JA Bayona is one of my favorite directors. HIs attention to emotion and ability to move an audience is second to none. So, I was intrigued when he was given one of the biggest franchises to work with. Sometimes, great independent directors can elevate huge properties and make them better (Taika Waititi, Thor 3). But mostly, the director is swallowed up by the machine of a tentpole movie. Unfortunately, I did not see a lot of Bayona in this movie. That said, it was still entertaining despite the humorously inaccurate science of lava proximity safety.

The first Hotel Transylvania was highly entertaining. The second one was a gem. This one was completely unnecessary and lazy. You could hear it in the actors' voices - they were bored... and so was I while watching.

If you can get past the blaring discrepancy between the period of the story and the style of the music (modern pop), then there is a heart-felt story told and performed by people who were clearly passionate about what they were doing.

Less than original, but still gteat

The original Incredibles was a lightening strike in the best way. Brad Bird is a brilliant animation director and never makes a bad film. Incredibles 2 is a great movie, full of action and heart, but falls just short of the original. It's probably only because it doesn't have the "newness" of the original - the "I've never seen this done before in this way" thing that the original had. But that's splitting hairs. Incredibles 2 is a blast. Get it.
