The best 4k blu-ray player I have ever seen.

I upgraded from a very capable Sony X700, I wasnt expecting much of a difference in picture, this was mainly for sound. I watched Ready player one on the X700 quite a few times so Im familiar with the visuals and audio of it. When I turned on the race scene for the 1st key on the Panasonic, my jaw, and heart both dropped!
The colors were so vibrant, the lighting effects were so visible and apparent, the edges were so clean and defined, and the Dolby Vision was like nothing I have ever seen before. The sound had a solid body like I havent heard before, it was defiantly front and center and demanded you attention. The bass was thick and powerful, the mids were perfectly audible, and the highs were balanced. I saw and heard things I havent before, and this Panasonic made me fall in love with the movie all over again. It brought colors and details out on my OLED that I didnt think was possible. This player just gets better, I put on Wreak it Ralph on Blu-Ray for my son. If I didnt know any better I would have thought it was a 4k bluray with HDR! It just looked so bright and vibrant, and the 4k upscaller did a beautiful job. I then tried another blu-ray, Christmas story, it did wonders, it took 30 years of that movie! This is by far the best 4k bluray player on the market, Panasonic's UB-9000 is $1,000 but it is meant or serious audiophiles with serious setups. The UB-820 and UB-9000 both share the same graphics capabilities, and sound is the same quality. The UB-9000 gives you alot more high quality analog outputs which the majority of us with a home theater wont us because we HDMI for all our audio. Trust me, if you have a great home theater setup, this player will complete it for years to come, and you will not regret this purchase.

Perfect for movie buffs

Denon did a great job mixing and matching features to hit a pricepoint for their high teir entry level receiver. At only $600, it comes packed with the meat and potatoes for creating an emersive movie listening environment. The receiver is rated for 80 watts per channel but it never sounded like it was struggling even at high volumes, the 4k video processing is perfect, and Audyseey works as advertised, but there are a few qwerks to get used to like always setting my fronts to Large, setting the crossovers to way below the speakers frequency response, but that stuff is easily corrected. All HDMI in are HDCP 2.2 and are compatible with Dolby vision, 4.4.4, BT.2020, HLG, HRD10 and since the HDMI's are 2.0b support for eARC and HDR10+ support can be activated via future FW update. So the good is out of the way, here are some things i really am not a fan of;
Menu is limited as far as information goes. No descriptions or explanations of what setting are or control. I am ok with the dated low res menu, but some people arent.
The receiver is powerful but its flaws do become more pronounced when using low efficient speakers. My Paradigms are all rated from 91-94db so they get plenty loud, but if you plan to use lower efficiency speakers you will have to turn the volume up higher, or speaker levels up to obtain a decent loudness which will raise the distortion. If you have a medium to large room (> 1,800 ^3) you may want to look into the x2400 or x3400 as the are more powerful. The other "make or break" thing about this receiver is that music playback is acceptable but definitely would not suffice for Audiophiles on a budget. There are much better options out there for music just a couple hundred more like Marantz. This system was geared towards Home Theater use with the ability to play music. Its perfect for people like me who will setup in an medium sized room, have high efficiency speakers, primary use is for movies not music. Do yourself a favor and make a list of things that your new receiver must be capable of. Do your research and find the receiver that best fits your requirements.

Amazing picture, very stressful to mount
on December 13, 2018

I have read and watched every review and comparisons on this TV. I have filtered through all the negative reviews and came to my conclusion that most of these 1 star reviews are people who damaged their TV during install and are salty that they just wasted their money. The 5 star reviews and all the professional reviews are all spot on, this is an amazing TV whos picture right out of the box looks like nothing I have ever seen before.
- Picture Quality-
All the hype around this TV is not like mainly everything else where its just fluff, its real.
The blacks are like a black hole, the colors are so vivid and their edges are so sharp. The motion is fantastic, even with no motion interpolation activated. Put it this way, the first thing I watched on this was the Thor vs Hulk fight scene from Thor Ragnarok. I forgot to activate the deep color in the menu and I was blown away by the picture, I then realized my mistake and turned deep color on, and the picture that I though could not get any better got so much better! The colors were so bright, the edges were so crisp, the blacks were so black, and I swear there was actual depth to the picture, mind you I still haven't calibrated the picture yet. The SDR 1080P content was very good, youtube TV through Xbox one X was crisp and not too much grain in the picture. I watched avatar on blu ray (I still dont know why they havent released this on 4k blu ray yet, it would be the most visually beautiful movie ever created) and it was absolutely stunning, I saw this in IMAX when it fist came out and I know it was 10 years ago, but this IMO looked so much better. The colors for SDR were so vibrant, and the blacks were so rich, if I didnt know any better I'd think it was in HDR. The C8 handles shadow detail very well, no grainy transitions between varying shadow darkness, very clean transition from dark to light. There is alot of forums and video comparisons between the Sony A8F and the LG C8, I looked at these TV's side by side at best buy and I was struggling to see any difference so I guess if you want to spend $300 more for brand loyalty, go for it, but if you go with the LG C8 you will not be disappointed.
-Sound-
I am not using this TV for sound so no review for this
-WebOS-
I use my Xbox one X for all my streaming apps so I will not be reviewing this
-Magic Remote-
I use Harmony hub for my devices, I will not be using the remote, so I will not review it.
-Mounting-
If there is any negative aspects about this tv it is the mounting. And its not that it is poorly designed or anything that is LG's fault at all, its just the nature of how thin and fragile the OLED screens are. Handling LED tvs is pretty straight forward, pick it up by the bottom and grab the sides for more support. But with OLED screens this is not the case, the screen is so thin, and so fragile that if you handle a OLED the same way you would handle a LED tv your going to end up with a broken screen like I feel most of the 1 star reviewers have. So naturally mounting this on my wall was especially stressful, I knew 1 wrong slip of the hand from either me or the person on the other side of the TV could end with a broken screen, after about 5 very long minutes we finally inched it in place to where we could lower the tv down on the wall mount. I have to say the relief I felt after it was finally on the wall and the screen turned on with no problems was as great as this TV's picture quality.
My words of advice, this is a very expensive TV, accidental user inflicted damage is not covered by LG and best buys warranty will try to replace the screen before they replace the whole set, so you could be without a new TV for quite some time if anything happens. If you have any kind of doubts to your ability to successfully mount this TV just pay the extra money for BB to come out and install it for you. I have alot of experience wall mounting TV's, and I was almost 2nd guessing myself on this.
Other than the stresses of wall mounting this tV, your going to really enjoy this TV, and it is worth every cent.

Fatal Flaw

First, Kudos to Best Buy for a return policy that let me work with receiver long enough to know that this issues was hopeless, and still return it.
TL;DR If you want to use ARC, look at a different receiver.
I bought this receiver to go with my LG OLED TV, on which the NetFlix app supports Dolby Vision, and, most importantly for this review, Atmos. In order to get Atmos from the TV to the receiver, you must enable Audio Return Channel (ARC), which allows the TV to send the audio signal from the TV to the Receiver through the HDMI cable. You can't use the optical cable, because it doesn't have the bandwidth to send all those audio channels. A side effect of activating ARC, is a system called CEC (Consumer Electronic Control) is also turned on. The idea of CEC is various components like the TV and Receiver can communicate with each other, letting the receiver know, for example, that the TV has changed the active HDMI input. It is up to the firmware of the device as to how it is going to respond, if at all, to this change input signal. This is where the firmware designers of Sony really messed up.
When the Sony Receiver sees the TV change it's input, it switches to a menu, to allow you change the input of the receiver. The problem is, this is a terrible thing to do. Here is an example of how that flow works in real life. I have a universal remote programmed to turn on my TV, avr, and cable box, switch everything to the right inputs, and have the remote buttons configured to run the cable box. So you press the Watch TV button, the home theater get configured, and you press the guide button on the remote to start looking for the channel that has your show on it. All of a sudden, the receiver switches to this input menu, so you can switch the receiver to the correct input, which the universal remote already switch it to. To add frustration, the remote is configured so the arrow keys work the cable box, so you have to dig out the receiver remote, just to get rid of the unnecessary menu. Now the logical thing to try is to program the remote to just send the input to the receiver command after some time delay, but the switch to the menu is so late after the TV's input switches, it isn't practical. When your are starting from powering up the receiver, it can take 30 seconds until this menu switch occurs, making fixing this issue with the universal remote impossible. I contacted Sony about this problem, and their answer was to turn off CEC, but that turns off ARC, and that means no Atmos, which was the whole point of this receiver.
The real solution is to have a setting in firmware to turn off this whole "jump to menu" behavior, but the Sony does not have that. The Denon 3300 I replaced this receiver with, has such a menu option, and it defaults to OFF, obviously because most people do not want this whole menu thing to happen.
From the "quality of sound that comes out of the speakers" standpoint, this receiver is about as good as the Denon I have now, but I could not recommend this AVR to anyone, because you never know when you might need to enable ARC, as more devices support the higher levels of Dolby and DTS sounds.

Wont get atmos through ARC anyway
February 13, 2019
I read your review, and I had a similar issue with another receiver and my LG OLED. I assume you have an LG because your problem sounded alot like mine. Its not the receiver, its the TV. I never had this problem with other tvs, just lg. I think it sends a signal to the receiver to change to the "TV" input, and most (if not all) receivers have a dedicated tv input which is different from the HDMI TV port. Also since no 2018 (and older) LG OLED's have eARC, dolby atmos would be blocked anyway, ARC only supports DD and DTS surround, not DD+ (which is the format netflix uses to encode the ATMOS meta data in). I bought a pioneer elite from magnolia and I was very happy with the sound quality, but I felt it lacked punch, I returned it for an Onkyo which gave me the punch but didnt play well with my OLED so i immediately exchanged it for this Sony and I must say im very happy with it. But it is still early. Anyway I know this is a day late and a dollar short but I hope this can help anyone who reads this review that have the same problem you had

Can you add surround sound speakers to this device since there are no speakers ports located on the back of the device?

This does not have pre or post amp outputs. If you want surround sound you have to feed the HDMI through a surround sound receiver.

Can you play streaming music to all speakers not surround sound while watching TV?

No, ive tried. The bluetooth or Heos are treated like their own video inputs. The only receiver i had that allowed for a different sound source to be played from the video source was Yamaha Aventage.

Will this model works with Polk PSW10 sub woofer

I am currently using the polk psw10 and it works fine. This isnt the best suboofer so i will be upgrading. But receivers now in days all have LFE outs which are pre amp outputs. Receivers with LFE out are compatible with any powered subwoofer that accepts LFE.

What is the largest subwoofer will this receiver handle without losing sound quality?

This receiver has 2 LFE out's. This is a pre amp out meaning it is just a processed signal that carries the Low Frequency information without being amplified. Because this is not amplified a powered subwoofer must be used to amplify the signal. Moral of the story is since the subwoofer uses its own power and doesnt use any of the receivers power, you are not limited on size, power usage or efficiency. But your room size and characteristics will be the ultimate judge of subwoofer size. Remember, with subwoofers bigger rarely means better. Look for build quality, quality of materials over size as these will affect the subs sound more than size will.

Take home entertainment to the next level with this 55-inch LG TV. Its ~9 Intelligent Processor delivers true-to-life images on a 4K resolution display, and its OLED interface provides realistic, vibrant colors for a memorable viewing experience.

Is the oled55c8 compatabile with my 12-15 year old Bose sound system? How well will the tv perform on programming through Direct TV?

That is really a question of how you have you Bose system setup. IF your Bose system is HDMI pass through than you will not have any 4k HDR content on this tv because you HDMI 1.4 (or older) receiver will block it all. Dont fear tho, there is a cheap solution for this. Amazon has a product called HD fury AVR key, this splits the audio and video 4K signal from a source like a 4k bluray player and sends the 4k video signal straight to the TV and the audio signal to the receiver. As for streaming content, this TV supports ARC (audio return channel) on HDMI 2, so if you hook you receiver to this HDMI port the audio from the TV can be sent to the receiver, but there are 2 things, your receiver has to support ARC, and ARC cant not pass HD audio formats like DTSMA and Dolby True HD, it can only pass Dolby digital. But if your receiver is 12-15 years old, its going to get increasingly harder to incorporate it into your 4K setup. You may want to start thinking about upgrading your receiver, 12-15 years old is 3 HDMI revisions old and is considered 2 generations obsolete. I really dont care too much about having the newest things, but with HDMI revisions the way they are, I pretty much dont have any options but to upgrade as HDMI does, because of the HDCP handshake policies. HDMI 2.0(a or b) will not allow 4k content to pass unless every HDMI device in the chain is HDMI 2.0 and is HDCP 2.2 compliant. As far as direct TV, I would imagine it will be the same thing as I mentioned above, if direct tv has 4k content it will be blocked and downgraded to 1080.
