Beautifully complex movie

Luckily I read the book after I saw the movie. This was a hypnotic and coherent experience in the theater with only the climax reaching the same level of complexity of the book. The good thing is, the book has little to do with the movie save for a few surface-level details.... and this is a good thing. They are both brilliant and beautiful.

Regardless of the level of cheese and unoriginality to his core stories, his technical execution will always be leagues beyond the best. This was by far the best 3D experience I've ever had in a theater and the transfer to 3D Bluray is no different. Beautiful. looking movie.

The fact that this exists is a sign that Apple doesn't care about how much we have to spend to keep up with their technological advances. It seems that every other laptop they create requires that you buy additional accessories in order to make sure all your stuff continues to work. I hate you Apple. I never ready the book but I know there are rabid fans out there. Maybe that's what caused me to enjoy this experience. Certainly there were places and spots in this journey that felt very passed-over, and thin. But, overall, I enjoyed the story this was trying to be. DuVernay is a great director and I could really feel her passion and compassion coming across in every scene.

The original Pacific Rim is fantastic. Guillermo Del Toro is a master filmmaker that can conquer any genre he wishes. Stephen S. DeNight (director of this sequel) is a great director in his own right by bringing a lot of the grit and personality to the Netflix Daredevil series that made it so great. However, this sequel is a thin shell of what it should be. My guess is that DeNight was smothered by the studio system that can so easily snuff out originality and personality. Mostly, it's lazy - relying on what made the original great to pull it out of its own unoriginality. Stay away.

I'm a HUGE fan of the book. Read it four times now. One of the most effortlessly fun experiences I've had with any book. The fact that Spielberg did this adaptation is perfect in itself. That said, a lot of the book just wouldn't translate to the big screen as well as you would think. It took me a long time to get past that fact after seeing this the first time. Once you realize that this is simply another version of the book, then you will have a good time. It should never replace the book. The book should ALWAYS be first. But, the movie can be a great supplement to break apart the numerous readings of the book that you should undoubtedly have.
