Good laptop, for the money Intel is better

Not a bad laptop, a bit on the slow side, but that is the only knock hence the 4 star rating. When I say slow I don't mean actually slow, I mean a bit on the slow side compared to other laptops in similar price range and that may be the AMD processor. Intel laptop just seem a bit more snappier.

Fatal Flaw
By kkessler from Ellicott City MD
First, Kudos to Best Buy for a return policy that let me work with receiver long enough to know that this issues was hopeless, and still return it.
TL;DR If you want to use ARC, look at a different receiver.
I bought this receiver to go with my LG OLED TV, on which the NetFlix app supports Dolby Vision, and, most importantly for this review, Atmos. In order to get Atmos from the TV to the receiver, you must enable Audio Return Channel (ARC), which allows the TV to send the audio signal from the TV to the Receiver through the HDMI cable. You can't use the optical cable, because it doesn't have the bandwidth to send all those audio channels. A side effect of activating ARC, is a system called CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) is also turned on. The idea of CEC is various components like the TV and Receiver can communicate with each other, letting the receiver know, for example, that the TV has changed the active HDMI input. It is up to the firmware of the device as to how it is going to respond, if at all, to this change input signal. This is where the firmware designers of Sony really messed up.
When the Sony Receiver sees the TV change it's input, it switches to a menu, to allow you change the input of the receiver. The problem is, this is a terrible thing to do. Here is an example of how that flow works in real life. I have a universal remote programmed to turn on my TV, avr, and cable box, switch everything to the right inputs, and have the remote buttons configured to run the cable box. So you press the Watch TV button, the home theater get configured, and you press the guide button on the remote to start looking for the channel that has your show on it. All of a sudden, the receiver switches to this input menu, so you can switch the receiver to the correct input, which the universal remote already switch it to. To add frustration, the remote is configured so the arrow keys work the cable box, so you have to dig out the receiver remote, just to get rid of the unnecessary menu. Now the logical thing to try is to program the remote to just send the input to the receiver command after some time delay, but the switch to the menu is so late after the TV's input switches, it isn't practical. When your are starting from powering up the receiver, it can take 30 seconds until this menu switch occurs, making fixing this issue with the universal remote impossible. I contacted Sony about this problem, and their answer was to turn off CEC, but that turns off ARC, and that means no Atmos, which was the whole point of this receiver.
The real solution is to have a setting in firmware to turn off this whole "jump to menu" behavior, but the Sony does not have that. The Denon 3300 I replaced this receiver with, has such a menu option, and it defaults to OFF, obviously because most people do not want this whole menu thing to happen.
From the "quality of sound that comes out of the speakers" standpoint, this receiver is about as good as the Denon I have now, but I could not recommend this AVR to anyone, because you never know when you might need to enable ARC, as more devices support the higher levels of Dolby and DTS sounds.

Wont get atmos through ARC anyway
February 13, 2019
I read your review, and I had a similar issue with another receiver and my LG OLED. I assume you have an LG because your problem sounded alot like mine. Its not the receiver, its the TV. I never had this problem with other tvs, just lg. I think it sends a signal to the receiver to change to the "TV" input, and most (if not all) receivers have a dedicated tv input which is different from the HDMI TV port. Also since no 2018 (and older) LG OLED's have eARC, dolby atmos would be blocked anyway, ARC only supports DD and DTS surround, not DD+ (which is the format netflix uses to encode the ATMOS meta data in). I bought a pioneer elite from magnolia and I was very happy with the sound quality, but I felt it lacked punch, I returned it for an Onkyo which gave me the punch but didnt play well with my OLED so i immediately exchanged it for this Sony and I must say im very happy with it. But it is still early. Anyway I know this is a day late and a dollar short but I hope this can help anyone who reads this review that have the same problem you had

Can you add surround sound speakers to this device since there are no speakers ports located on the back of the device?

This does not have pre or post amp outputs. If you want surround sound you have to feed the HDMI through a surround sound receiver.

Upgrade your home theater sound with this 7.2-channel Denon A/V receiver. It's compatible with Amazon Alexa for controlling electronics with voice commands, and its support for Dolby Atmos creates room-filling surround sound for a cinematic experience at home. This Denon A/V receiver works with popular music streaming services, so you can enjoy your favorite tunes.

Can you play streaming music to all speakers not surround sound while watching TV?

No, ive tried. The bluetooth or Heos are treated like their own video inputs. The only receiver i had that allowed for a different sound source to be played from the video source was Yamaha Aventage.

How can you hook up the subwoofer? It seems that this unit doesn't have a subwoofer port at the back.

It has 2 LFE outs.

Will this model works with Polk PSW10 sub woofer

I am currently using the polk psw10 and it works fine. This isnt the best suboofer so i will be upgrading. But receivers now in days all have LFE outs which are pre amp outputs. Receivers with LFE out are compatible with any powered subwoofer that accepts LFE.

What is the largest subwoofer will this receiver handle without losing sound quality?

This receiver has 2 LFE out's. This is a pre amp out meaning it is just a processed signal that carries the Low Frequency information without being amplified. Because this is not amplified a powered subwoofer must be used to amplify the signal. Moral of the story is since the subwoofer uses its own power and doesnt use any of the receivers power, you are not limited on size, power usage or efficiency. But your room size and characteristics will be the ultimate judge of subwoofer size. Remember, with subwoofers bigger rarely means better. Look for build quality, quality of materials over size as these will affect the subs sound more than size will.

Take home entertainment to the next level with this 55-inch LG TV. Its ~9 Intelligent Processor delivers true-to-life images on a 4K resolution display, and its OLED interface provides realistic, vibrant colors for a memorable viewing experience.

Is the oled55c8 compatabile with my 12-15 year old Bose sound system? How well will the tv perform on programming through Direct TV?

That is really a question of how you have you Bose system setup. IF your Bose system is HDMI pass through than you will not have any 4k HDR content on this tv because you HDMI 1.4 (or older) receiver will block it all. Dont fear tho, there is a cheap solution for this. Amazon has a product called HD fury AVR key, this splits the audio and video 4K signal from a source like a 4k bluray player and sends the 4k video signal straight to the TV and the audio signal to the receiver. As for streaming content, this TV supports ARC (audio return channel) on HDMI 2, so if you hook you receiver to this HDMI port the audio from the TV can be sent to the receiver, but there are 2 things, your receiver has to support ARC, and ARC cant not pass HD audio formats like DTSMA and Dolby True HD, it can only pass Dolby digital. But if your receiver is 12-15 years old, its going to get increasingly harder to incorporate it into your 4K setup. You may want to start thinking about upgrading your receiver, 12-15 years old is 3 HDMI revisions old and is considered 2 generations obsolete. I really dont care too much about having the newest things, but with HDMI revisions the way they are, I pretty much dont have any options but to upgrade as HDMI does, because of the HDCP handshake policies. HDMI 2.0(a or b) will not allow 4k content to pass unless every HDMI device in the chain is HDMI 2.0 and is HDCP 2.2 compliant. As far as direct TV, I would imagine it will be the same thing as I mentioned above, if direct tv has 4k content it will be blocked and downgraded to 1080.
