As Best Picture winners go, you can't do much better than this still-terrifying psychological thriller. Jodie Foster gives her best performance as Clarice Starling, a novice FBI agent tasked with hunting a serial killer, and Anthony Hopkins matches her step for step as Hannibal Lecter, an incarcerated maniac whose devious criminal mind may hold the secret to catching Starling's prey. As 4K discs go, this Kino edition can't compete with Criterion's special-features roster, although the 4K transfer is a marked improvement over what Criterion offered.

As an example of Burt Reynolds's signature star power, you can't do that much better than The Longest Yard. It's a thrilling reminder of what we love about him: the easy swagger, the rough-and-tumble physicality, and the surprising quirkiness. And the movie around him is even better! Not only is it just a top-notch sports picture, but it illustrates director Robert Aldrich's favorite theme: the necessary struggle of the community against a corrupt authority. Just a singular '70s movie.

You don't go to a Busby Berkeley picture for lucid storytelling and naturalistic acting - no, what Berkeley delivers are madcap melodramatics and surrealistic music numbers. On those two fronts, Gold Diggers of 1933 is an unqualified success. Plus, the Warner Archive restoration is so needle-sharp, you might think you could walk right into the frame.

Wow - why is Black Sunday not regarded in the same breath as Seconds, The Manchurian Candidate, or Seven Days in May? Like those other John Frankenheimer pictures, this is a bracing political thriller, and one that goes places we're not expecting; the great Bruce Dern gives a chilling performance as an American suicide bomber who's equal parts violent and vulnerable. And that ending setpiece! Just an incredible piece of filmmaking.
Oliver Stone drew on his own real-life experiences for this harrowing Vietnam drama that won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Charlie Sheen stars as a young U.S. Army grunt who volunteers for frontline combat and faces the horrors of war alongside his battle-scarred platoon sergeant (Tom Berenger) and his empathetic squad leader (Willem Dafoe). Keith David, Kevin Dillon, John C. McGinley, Johnny Depp, Forest Whitaker also star. 120 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English; Subtitles English. Two-disc set.

I'm not sure Platoon has aged as well as I would have hoped. The documentary-style verisimilitude of the first hour gives way to a two-dimensional morality play straight outta Pilgrim's Progress: the simple archetypes and pulp plotting kinda override all the messy brutality and moral ambiguity. Still, it remains a signature war drama, and the 4K makes it look as good as it ever will (and pairs it with loads of excellent special features).

I'm not sure Inland Empire is the best David Lynch movie, but it's certainly the MOST David Lynch movie, a three-hour freak-out into his head that plays like a graduate-level survey of all his filmic/artistic obsessions. Not an easy sit - I love Lynch, and I struggled with this - but an endlessly challenging one. And if you can get on its same wavelength? A rewarding one, too.

None of these movies are very good, but that's almost not the point: what matters is, you get a lot of them, as well as a lot of opportunities to watch Jason Statham kick butt on screen. He's our generation's Stallone, and that's a very, very good thing (even when the movies aren't great).
A pointed and darkly humorous look at the American public's fascination with violence, director Oliver Stone's gonzo road movie stars Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis as Mickey and Mallory, two lovers whose bloody cross-country crime spree lands them in prison and makes them media-hyped celebrities. With Robert Downey, Jr. As the host of a tabloid TV show, Tommy Lee Jones as a crazed warden, and Rodney Dangerfield as Mallory's abusive father. R-rated version; 119 min./Director's cut; 122 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English; Subtitles English. Three-disc set.

This brazenly controversial satire of media excess and celebrity has lost none of its power to shock and upset - it's also as technically virtuosic as it was back in 1994. And the UHD Blu-ray is a marvel, expertly handling the many stylistic shifts the film throws at us.

The film is the definition of an imperfect masterpiece. But the transfer is great, as are the features. Now if only WB would stop cheaping out with their multi-disc spool cases…

The film itself will always be a fascinating mess, but Arrow's set makes it look and sound exceptional, with a host of terrific bonus features that help put its production in context.
