In the exciting fourth entry in the successful action series, an attack on the Kremlin leaves IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team falsely accused of international terrorism. Forced to go underground, they must race against time to clear their names while trying to stop a plot to orchestrate a nuclear war between the United States and Russia. The audio is precise and well-positionned. But do take care if screening this during the evening, or in places with thin walls or floors. Colors are solid, blacks are where they need to be. Not as grainy as later films. The IMAX sequences certainly shine here. Clear justification as an upgrade from the blu-ray. From a cinema standpoint, this was a better outing that MI:3, and that was in instant classic. "Rogue Nation" would raise the quality bar event further. Somehow, "Fallout" would be equal to, perhaps slightly better. Only the lousy second film failed as a genre thriller.

UHD defective, audio dropouts in at least 3 places

I once owned this in another format, and was looking forward to a massive upgrade. The visual quality on this UHD was quite high. Detail was stunning in spots. Colors were exceptional. The visuals alone speak to the promise of the UHD format on deep catalogue releases. There was a question of black crush in spots; optimal viewing might require bumping brightness 3-5 notches. Assuming of course that your copy works. Mine had multiple audio dropouts. The last resulted in no sound from that point onward. Known working setup, all other UHDs play in optimal fashion. I was expected a battle on the return. But the manager cited that a recall was in progress anyway, so I got my funds back. If ordering from NYC Best Buys, be careful. Perhaps overseas copies fare better.

Resolution, lighting, and color improvements are enough to justify the UHD, but barely. This should have had the quality of "The Avengers" but falls short. However, the release easily bests "The Winter Solider." Audio is solid, better than "Black Panther." The film is an instant classic, perhaps the greatest of all Marvel releases. Until of course, the Black Panther. Pacing, direction, suspense, action, it is all there. The acting speaks for itself. In its' wake, many will try to get to this peak without the investment and preparation of a multi-film arc. Many will fail. UHD 85/100. Genre Film: 90/100.

This does not price justify beyond the solid blu-ray. It is "Warner Brothers soft" in a few too-many places. "Civil War" had a better visual presentation. The lighting and resolution resulted in subtle improvements. At $30, the improvements can't be subtle. UHDs are supposed to completely obsolete blu-rays. (See: "The Martian", any of the Avengers UHDs.) I was so disappointed by this release that I may not buy another catalogue Marvel UHD release. ("Dr. Strange" may be an exception. I love that film so much, I'd tolerate an over-priced subtle improvement. But at the cost of skipping the eventual Guardians and Iron Man.) This should have been at or near the quality of the Avengers releases. Far from it. Beware. 79/100
The one that started it all! Experience the terror - from the beginning - with the first chilling chapter of the Alien saga, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver in her breakout performance as Ripley. When the crew of the space-tug Nostromo responds to a distress signal from a barren planet, they discover a mysterious life form that breeds within human hosts. The acid-blooded extraterrestrial proves to be the ultimate adversary as crew members battle to stay alive and prevent the deadly creature from reaching Earth.

The UHD is not elite. (See Blade Runner, Dunkirk, X-Men Apocalypse) But for the most part the lighting, dynamic range, and resolution set this far beyond the old blu-ray. But the planet the crew orbits had a distinctive, vibrant in the blu-ray. It can barely be seen in the UHD, the most glaring of the few visual flaws. Audio is solid, price is quite good. For $15, do not hesitate. The film itself is stunning, a landmark in horror and suspense. My rating: 83/100.
