A Simple Favor is a fun ride but not a tense suspense thriller. It twists and turns on a dime and you'll have a great time ...and then you'll never give it a second thought. For me it was more of a rental than an invested keeper.
It was 1969, and the lull at a once trendy hotel on the California/Nevada border ended with a rush of clientele including an aging priest (Jeff Bridges), a vacuum salesman (Jon Hamm), a drifter (Dakota Johnson), and a soul singer (Cynthia Erivo). However, agendas and identities aren't all what they seem... and between a hunt for hidden bank loot and cultists arriving at the door, no one should expect a good night's rest. Stylish contemporary noir co-stars Chris Hemsworth, Lewis Pullman, Cailee Spaeny.

The story was nothing new but well told from a script that repeatedly rewinds to tell the same events from alternative perspectives, to dramatic cinematography and editing and to a cast that gives every moment their all. You could dismiss it as derivative, or you could surrender to a good time; the choice is yours.

It had never been seen before which makes it the first of it's kind. It has become a blueprint for all the efforts that followed it's formula. And it has never been bested. How could any serious film collector not have this in his/her home library? It has more than earned it's place of honor in mine.
Hugh Jackman delivers a fantastic performance as P.T. Barnum in this spectacularly colorful musical for the whole family. Motivated by a desire to provide a good life for his wife (Michelle Williams) and children, Barnum founds a destined-to-be-famous circus which proves to be, not only immensely popular and profitable, but also a place in which a group of talented misfits can call home. I'm a big fan of Hugh Jackman who is by far a great showman in his own right. And there are some fantastic and moving tunes composed for this film as well. The money spent on this effort is everywhere to be seen. Here's the problem: The script is sketchy. It covers a lot of ground, social, personal and political issues abound. So many of them that nothing gets experienced with any depth. The whole thing just baits and switches from one issue to the next. For example, this wonderful , amazing and well loved entrepreneur for no other reason than to stick in yet another social nod to relevancy decides to ban his sideshow of freaks from a promotional event. This gives them a justification to crash the event and sing the epic and empowering song, "This Is Me!" They never at any time confront or distrust Jackman for his decision to omit them and the movie just goes on without ever referring to that event again. The film abounds with events such as this. You name it (inter-racial affairs, marital issues, a big fire) it's in there, but it is all episodic and nullified by everything else that is crammed into the running time of this movie. It is everything and nothing all at once. I bought it and recommend it for the spectacle and the music, but the story is cliched, superficial, insincere and falls flat -- maybe from the weight of all it is trying to do.

This film was entertaining enough for another futuristic teenage survival flick. The plot developed in an engaging way and the adventure unfolded entertainingly. My problem with this effort was how it ended. it basically just stopped and then ran a series of scenes yet to come, like the preview of next week's episode -- only there won't be another episode next week. This is a movie. It's also a movie that did not do memorable box office success, so there is probably not going to be a DARKEST MINDS II next year, either. But hey it was worth the Best Buy Black Friday unbelievable price offer. I don't regret the purchase. Had a fine time with this one.
