Near and dear

Very much rooted in classic Americana, Superman: The Movie reflects a past of simple nostalgia from its brassy score, soft focus/norman rockwell cinematography, and the endearing (and slightly corny) performances. The movie doesn't really have a strong narrative, and personally the portrayal of Lex Luthor isn't my favorite, but it's Christopher Reeve as Superman, and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane that make this movie something truly special.
And just to say this for any current Superman film fans reading this, Reeve and Cavill are both Superman to me.
This is a required purchase for anyone who is a film fan, for anyone who is a superhero fan in order to explore the early years of the genre.

is it a Scorsese knockoff? yes, but......

The film is an amalgamation of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy, and it wears its influences on its sleeves, but almost to the point of having no identity of its own. But the movie is saved by Joaquin's performance, you pity him very much so, and you also empathize with him because we've all had bad days, and for him, as he states "all i've had are bad days" and you see that and hear that and you do wonder how many people have had lives like that, how many people were abandoned by society, by the government, and left to fend for themselves.
Now, I'm not making excuses for people's actions, but I think the film was timely for when it came out. Also....no, it's not that violent, and no... it won't cause people to suddenly burn down homes, or riot or whatnot because it's just a movie.

a piece of cinema for your home

Simply an amazing film on all fronts...the end, if you're a fan of film in general then Sicario is one that you have to watch at least once. And as an aside, watching it at home is great, but it still can't match the impact of the theater, from the opening sequence to escort mission in mexico to the sunset silhouette scene, but it comes so close.

Subtitles at last

To begin I will quickly mention the Steelbook, it looks very nice, much better in person.
Now, the movie itself, if you know anything about Nolan he has an interest in the concept of time, something he's been exploring since the beginning and Tenet is no exception. The set pieces are grand, the score rivals much of Zimmer's work, the cinematography is fantastic, but where the film falls short is the story and characters. Now, that's not to say that they're done terribly, because they're not, however with a film trying to explain the rules of the universe (pseudo quantum physics stuff) while also giving us a globetrotting James Bond spy type plot, and then interject that with 2 leads (Washington and Pattinson) who are shrouded in mystery we have a harder time connecting with...well...a lot; not to mention the mixing which causes much of the dialogue/exposition to be lost, something that subtitles can finally help with. I think if given another script rewrite to work on characters, and if not constrained by the IMAX 2 hours and 30 minute maximum runtime this would have been on par with Nolan's most popular epic "Inception" but it's not, but that's still okay.

One dorky, cool, weird sequel.

This sequel to the 2014 Gareth Edwards is a beast onto itself, but with its own ups and downs. If the 2014 film was lacking in monster battles, namely Godzilla, here the director has chucked Godzilla and his other monsters right at your face, if the 2014 was too dark...well....here we have kind of the same issue, but not as egregious, much is still obscured in darkness and/or debris, but it has a more pleasant color scheme overall.
The prior film had a fairly dull lead character, which was highlighted ever more so after the death of a certain character we all assumed was going to be the lead, while here the characters aren't empty vessels, and are instead given more idiosyncrasies, which while does give them more personality can also irk you. Furthermore, in the prior film the character motivation was straightforward, while here the motivations of 2 to 3 characters were a bit confusing so that might also bother you as well.
I would personally say it's a step above the 2014 film, but a step below Kong Skull Island because in Kong there was a fantastic blend of nihilism, fantasy, dark comedy, action, war with a sprinkling of anime.
After that rant I will say it's a fun watch if you're a dork for Kaiju films, even with all the issues.

Beautiful steelbook, so so movie.

To start, as it was said in the summary, the steelbook is surprisingly beautiful, and looks much better in person.
Now, about the movie....the video is great, the audio is fine (annoying mixed waaay too low), extras not half bad (I still will always want a commentary track), the film itself is....underwhelming.
The cast is good (minus one or two actors) and everyone is doing a good job, but it's the script that let's everyone down. Harley Quinn is sadly teetering between annoying and unlikable; you want to empathize with her, and to be fair there are moments where you do, but because she's front and center while also bothering everyone around her you end up siding with everyone else. But the rest of the characters are well performed and interesting and fun, Black Canary, Huntress, Black Mask, and Zsasz managed to actually help carry the movie over the finish line...but barely because the rest of the film is bogged down with one character, Cassandra.
Now I don't think it's okay to go after kid actors, so I won't, but I will say that the director did a poor job at getting her to give a decent performance, leading to most of her scenes to plummet and become the worst parts of the movie....and she's given the most amount of screen time after Harley.
In regards to Cathy Yan, while I think this film was....not great, you can feel that there is a good director there, but just misguided with a poor script.
So, can I recommend this? Yes and no, because this movie might work for some, but it doesn't work for me.

Best of the 3

Taylor Sheridan has written 3 of the best movies of the 2010s, Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River, and with Wind River he has gone above and beyond with characters and story.
Renner leads the film, and while I've never been the biggest fan of him, he shines here, rugged and stoic, but underneath we see a pool of sadness; if anything all the characters are given a similar treatment. But the undercurrent of the film is the Native American culture, how decimated and abandoned it has been by the US, and how lost many are, as it was said in the film "there's no ones left to teach me"

Watch the Director's Cut

I saw Doctor Sleep in theaters when first released and was a bit underwhelmed, the film felt clunky, ill paced, and I wasn't certain if more needed to be cut or more needed to be added.
But a little while later a director's cut was announced I needed to make sure how I felt, and upon the viewing it felt more cohesive, the added 28 minutes adds the heart the theatrical cut was missing.

It's great, minus the Iron Man joke

Ridley Scott one of the hardest working inconsistent directors in Hollywood hits it big once more. An ode to science and optimism, with a perfectly cast leading man Matt Damon shows us time and time again why we love him, and Ridley Scott manages to turns a premise that has been done before, Castaway but in space, into a breath of fresh air. Simply put, if you love films then you should watch this.

A decent, but bloated starting point

As a fan of the Harry Potter series and the Wizarding World I was excited for this upcoming series, and when Fantastic Beasts was announced I was ready. Upon seeing it I was entertained, but a bit disappointed because I felt the film wasn't certain which direction it wanted to go in, if it wanted to be a fantasy tale within the world for and from the perspective of fully grown adults/characters or if it wanted to have fun with the world and actually utilize the title given to it. And well what we got was a film that I found enjoyable, with a different perspective because we're not entering this world from the perspective of children, we're not being introduced to it from an a more or less "blank slate" protagonist, instead we're entering it from a fully actualized (and flawed) protagonist, which is fine and interesting. Furtermore we're coming into the wizarding world in the 50s and in the USA which I thought was exciting, and it can be (or could have been), but because we're re-entering this world from a different perspective and era and setting...….and in the middle of a new story it feels like the movie expects you to play catch-up despite it being only chapter 1. also…..it's not too well paced.....I will say that I'm likely biased to like this film due to growing up with the Harry Potter series.
