Awesome console! As a PlayStation owner for most of my life, I was pleasantly surprised at how cool the Switch is for practically everyone. I purchased this for my daughter, and admittedly have been sneaking it away during the nights for some classic gaming. We’ve even integrated the console into our family room, as the whole set up takes very little space, and has become something the family enjoys playing together on the big screen. I will definitely be purchasing another Switch in the future, especially with me being more of a gamer, thus I have to ensure I’m not hogging the system for myself, haha.

Great interactive/narrative driven horror experience. Considering the entire game revolves around the story, like an interactive movie, I found the tongue-in-cheek throwback sensibilities to be very fun - though also typical to these horror tropes, there are some cliches that will make your eyes roll. Many of these instances are more a result of not just the writing, but also the delivery by the actors - who look really good, even in 2022. The service provided by the actors can waver between great and terrible, ranging the spectrum in-between. However, as a whole, the experience is extremely well done, well acted, and definitely comes off more intentional than not. The gameplay is very basic, requires very little gamer experience to play, thus some might be turned off by this type of experience, as it comes down to walking, decision making, and some light puzzles. The challenge is keeping your characters alive through to the end, and there is plenty of opportunities to perish in some very cool ways. By the time of this writing, this game seems to have made its place as a classic, and the team has gone on to create The Dark Pictures Anthology - a series of very similarly structured games, of which have proven this original game to be something slightly more special. Here’s to hoping for another deep-dive narrative experience, whether it be The Quarry, or an eventual Until Dawn sequel…
A galaxy-spanning adventure awaits in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a new 3rd person action-adventure title from Respawn Entertainment. This narratively-driven single player game puts you in the role of a Jedi Padawan who narrowly escaped the purge of Order 66 following the events of Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.

I picked this up for $20, and truly feel like it was worth the upgrade. I played this initially on PS4, and had a great time, but I felt the game lacked in several ways. Not necessarily in gameplay, though there are shortcomings in that area as well, I’m referring to some of the technical issues. Nothing specific, just small stuff littered throughout the game, it was clear the game could use a little polishing and tweaking. So far, I can say the PS5 version cleans up a lot of those issues, and the game feels really good to play. Reduction of load times, and bringing the game up-to-date with enhancements to graphics and FPS, as well as the PS5’s haptic feedback controls, all make this well worth another play through. I can’t say I’d feel the same at a price any higher than $20-30. The changes aren’t THAT drastic, nor is there anything extra from the PS4 experience. For new owners, I’d definitely recommend this at full price, the game is truly a great Star Wars experience.
Fire up a wild ride across the cosmos with a fresh take on Marvel~s Guardians of the Galaxy. In this third-person action-adventure game, you are Star-Lord, and thanks to your bold yet questionable leadership, you have persuaded an oddball crew of unlikely heroes to join you. Some jerk (surely not you) has set off a chain of catastrophic events, and only you can hold the unpredictable Guardians together long enough to fight off total interplanetary meltdown. Use Element Blasters, tag-team beat downs, jet boot-powered dropkicks, nothing~s off-limits. If you think it~s all going to plan, you~re in for a world of surprises, with the consequences of your actions guaranteed to keep the Guardians on their toes. In this original Marvel~s Guardians of the Galaxy story, you~ll cross paths with powerful new beings and unique takes on iconic characters, all caught in a struggle for the galaxy~s fate. After the stumbling-bumbling Avengers video game, I really didn’t think we’d ever see anything else Marvel related coming from publisher Square Enix. Yet, surprisingly, here we are, and with Guardians of the Galaxy nonetheless. This game literally seemed to manifest itself before us, like a galactic cruiser emerging through a multi-dimensional space portal. At first, the game wreaked of what came before with the aforementioned Avengers game, but the magical space-dust is in the details. A single player experience that takes players on a story-driven adventure through the early days of the Guardians of the Galaxy, accompanied by action/rpg-inspired gameplay, and a vast variety of fanfare spread across a colorful and creative set of environments. Even more surprising, the game delivers on almost everything promised, and somehow offers up even more in some wonderfully unexpected ways - it’s a strange dynamic at first. The first hour or so, mainly the tutorial stuff, is paced to feel somewhat restricted, but I wouldn’t say it’s any worse than when other games do this - it is something worth mentioning though. Some might enjoy this time to learn the layout of the controls, and the feel of the overall combat dynamics, as most of the gameplay is built around giving your teammates demands via rpg-like trigger controls, while also controlling Star-Lord as a third-person action shooter. All of it comes together rather comfortably on the controller, and allows for some really fun, engaging combat. In action, the gameplay is actually pretty simple, and while the game offers a good amount of variety, I could see some players becoming fatigued, or lulled, by the end of the experience. I personally thought it held up for about 80% of my time it took to complete. However, where the gameplay eventually shows some cracks, the story here is 100% great, pure Guardians of the Galaxy. While this story is meant to be separate from the film, it clearly takes many inspirations - though I prefer this one much more. I felt like the developers took everything and turned the knob to 11, really letting the players flourish in the experience of participating in the story and game. At times, it felt as if the game was seamlessly switching from a video game to a CG movie, and even came together to feel like an interactive film, all while still having its other gameplay elements still in tact. Some moments in the story can carry on a little too long in-between the moments of raw gameplay, but never to the point of being annoying. Overall, this is truly a sleeper hit for me, coming out of nowhere, and then delivering far more than expected. The deep, engaging story blended with fun and exciting combat makes for a lot of dazzle-dazzle, especially with the rad soundtrack. The game does suffer from some moments where the storyline either goes on for a little too long, or the gameplay might lull out, but in the end, the balance of everything carries the fun through to the credits. I’d easily recommend this to anyone that simply enjoys a good, solid game - but if you’re a fan, then there’s even more here to be enjoyed.

This steelbook kind of sucks. The game contains 2 discs, but the steelbook comes with 1 prong meant for both discs. Should’ve been a double disc case on the interior.

I’m very excited to see this update of the original trilogy come to fruition. It’s not only a very revitalized experience, it also brings the series back to the forefront of gaming. The trilogy not only serves older players, like myself, but it also allows a whole new generation of younger gamers to experience these amazing games. I was playing the original Mass Effect before the idea of children was in my brain, and by the 3rd I was playing while parenting - now, my son and I are both experiencing Mass Effect together, and absolutely loving it. For some, this release may come with some gripes towards the aging bod certain aspects, mainly the look of characters in comparison to modern day graphical fidelity - but seeing as this is more a remaster than a remake, there’s a lot to forgive. And for players of the original, these models and graphics will probably look leaps and bounds better. The gameplay is tuned to play a lot smoother, thus feeling up to date with most modern games, if not a little better. What does remain the same has aged rather nicely, none of it really set me back in any of the ways a lot of dated games have when being remade - the team really took the responsibility of balancing old and new devices to heart. And in doing so, this trilogy has really been given another breath of life to continue its legacy (no pun intended), and I hope to see the BioWare team get a chance to revisit the franchise for a new game. Side note: I would love to see EA re-release the Dead Space trilogy in this same manner, as the ME trilogy has proven that there’s a fan base more than hungry for the preservation of older game experiences.
Through relentless roguelike gameplay, you~ll discover that just as the planet changes with every cycle, so do the items at your disposal. Every loop offers new combinations, forcing you to push your boundaries and approach combat with a different strategy each time.

Far from perfect, but so beautiful in it’s successes that it comes closer to perfection than it should. At this point, it’s not much of a secret that Returnal can be somewhat of a difficult game - and in that, I believe it’s not as hard as some others have had with it, but the game is challenging in its fireworks and fodder arcade-style combat - mostly due to the long, save-less, runs that requires a level of flawlessness that takes some time to perfect. At least for most, including myself. As said before, the save points are few and far between, and what lies between will cause you to live, die, repeat while losing weapons and items, only to put you back to the beginning for an attempt at a deathless run. Each cycle bringing a new layout of the land, or biome. It’s at the end of these biomes where the save points exist, but only after defeating a boss that will challenge every tool and twitch one has learned in the hours leading up to these encounters. While all of this may sound stressful, or even time-wasting, it falls far from misery, throwing some of the best feeling shooter mechanics I’ve felt in a long time, very similar to the fluid chaos of Control. Jumping and dodging are rarely unfair, if ever, always zipping you around like a well-controlled human pinball. Some tools, like the melee sword, stick with the player though runs, and provide even more power to conquer the strange life-forms of the wonderful worlds in Returnal. This is Control by way of a souls-like, but never lacking the arcade elements the production team made their name in perfecting. Strap in and get ready to dance!

So far, this model has been pretty good to me - looks great, easy functionality between my other (older) model, and supports all my other hardware without issues. My only complaint is the volume/sound. Compared to my other Vizio, same size and same model from a few years prior, this new version seems to have audio that sounds a lot weaker, causing me to turn the volume up louder, and the options to remedy the sound are very limited. It’s as if this particular TV was built with a necessity to own/purchase a surround sound set up. So, if you’re looking to run audio straight out of the TV, no surround sound or sound bar, it takes a lot to get used to. I’ve even experienced audio clipping issues when watch blu-rays, and I’ve attempted multiple players. I’m wondering if I might’ve gotten a model with issues, or if I need to troubleshoot my audio output options. With that said, I can only fault the set for some weak audio output, otherwise it’s been a good set-up that was well-worth the price (on-sale, got $100 off).

Cloudpunk at a quick-glance is very appealing, yet also underwhelming at the same time, and can only be described as a Spinner sim, or what could have been a classic PS1 Blade Runner game. Now, to go back to the part where I described the game as underwhelming: I picked this game up based on the cool cover design and description on the back. So, when I loaded this game, I expected some simple, but slick 80’s inspired artwork in-game, though that is definitely not the case. Instead, this entire game is built using voxels at their most simple - something that is very clear upon looking into the game outside of a blind buy - and while everything still looked nothing short of amazing in all its neon-drenched nights, I was still somewhat disappointed. However, I must admit, it did not take long for this minor gripe to go away, as it quickly became apparent that this particular style is not only apart of the game’s charm, it’s also incredibly necessary in bringing the player such an atmospheric and engrossing mini open-world. Cloudpunk as a breathing world is very much alive in every way, and has several districts to explore for side-stories and collectibles. At the center of the game is your HOVA, your flying car, which can be upgraded with a few mods - this car has a strange AI that ties into the story wonderfully, and is actually rather fun to fly around, even if just exploring the neon-drenched districts. The HOVA has a nice little realism feature with a gas gauge and vehicle damage - though the game does it’s job in ensuring these features are never game-ending. In fact, no part of this game will eve give you a Game Over screen, as this venture is purely narrative driven and exploration based. There is almost no challenge provided, no shooting or anything of the likes, and what is there is more time-based and only on a few occasions. Cloudpunk is more focused on creating a meditative experience. Juiced full of synth wave jams, this is a game that’s looking to give its players a lo-fi narrative experience in it’s beautiful world. Playing as Rania, a newcomer to the city, and on her first night as a delivery driver for the seedy company Cloudpunk, the player is tasked with doing some rather simple, and eventually repetitive, deliveries that usually come with a handful of extra narrative that help feed the main story. These deliveries, while various in nature, are the crux of the gameplay loop, though there are plenty of side characters to stop and talk to when exploring the city outside of the HOVA. Some of these characters will provide side content that will add some exploration variety to the game, it’s ultimately the same actions. This is where I personally would’ve liked to see more from Cloudpunk, as there is a lot of potential to add more activities that would tie-in to this world without much interruption - and could even just simply expand on what is already in the game, but I’m sure these sort of things were held back by budget. This game already seems to be doing a lot with what it’s been given, but given its prowess to make narrative it’s priority, I could see some cool improvements if a sequel were ever a possibility. One thing to note that is a cool feature is the ability to explore the city areas in either first or third person view, which is extremely helpful in terms of immersion. In the end, I’m okay with the design choice to use lo-fi voxels, I think I’d still rather see this game utilize a more animated look, though I’d hate see anything taken away from the beauty of the immersive atmosphere. The gameplay loop, and options, could definitely be expanded upon, though they are what they are in the game that exists, and I still had a good time with the game. The story was wonderful on several levels, even when it was somewhat weak in a few instances, there was still more than enough to keep me hooked for the 10 hours it took to finish. And when the credits rolled, I just sat in thought on how cool of an experience Cloudpunk is - far more than I ever expected to get when I first put the disc in. This game has heart, and it beats to a synth wave rhythm that’s weird and wonderful.
