A nice way to relive Sega's glory days

I once owned a Mark II Sega Genesis (the redesigned version), and I loved it. I never quite got everything I ever wanted for it, and I felt a little sad to eventually have to give it up. This mini version of the original Mark I console brings back a lot of memories for me, although I think I need to relearn how to work the control pad again. (I don't remember having so much difficulty controlling a game with this pad before; I would personally prefer to use a joystick, if one is available.) The selection of games built-in to the console is commendable, although there seem to be some differences between the versions included in it and the original cartridges, particularly with Altered Beast (which looks more like a "remixed" version of the original title for the old console). Other than these and a few other minor issues, this device is a good thing to have around in times like these, when you may find yourself with more time on your hands than you would like to.

The end of a saga, end of an era
on April 10, 2020

Now that this, the final entry in the Star Wars saga, is finally out on home video, the question to ask isn't really "Is it worth getting?" but rather "Is it a fitting ending?" I thought it made a satisfactory ending to the series, when I saw it in the theater, and seeing it again on Blu-ray does not change my opinion, despite what the hardcore fans and critics may say about it. My only quibble, in fact, is that there's no 3D home version of it available, at least not in the US, since that's how I saw it in the theater and how I would have preferred seeing it at home. Apart from that, though, the movie is perfectly good on its own merits, and a fitting conclusion to both the saga and an entire era.

Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) didn't know why she was being hunted by a shape-shifting killing machine (Gabriel Luna) from the future. She just knew that her survival rested with time-tossed cyborg warrior Grace (Mackenzie Davis), veteran robot fighter Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), and aging, assimilated T-800 InchCarlInch (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Return to the storied sci-fi franchise for producer/co-writer James Cameron co-stars Diego Boneta, Steven Cree, Edward Furlong; Tim Miller directs. 128 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks English Dolby Atmos, French Dolby Digital 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1; Subtitles English (SDH), French, Spanish; deleted scenes; featurettes. Two-disc set.

Good, but not great: More Terminator
on February 7, 2020
Posted by: Dmonik
Verified Purchase:Yes
When I first heard that this movie was coming out, I wondered if it would be any better than the three films it was supposedly discarding in favor of a fresh storyline. It turns out that more of a good thing doesn't always make it better, and even though this movie has a few good concepts to it, it makes me wonder why they bothered to do it at all--it doesn't reignite the franchise as some expected it to, but it's not totally disposable product either. Changing the story elements and reintroducing some familiar faces, including Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, doesn't seem to be enough, though the Rev-9, the new villain, appears to be a nice variant on the T-1000. James Cameron worked on this, but he seemed to only be telegraphing it in this time; it's not as wholeheartedly entertaining as Terminator 2 was, despite that this was supposed to be the "official" follow-up to that feature. Regardless of these issues, though, it's a Terminator movie, and should hold something for someone watching it.

Cinematic history comes alive via Satoshi Kon
on December 20, 2019
Posted by: Dmonik
Verified Purchase:Yes
Among the limited offerings from the late, great animator Satoshi Kon was this piece, showcasing his multilayered style of storytelling that boggles the mind and entertains deeply at the same time. Documentary filmmaker Genya, doing a piece on the recently shuttered Ginei Studios, meets with its most famous actress, Chiyoko Fujiwara, who has become a recluse following her departure from stardom. With the aid of a long-missing artifact from her life, she regales the filmmaker and his cameraman with her life story, and in doing so she literally makes the two men part of the action, in a manner as only Satoshi Kon could handle. This title is an essential for Kon fans and anime collectors in general, not merely because it was among the few works he was able to produce in his tragically short life, but also because it is beautiful. moving, and complex enough to keep your mind occupied for the duration, separating fiction from reality as Chiyoko relives her past. This feature hasn't been on home video for the better part of two decades (it was originally released in 2001), but now it's on Blu-ray, and better than ever. Pick it up if you can.

A field trip to Europe with his classmates was supposed to provide Peter Parker (Tom Holland) with a well-earned respite from his superhero alter-ego of Spider-Man. But when he's recruited by superspy Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Spidey is soon back on the job and teaming up with the InchMysterioInch-us Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal)-apparently a hero from an alternate universe-for a dangerous mission that may not be what it appears. Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Marisa Tomei co-star in this fun-filled Marvel sequel.

Spidey's back at it again
on October 16, 2019

You may never have a vacation quite like Peter Parker does in this movie, but his latest outing as Spider-Man is well worth the price of admission. Here, Parker is suffering a little under the weight of being seen as Tony Stark's superhero successor, and even he isn't sure he can handle the task--until the revelations of the mysterious "Mysterio", one Quentin Beck, force him to take action. It's a rollicking ride across Europe as Spider-Man races to separate fact from fiction, and save his friends (and the rest of the world) from potential destruction, and the epilogue and subsequent coda serve as a one-two punch that will have you thirsting for more.
It's a great movie, but apart from from the fact that it isn't available in 3D (which was how I saw it in theaters), the only issue I had with the disc is that it tried to play everything--including all the bonus material right after the movie, without sending me back to the main menu first. But that's a minor issue compared with the actual content, which includes a short feature with scenes from the original TV ads, that serves to enhance the overall package. This is one vacation trip you'll want to take.

A good choice for a replacement cellphone case
on August 30, 2019

Verified Purchase:Yes
I recently needed to replace my old cellphone holster, so I decided to head over to my local Best Buy, and see if they had anything that would suffice. This case turned out to be just the ticket for my situation. I use a Moto Z3 with a Moto Mod power pack on the back for extra energy, and I needed a sturdy, secure holster that would accommodate both parts; not only does this case fit the size of the phone and the pack together, it holds everything in place very well and is easily adjustable on a belt, using the built-in clip on the back. A magnetized lid connection keeps the phone from coming out prematurely when I bend over, which is a real plus also, since I can't afford to have the phone fall out. In all, this makes a suitable replacement or starter case for people with specific cellphone needs (like me).

This is where it finally comes together
on August 23, 2019

Verified Purchase:Yes
When I saw this movie in the theaters, I was pretty well blown away by everything--the drama, the effects, the action, but most especially by how everything built up in nearly two dozen other movies finally came together, making a worthy conclusion to all that came before.
In the aftermath of Thanos' decimation of half of all life in the universe, the remaining Avengers are trying to pick up the pieces; when "Ant-Man" Scott Lang is suddenly released from captivity in the quantum realm, he goes to the team with an idea to use time travel, to get their hands on the Infinity Stones before Thanos could and undoing the damage he caused. But due to a hitch in the plan, Thanos finds out, and a whole new war begins for control of the Stones. It's everyone for everything as heroes return (in more ways than one) and some depart for good, and the final battle is a masterpiece of controlled chaos, with so much going on you may need a scorecard to keep track of it all. This is where everything finally comes together after more than a decade, and you shouldn't miss it for any reason.

Naruto's tale comes to an end at last...
on June 24, 2019
Posted by: Dmonik
Verified Purchase:Yes
At the time I write this up, I haven't finished seeing everything in this set, the very last of the Naruto Shippuden TV series releases, but there's not really all that much left. The set concludes the show with the adaptations of three of the Naruto Novels:
> The conclusion of Sasuke's Story
> The adaptation of Shikamaru's Story
> The adaptation of The Konoha Story, which has not yet been published in English.
Seeing the story of Naruto's challenges come to their eventual end reminds me of a quote from (I think) Mark Twain, who said something like "This tale, being that of a boy, can go no further without that it becomes the tale of a man;" certainly Naruto's personal adventures are over with this volume, and his life as a man is better seen as a supporting player in the next series, starring his son Boruto. But this makes for a good ending to a show that spent a long time trying to chronicle the efforts of a boy who, despite being devalued by his entire community while young, managed to rise above everything in his way, to become the greatest ninja alive. Especially worth getting if you've stuck with the show all the way through.

Captian Marvel takes it to the next level
on June 24, 2019

It's hard for me to talk about a Marvel movie without going into a certain amount of detail, but I will say first that Captain Marvel is not just a great Marvel movie; it's also a great tale about personal empowerment that applies also to a broader spectrum of people than those in the movie alone. Many can relate to this story, about how one person strives to be better no matter what it takes.
Carol Danvers, an Air Force test pilot, has been living as a member of the alien Kree culture for some time, with no real memory of her past. In 1995, that all changes as a mission against the shape-shifting Skrulls, the Kree's current adversaries, goes awry and Danvers is captured for vital information. When she escapes, she lands on Earth, and quickly makes the acquaintance of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury and his colleagues as she continues to fight for the truth behind her memory loss. A lot goes on here to fill in some of the blanks on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's backstory, especially concerning Fury, and ties in nicely with Avengers: Infinity War, bridging the gap to the next film.
There's a lot here also on Danvers herself--not just about her memory loss and the events that precipitated it, but also her drive and motivation to do better than before, to exceed everyone's expectations of who she should be and what she should be doing. This part of the movie is what resonates so strongly and makes it worth seeing again and again, and the period songs and fashion also help.

(Not quite) the end of Naruto's story
on April 6, 2019
Posted by: Dmonik
from Salem, MA
Verified Purchase:Yes
With this, the penultimate volume of Naruto Shippuden, the canon material is about 99.5% covered, with the exception of the material in the very last installment of the manga. Working together, the members of Team Kakashi--Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura--finally put an end to the power-mad Princess Kaguya and seal her away, along with her revenant child, Black Zetsu. The spirit of Hagoromo the Sage, with the help of the spirits of all previous Kage officeholders, brings the group back home, and tells our heroes how to undo the Infinite Tsukuyomi. But there's still some unfinished business between Naruto and Sasuke, and they proceed to the Final Valley, where they fought once before, to settle things once and for all.
After all that, there's still room for some more, so we get four episodes dedicated to the younger days of some of the characters, along with the first three episodes of an adaptation of the Japanese light novel dedicated to Sasuke (which is available in English at most bookstores). All this leads into the final set which should be available in a few more months to complete the saga. It's a fine time to finish a story that covers some six dozen printed volumes, and a good point also to watch - THE LAST - Naruto the Movie, which takes place after the main series ends and before the start of the adventures of Naruto's son, Boruto. It's all getting tied up together, starting here.

If it's an issue of which browser to use in a particular operating system, I personally used Firefox on my Mac to download the app. You should be able to download it onto your system through any browser you choose.
