed. Since most Android phones support a large microSD card, it would be really nice to be able to set in app where the videos get stored. Figure a gig a minute for storage space, so you need a lot of free space on your phone's internal storage.
- If it's not on Rylo's list of approved microSD cards for the camera, assume it won't work.
- Low light performance is poor.
Summary: This is a really fun camera, doubling as both a VR cam and an action cam. It doesn't require a VR headset to appreciate it. The really incredible horizon correction and stabilization allow you to take attractive video effortlessly. And it's possible to create multiple videos from one recording with different points of view, for example following different subjects. Each update seems to bring new functions to the camera, really looking forward to seeing what's next.

Good Things in Small Packages
on May 15, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
The Bose S1 Pro exemplifies the old saying "Good things come in small packages". The sound quality is excellent, even at high volume, with very little distortion. The sound dispersion is very even over a wide angle making it a near perfect portable for either small venue performances or as a monitor speaker. At 15lbs including the battery, with an integrated top handle, it's easily portable. I would catagorize the construction as quite durable.
Bose adds switchable equalization (AKA "ToneMatch") for 'flat', 'mic', and 'guitar'. There is also automatic 'positional equalization'. Internal sensors detect the speaker orientation and trigger Bose's Auto EQ, which recalibrates the internal audio settings for that placement. This is not a marketing gimmick, it actually changes the dispersion pattern and is a big factor in how well the S1 performs in different situations.
There are two combo XLR/quarter inch jacks with volume, treble, bass, and reverb controls. Set flat, the S1 provided plenty of punch for a guitar, with plenty of bottom end. The reverb was impressive and provided a very nice effect. A third channel, bluetooth or 3.5mm jack, has only a volume control and could be useful for rehersal, playing tracks, or playing music on breaks.
The included internal battery that can provide six or so hours of playtime is really icing on the cake. It makes the unit completely portable and eliminates the need for a wall plug. There is a crude battery gauge, but it's useful enough.
The only real negative is that there is no phantom power on the XLR inputs. Adding a battery powered phantom power box or a small mixer with phantom power is not a big deal, but it would have been nice to have it available on at least one of the inputs.
At $600, this is probably not for the casual user. But for a recording, performing, or even semi-serious amateur musician, I would highly recommend the very impressive Bose S1.

One-Pass Cleaning for Floors and Rugs!
on April 21, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
We have tile and hardwood flooring throughout the house, with throw rugs scattered here and there. And we have two dogs who, in addition to blanketing the house in fur, insist on bringing the yard back inside with them. Cleaning used to mean vacuuming the whole house to get up the fur and loose dirt, then mopping or steam cleaning the floors and spot cleaning the rugs.
For us, all that changed with the Crosswave Pet Pro! One pass cleaning! It really is a vacuum and a scrubber in one. We just go over the floor like we're vacuuming. The cleaning solution is dispensed by holding the trigger while you vacuum, and it's sucked back into a separate dirty water container. And it is dirty! We were amazed at how much gunk it got off the tile floors. We also tried it on the rugs; as a dry vacuum it worked well, but it really shined as a rug shampoo, using the wet clean option.
Setup was a breeze. It literally took us longer to get it out of the box than it did to get it clicked together to use. The instructions are clear and concise.
The minuses are pretty minor.
- It's a touch slower than just vacuuming because it doesn't have the storage capacity our vacuum has; you have to empty it more, and of course, refill the cleaner every couple of rooms. We'll probably continue to use a vacuum for the light traffic areas and use the Bissell for the heavier traffic areas.
- The cleaning procedure (recommended after each use) is a little involved. We found it easier to just pull out the tanks and roller and rinse them out in the sink.
If you have a critter around the house, the Bissell Crosswave Pet Pro really is a must buy. Not only is it an effective cleaner, it is a real time saver. We were very happily surprised at how well it worked.

Really 4.5 Stars!

I've been using Norelco shavers for years and I like them. They give a good shave, are quick, and don't irritate my skin. This one is no exception; it does everything well and adds some nice features to the low end of the Norelco line.
- The lithium-ion battery removes some heft and fully charges in under an hour.
- The usable 'shave time' has been extended to 50 min.
- A low battery indicator has been added.
- The entire shaver is now shower and rinse safe.
- There is a 'stubble head' supplied. I'm well beyond the stubble look, but if you're into it...
About the only negatives are that you can't shave with the charging cord attached; Don't know why but there are warnings against it. And there is no travel case supplied.
All in all, a really good value shaver, especially when it goes on sale!

Good Sound, Excellent Fit
on April 6, 2018
Posted by: rtbestbuy
from Bay Area, CA
The JLab Epic Sport bluetooth sportbuds are necklace style in-ear earphones that offer good sound with bass emphasis, three EQ modes, and a sweatproof design. The fit is really the strength of these sportbuds; they seem exceptionally secure and offer a wide range of fitting options. They come with six different ear tips and three different ear 'fins'. The over the ear hook was comfortable even with my glasses on.
The sound is good with some bass emphasis in each of the three EQ modes, which may not sit well with audio purists, but played well at the gym. Sound isolation is good but not complete, so you are always aware of your surroundings. Active isolation may be great for airplanes and offices, but for running, hiking, or really any physical activity, you need awareness of your environment (eg., cars).
Bluetooth pairing was quick and easy, no problems. There are voice prompts for everything. The control panel is small, but the buttons are well differentiated. As with all of these three button controls, the buttons are multi-duty depending on press length. It takes a bit to learn them all, but fortunately JLab resisted the temptation to add double and triple tap functions. A four hour stint using them ran the battery down less than half way, so the 12 hour claimed lifetime seems reasonable. That's good, because the charging cable is a USB to proprietary connector with attaches magnetically to the control panel. While it helps with the waterproofing, it makes it impossible to charge unless you're carrying the cable with you.
The microphone was no better than average, but voice was acceptable. External sounds were picked up, as well as some wind noise. These are not going to take the place of a good bluetooth phone earpiece for phone calls.
The Epic Sports are definitely worth your consideration, especially given the price point or if you have had difficulty with fit in the past.

What is the weight of the laptop? And what is the weight of the AC power adapter? Does it come with a giant and heavy AC power adapter?

The laptop is a bit over 4lbs and about 3/4" thick. Battery life if you're not gaming, or if you dial back the game settings is pretty stellar - about 10 hours for just general office type operation. The power supply is a bit of a brick, but not as heavy as other gaming laptop power supplies. I would guess about a pound.

Can i use hdmi to connect an external monitor with this laptop without losing performance?

Sort of. HDMI is somewhat bandwidth limited, so the refresh rate will be lower than the laptop refresh rate. Better to use the USB-c DP functionality to get a higher refresh rate on an external monitor.

Does the backlighting on the keyboard actually shine through the letters or just around the key?

It shines around the keys and through the script on the top of the keys. So for example on the "A" key illuminates the "A" and around the key as well.

yes, it's currently a 'Discover' feature and is off by default. If you mean can you define separate SSID's for the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks, then no.
