I have always trusted APC for my power product needs--my computer's UPS has always been one of their models, and I have given their surge strips to my family on some occasions for their needs. When it came time to get a replacement for the surge strip I had been using for some of my A/V electronics, I sprang for this unit quickly. It has the outlets I need for all my devices in the part of the room where I use them, with adequate spacing around several outlets for bigger power adapters. The USB power outlets are also a nice touch, even though I currently have no need for them. I trust the brand for its reliability and protection, and I would not hesitate to recommend their products to anyone with similar needs.

Makes for a good replacement alarm clock

I knew I needed a new alarm clock when the radio on my old one finally failed. I ended up choosing this model because of its size and form factor, though I was initially surprised by how small it actually is (about 3~4 inches cubed). Having the clock preset was a nice touch, even though it is currently a couple of minutes ahead of every other clock in my place. The controls are fairly intuitive for anyone who has used clock radios before, though you will have to learn the placement of some of the buttons initially. The size makes a digital radio tuner slightly unfeasible, so there is an analog dial tuner instead, but I don't find that a problem since I only needed to set one station for my alarms. The display is bright and readable enough over a moderate distance. If you need a replacement alarm clock for any reason, and you're willing to settle for something of this size, then you should consider this model.

Perfect for legacy devices on new hardware

With my new iMac, I only get USB Type C connectors, despite that I still have Type A connectors on my devices; This little gadget makes it possible to use those older devices with my new computer. I actually bought two of them--one is for the USB hub I previously purchased, since its main connector is Type A, and the other is for spare devices like some of my outsized flash drives (which normally would have trouble fitting into a port due to their shape and size). Although this adapter is much shorter than Apple's own item, it costs less and does the job perfectly well in its own right. It's just right for certain tasks involving legacy devices on new hardware.

Keep using your older devices on a newer computer

I recently bought a new iMac, one of the new models with an Apple silicon M1 chip, and I knew when I ordered it that it didn't have any USB Type A ports on the back. Unfortunately, all my major devices still use Type A connectors; the obvious solution was to get a hub like this one, that could connect to the new computer and provide the Type A connectors I needed for my devices. So far, it works perfectly, as evidenced by the fact that my keyboard is hooked up to it (and thus enabling me to type this up). The only issue I have with it is that the power cord is just a little too short to reach my UPS, so I am currently using a plug extender to hook it up to the UPS. Apart from that, though, it works well, and is my saving grace for use on the new computer.

Remember, remember...all over again

Though it may seem an old chestnut by now, as it came out originally some 14 years ago, the film adaptation of V For Vendetta has seemingly greater resonance today than ever before. There are many parallels between the events of the movie and current events in today's sociopolitical landscape. I won't go into them here for brevity's sake, but a keen viewer will pick them out quite readily.
This package contains a new 4K transfer of the movie and some new extras; as I don't yet have a 4K TV, I was limited to watching the included regular Blu-ray Disc. A word of warning about this disc, though--it's the exact same disc released in 2008, when the Blu-ray format was just getting off the ground. It has a Dolby TrueHD track, but playback defaults to a plain-vanilla Dolby 5.1 track instead, so you'll have to change it yourself if you want lossless audio. Everything else about the disc is the same as before, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the movie otherwise. The 4K disc has Dolby Atmos and a few new extras exclusive to that disc, as well as the new transfer.
"Remember, remember, the 5th of November..." With a little help from this movie, you may never forget it.

The next level for an anime classic

So much has been said about this movie already, so I will only share some of my observations about what I got from playing it on my home system. As I don't have a 4K TV yet, I couldn't watch that disc, but the standard Blu-ray sufficed. For my first session I perused the Japanese Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track, and it has somewhat more definition of clarity than the original stereo track, although some of the dialogue could have been more aggressively mixed to keep it from being buried. The English subtitles were largely a direct port of the script used with older editions of the movie (with the exception of a line from Batou getting changed for no real reason, at one point). The picture overall was beautiful, except for some of the brighter computer screen images which looked a little oversaturated at times, particularly with complex graphics. The only possible disappointment was the use of The Passengers' song "One Minute Warning" in the end credits, which was used for the original American release of the movie back in 1996; because the original Japanese version of the movie is featured on the disc, they could have stuck with the original score by Kenji Kawai, but ended up not doing so. Apart from that, however, the movie holds up as well as it always has, as a true classic, and I would not hesitate to recommend getting it (again) despite any perceivable discrepancies.

When you need more ports for devices, this is it

Like many people, I had a problem with my A/V receiver: It only had one HDMI port for either a DVD player or a Blu-ray player, and I have one of each. The solution was simple: Get an HDMI switch like this one to hook them both up at once. Although I only needed it for two devices, it has ports for three, which is a bonus. It doesn't have a remote control like some switches have, so you have to change the port setting from a push-button on the switch itself, but that's not such a big issue. I needed a device that could handle 3D and high-end audio formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS: X, and I'm glad to see that it handled both those aspects perfectly. It's also supposed to handle 4K with HDR; as I don't have a 4K TV yet, I couldn't test that part out, but one day I hope to have a TV with both 4K and 3D so I could try out both. I needed something I wouldn't have to replace so soon, and this looks to be a winner in that respect also.

Satoshi Kon's 3rd magnum opus is a keeper

Through his all-too-brief life and career, anime director Satoshi Kon produced indelible works that bend the mind with multiple layers and twists. This film, his third feature project, is inspired by the John Ford classic Three Godfathers, and bears the highlights of his work. In the tale, Gin, Hana, and Miyuki are three homeless people in Tokyo; one Christmas Eve, they discover an abandoned baby girl. Instead of simply turning the child over to the police, they resolve to find her parents themselves, and what results from their quest is a series of adventures and incredible coincidences, that align in a most unique way. As the trio comes closer to finding the girl's parents, they have to look back on the paths of their own lives, and resolve the events that caused them to leave society.
The story is typical of Kon: Just when you think you have the action figured out, he throws a curve-ball at you that forces you to rethink what you just saw. Nothing is entirely what it appears to be, everything is related in certain strange ways, and it all works out to a certain satisfaction. This one's a keeper, not just for Kon fans or even anime fans in general, but for anyone with a love for complex stories that keep you on your toes.

Impressive for an experiment in cinematography

I originally saw this in the theater in 3D with its much-touted high frame rate of 120fps. Visually it was impressive, despite the seeming familiarity of the plot, but it looked too much like professionally shot video rather than film, especially at that rate. I waited until I bought the Blu-ray to get a better idea of how it looks at a more film-like level, and for the most part it's decent enough (apart from some black ghosting in the image for one nighttime action sequence). It's still fairly impressive for a movie of its type, regardless of the hype about the frame rate. It's just different enough to qualify for a day's leisure when you have nothing else to watch.

A must-have for anime collectors

To say this title is a must-have for anyone who collects anime is saying the least about it; I prefer to let my own experience with it stand out, as I saw this film no less than 9 times in theaters during its initial run, with the English dub (and 5 of those times were at the same theater). That, to me, is how good the story is, even in a language other than its native tongue (and I did get to see the subtitled, Japanese version in the theater recently). A period piece and an ecological fable that stands out in a big way, it speaks of finding a balance in the relationship between Man and Nature, and what can happen when that relationship gets unbalanced by human arrogance (as happens in the movie, and undoubtedly in real life too). This edition is worth getting even more so because it has two things going for it: The original soundtrack CD, which has been out of print in the US for more than a decade, and a booklet of interviews with filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and some of his staff. It's more expensive than just the movie alone, but ultimately well worth the investment.
