Time to Retire That Awful Blu-Ray

Boy, was this a long time coming.
After having to endure a dated HD transfer full of digital noise reduction for over a decade, Paramount has finally gone back and given Brian DePalma's 1987 gangster classic a proper restoration and a brand new transfer for the film's 35th Anniversary and its UHD debut. It was well worth the wait.
The colors and black levels are much improved, picture detail is solid and the film once again displays a healthy layer of film grain. If there is any downside, it would be that there are no new extras to be had. That said, it is still nice that they carried any over in the first place.
The film speaks for itself, remaining a rousing piece of entertainment that hasn't aged at all. This is still my favorite film from Brian DePalma.

Those who thought they knew slacking San Francisco car valet InchShaun XuInch (Simu Liu) best didn't know him at all. In actuality, he was the son of Asia's most dreaded crime lord-the centuries-lived Wenwu (Tony Leung)-who'd had him trained from the cradle to be the greatest martial artist alive... and whose patience with him to come home and claim his infamous birthright has just run out. Action- and fantasy-packed screen bow for Marvel Comics' Master of Kung Fu co-stars Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh. 132 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.

Good Film Gets an Okay Release

I haven't been the biggest fan of Marvel Studio's Phase Four output of movies and tv shows so far, but I did find
Destin Daniel Cretton's 2021 effort to be one of the more entertaining films of late. One can thank a terrific cast led by Simu Liu and Awkwafina for that. The action scenes are fun, and while the film follows the standard MCU formula right up until the end, it is never boring.
Speaking of a standard formula, Disney's UHD release is similar to the other releases of Marvel's films: decent picture, sound that does the trick (if you turn it up) and a offering of supplements that are on the thin side. it does the trick, but they really need to start stepping up to the plate with better home video releases of these films.

A Beautiful Steelbook Release of a Great Film
on May 30, 2022

David Mackenzie and Taylor Sheridan combined forces in 2016 to deliver this brilliant independent drama starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges. The tale of a pair of bank robbing brothers (out to save their family farm from foreclosure) and the law enforcement official in relentless pursuit is well written, directed and photographed, all backed by a great score by the legendary Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
The Lionsgate reissue of the UHD doesn't offer anything new in regards of actual content. What it does offer new here is the packaging. The disc is now housed in a gorgeous steelbook edition that should be a must for fans of the film that don't have the movie in their collection yet. I usually will not go and do an upgrade simply for the artwork, but I was only more than happy to do it for this one.

A Fun Escape, a Worthwhile Upgrade

John Carpenter's 1981 action classic comes to the UHD format with a very pleasing transfer that more than adequately handles the massive amount of nighttime scenes with great ease. Shadow and picture detail are first rate, and the audio tracks are also solid (bonus: the original theatrical audio!). The Shout/Scream Factory extras from the previous blu-ray special edition have all been included as well on a separate disc.
As for the film itself, it's still a remarkably fun ride, one that made great use of its rather small $6 million budget. I never cared much for the 1996 follow up, but the original is one well worth owning and revisiting from time to time.
Another winner from Shout/Scream Factory. Highly recommended.

A UHD Set We Can't Refuse
on March 26, 2022

It's been a long time coming, and it was well worth the wait. For its 50th Anniversary, Francis Ford Coppola and Paramount Pictures have teamed up to release Coppola's iconic crime epic (and its two sequels) on the 4K UHD format. Each film has been given a 4K restoration and the results are nothing short of breathtaking. Gone is the over-saturated colors of the otherwise fine 2008 blu-ray set, replaced with a more balanced color spectrum that is rich in detail. For the audio, the 5.1 TrueHD tracks from the previous edition has been used here as well. It gets the job done. As a bonus, the original mono tracks for the first two films have also been included, which is very welcome. In addition, there are two bonus discs: one for the supplements old and new and the other for the two previous versions of "Godfather Part III" from 1990 and 1991.
As for the films themselves? You really need me to tell you about those? I will say this much: Coppola's revised cut of the third film, the 2020 "Coda" edition, helps the film tremendously. There are a couple of bits missing that I wish Coppola had kept in, but that is what that second bonus disc with the other two cuts is for.
This is easily the best UHD release of the year. As a lifelong Godfather fanatic, I seriously doubt I'll see anything better released on the market this year...unless Coppola surprises us with a 4K edition of "The Complete Saga."

Love it!

I held off on purchasing a Nintendo Switch for a while. I was hoping to get a PS5 or Xbox Series X (is that what the new one is called?), but I'll be retired by the time one of those surfaces. So, I decided to grab a Switch OLED unit instead and I am very happy that I did. The games I have purchased so far are a lot of fun, the screen is good-sized and the games look fantastic. Plus, I love that playback isn't restricted to one's television set.

Kurosawa's Masterpiece Stands Tall on 4K
on December 11, 2021
Posted by: spf781
Verified Purchase:Yes
If you were to tell me five years ago that one day we would see an Akira Kurosawa film released on the 4K UHD format, I would have told you that you're delusional. The new release of his 1985 masterpiece "Ran" proved me wrong. One of the legendary Japanese filmmaker's finest hours -and based on William Shakespeare's "King Lear"-, "Ran" is the story of an aging warlord who decides to divide his kingdom among his three adult sons. A move that sets off a series of events that set family member against family member.
Outside of the long out-of-print DVD edition from Criterion, "Ran" has had a bit of a rough ride on home video thanks to questionable picture transfers. The new Lionsgate UHD, using a new restored print from Studio Canal, seems to remedy said PQ issues. It still has a few small issues here and there, but overall it is a very pleasing picture with a solid soundtrack to accompany it. For some unexplained reason, there is an English dub track on the disc. Not sure why they would waste the space on such a useless thing.
My only other criticism is the sizable amount of supplemental material found on previous editions is nowhere to be found on this edition (rights issues, perhaps?). You can find the extras on the streaming version from iTunes, if you're interested in them.
If you're a fan of Kurosawa's films, or just great filmmaking in general, "Ran" is a more-than-welcome addition to the 4K UHD format.

John Carpenter's groundbreaking shocker that opened the floodgates for hundreds of imitators stills packs a scare-raising punch. Fifteen years after being placed in an asylum for killing his sister on Halloween, maniacal Michael Myers escapes and returns to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, in search of new victims. Jamie Lee Curtis (her film debut), Donald Pleasence, Nancy Loomis, and P.J. Soles star. 91 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English; Subtitles English. Three-disc set.

Carpenter's Classic Makes For a Killer UHD
on October 24, 2021
Posted by: spf781
Verified Purchase:Yes
Following an iffy debut a few years back on the UHD format, John Carpenter's 1978 horror classic has been given a great special edition release from Scream Factory. The new transfer is quite nice, but the real score here is that Scream Factory has rounded up the bonus material from multiple previous editions and included them here.
The great thing about the original "Halloween," outside of being a masterclass on how to properly make a suspense thriller, is that you can watch/buy it and not have to bother with any of the endless, lame sequels (and yes, that includes the 2018 rehash). It stands on its own, and will continue to do so long after the others have faded from memory (if they haven't done so already).

"Inglorious" Makes For a Glorious UHD
on October 24, 2021
Posted by: spf781
Verified Purchase:Yes
Quentin Tarantino's 2009 World War II epic "Inglorious B*sterds" has landed on the UHD format in an edition that should greatly please fans. The transfer is quite pleasing, matched by a very healthy selection of supplemental material. As for the film itself, it hasn't aged a day in the past twelve years. It's combination of action, drama and comedy still packs a wallop. This disc comes highly recommended.
