Best Bang for your buck

I've had the Onkyo Tx-NR686 for a week now and it far exceeded my expectations.
To be honest I was suppose to purchase a flagship AVR ( Yamaha RX-A3080, Marantz SR8012, and Denon AVR-X6500), but i opted out for this entry level Onkyo AVR. The Onkyo TX-NR686 was on sale ($300), so i decided to give it a try. That night i took it home and set it up as a 5.1.2.
Speakers I'm using are:
Center: Def Tech Pro Center 2000
Front Speakers : (2) Klipsch RP-160M
Ceiling and Surround: (4) Def Tech Pro Cinema 600
Sub's : (2) Mirage Omni S10
4k Player: Xbox One S
Although, I'm using different brands the sound is well balanced.
Calibrating the system was a simple and user friendly. it took about 3 minutes to do and it did a fairly good job at calibrating the speakers. After calibrating i did some adjustments of my own to the Sub db because the dB level was to high. I set the SUB dB to -4 on the AVR. As soon as i had everything plugged to this receiver, i played Ready Player One on 4k. I fast forward it to the racing scene and WOWWWWW! The sound was clear and immersive. I can feel the LFE shaking my whole house. Pictures were falling of walls and my seat was shaking. It sounded better than the theater.
This receiver has excellent future at a price you cant resist.
Note: This AVR doesn't have 2 independent sub channels. Both sub outputs share the same signal, so it is important that you own subs with a phase switch. Running subs on the same signal without phase switch can cause sound you to loose LFE level. You can defeat this by Having Sub1 at 0 Phase and Sub2 at 180 Degrees Phase.
Must Buy.. picture and sound is good. I've had no issues yet.
you cant beat this price

Awsome CGI movie

Story:
When an alien attack threatens the Earth's existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace.
Video quality:
Pacific Rim cuts a swath of stunning destruction in high definition with a 1080p/AVC-encoded beast of a transfer that's about as impressive as they come. Colors erupt on screen and pierce the looming darkness in dazzling displays of primary-gushing brilliance. Skintones are warm and lifelike, even when the the palette pushes in more stylized directions. Black levels are as rich as the comicbook and manga inkwork they're meant to evoke, with heavy shadows, impenetrable storms and fittingly murky sea floors. And contrast is dialed in beautifully, without much in the way of unsightly crush or overcooked, oversaturated hues.
Audio:
Pacific rim was recorded with a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 and 5.1 surround tracks, a two-headed beast of a lossless monster hellbent on your home theater's complete and total subjugation. Battles roar, gears groan, Kaiju screech, rending metal screams, and explosions rock every battle scene, while a bustling, overcrowded Hong Kong cityscape attempts to survive beneath the combatants' feet. LFE output offers three sizes: big, bigger and biggest, yet never gets too unruly, overwhelming or out of control. Rear speaker activity is enveloping to the point of being engrossing, creating a fully immersive soundfield loaded with directional flourishes, ambient touches and unsettlingly smooth pans.

Picture Quality:
Revenge of the Fallen was shot on film but finished at 2K (not uncommon for effects-heavy films). Paramount's UHD, then, is presumably an upscale from that source. This is also presented at a steady 2.39:1 aspect ratio and is not the IMAX edition that was available on Blu-ray. But beyond any technical details, the raw image looks fantastic. Textural boosts above the Blu-ray are obvious even without checking back in on the previous release
Audio Quality:
The Atmos track shines in this film...

Great Autobot film

Now that bumblebee is out... one can see the relation it has with transformers films.
Story:
For centuries, two races of robotic aliens–the Autobots and the Decepticons–have waged a war, with the fate of the universe at stake. When the battle comes to Earth, all that stands between the evil Decepticons and ultimate power is a clue held by young Sam Witwicky. An average teenager, Sam is consumed with everyday worries about school, friends, cars and girls. Unaware that he alone is mankind’s last chance for survival, Sam and his friend Mikaela find themselves in a tug of war between the Autobots and Decepticons. With the world hanging in the balance, Sam comes to realize the true meaning behind the Witwicky family motto–"No sacrifice, no victory!"
Picture:
Transformers' upscaled-to-4K 2160p UHD presentation is a good one, thoroughly enjoyable and capable of delivering enough visual intensity and added stability to please. The image is impressively filmic, maintaining an even, complimentary grain structure throughout.
Audio Quality:
It now serves Dolby Atmos soundtrack, and it makes for as much a revelation as the 2160p/HDR picture. Even as the previous 5.1 track was killer for its time, the improvements -- not necessarily in raw clarity but certainly in spatial awareness and increased total stage saturation -- make this a quality step forward in the sound department.

Great WWII Series... “TomHanks is in it”
on April 7, 2019

from LA
The Pacific is an HBO series released in 2010. It is An epic 10-part miniseries that delivers a realistic portrait of WWII's Pacific Theatre as seen through the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines: Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge. The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, and to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.
This is another Great Tom Hanks series.
Picture Quality is stellar... delivering 1080 p.
Sound quality is in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and it is stellar. It is capable of producing excellent low end through LFE.

The greatest adventure of all time begins with Star Trek, the incredible story of a young crew's maiden voyage onboard the most advanced starship ever created the U.S.S. Enterprise. On a journey filled with action, comedy and cosmic peril, the new recruits must find a way to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind. The fate of the galaxy rests in the hands of bitter rivals. One, James Kirk (Chris Pine), is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. The other, Spock (Zachary Quinto), was raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. As fiery instinct clashes with calm reason, their unlikely but powerful partnership is the only thing capable of leading their crew through unimaginable danger, boldly going where no one has gone before.

Great si-fi film

Sequel to the 2009 Academy Award-winning spin-off of the classic 1960s sci-fi adventure series. Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise are called back to Earth after a devastating force from within their organisation leaves the planet in chaos and Starfleet in pieces. Determined to settle the score, Kirk embarks on a manhunt with the rest of his crew including Spock, Scotty and Chekov to find the party responsible before their whole world is laid to waste.
Picture Quality is fantastic... I can already imagine what the 4k version will look like.
Sound is in
Dolby TrueHD 7.1 soundtrack means business, and that business is sonic perfection. The track presents every element -- from the broadest action effect and largest musical score piece to the most nuanced sound effect and ambient support detail -- with striking clarity. The track is big, rich, and perfectly defined from the top of the highs to the deepest of the lows.

Well worth to own.. excellent true story film

This film is an example of true war heroe. The story is well written, but it’s not like the book. I bought it because I demoed it in a Magnolia design center at Best Buy. The demo was short and left me wanting more. I believe that it was the first 4 minutes of the film that I got to see. I was impressed with the action and picture quality of this film. The Atmos track sold me on this. This film will definitely put your HT Set-Up to a test.

EXCELLENT A/V
By ALEXRIZZA from SAO PAULO, SP
Hi, I'm an owner since 2009 of an YAMAHA A/V RX-V3067 7.2CH which I use with 2 amps Harman Kardon to become a 11.2 ch. I know everything about YAMAHA receiver and I decided to buy a new one with 11.2ch. Since YAMAHA does not have, I tested The Marantz SR8012 (powerfull but I dind't like the visual), DENON AVRX8500H ( to expensive) and thePIONEER SCLX901( which was ok but the sound was amazing) .All these 3 A/V has price over $2.000. So I decided to buy this RX-A3080. About the sound of every speaker: waht a huge difference from the previous V3067, the sound is clear, powerful and you can hear every music note. The setup of GAIN/Q FACTOR/ FREQUENCY for every sepaker is easy ,and the surrounds make a lot of difference. The A1 is a sound state of art . To experience all this features you must have premium speakers. I have 2 YAMAHA bookshelf (180w rms) for front, 4 JBL (110 Wrms) for surrounds), 4 HARMAN KARDON (100w rms) for front speaker presence, 2 YAMAHA (100wrms) for rear speaker presence and 1 CENTER HARMAN KARDON (300w rms). If you want to experience clear sound you must have this YAMAHA RX-A3080

Have you tried using the Surround Sound Decode format on the receiver? If so how do you like? Is the surround sound experience better than the Marantz SR8012?

Lack of technical support
By ChromecastUser from Philadelphia, PA, USA
I have been a great fan of Chromecast since its launch a few years ago and bought three of them (two Gen 1 and one Gen 2) prior to this purchase. I use them primarily for YouTube, Google Play Video/Music, Amazon Music, and Plex Media Server (for my personal collection of FLAC audio files and home videos). Recently I started shooting videos in DCI 4K and storing edited version in HEVC (h.265) at UHD resolution. Even though I have not upgraded to an UHD TV yet - my computer monitors are UHD - I saw the need to get a Chromecast Ultra so that I can avoid transcoding HEVC to h.264 and downscaling on Plex Media Server to feed the regular Chromecast, in addition I would like to transcode my older 1080p videos to HEVC to save storage space and the regular Chromecast cannot decode HEVC. While Chromecast Ultra excels at everything else, it fails miserably with downscaling UHD videos (regardless of h.265 or h.264 CODEC) for display on a 1080p display: the videos are shown in the wrong color space. This issue is specific to UHD videos played on 1080p TVs and monitors, and it impacts only the actual video, if any info (texts, thumbnails, etc) is overlaid on top it is rendered in the right colors, but regardless of what Chromecast-compatible app is used. I reached out to Google for support. Except the original chat session the communication has been one-directional, I have sent them screenshots as well as a sample video file. A week and a half later I have not heard ANYTHING back. My use case, while not the most common, is hardly unreasonable. With that in mind I am surprised this issue was not discovered in their software QA process. I would have stuck with them to work it out, however, if they had followed up, even if a workaround is not yet available. Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K is on sale this week. I bought one and it renders UHD video on FHD TVs perfectly. If you are heavily invested in video/music contents from Google Play, then Chromecast is definitely for you, which is why I still recommend the product despite my troubles; otherwise take a close look at the competition - I am glad I did. Knocking one star off for functionality, and another for the poor support experience.

Nice sound, difficulty configuration
By DrDre from Pittsburgh
The sound on this receiver is fantastic. It also has incredible wireless features which is the reason I bought it. The only problem I have is it sometimes switches on after I turn it off and the audio return channel sound which at one point did work now does not and I cannot get it to switch back. I’ve tried everything. I’m not sure what settings were changed to make it not work but it’s very frustrating because it’s one of the reasons I bought this receiver.

HDMI ARC not working = simple fix
June 1, 2019
I own both Pioneer and Onkyo and I've come across this same issue, but i figured out how to fix it. Note: that whenever there is new "software update for your AV," HDMI ARC will disconnect and or not work. Whenever HDMI ARC isn't working (outputting audio from your TV), follow this steps.
Step 1: Make sure that Your TV and AV Receiver are both Powered on and that your TV's input is on TV.
Step 2: Unplug Your Receivers Power Cord for 2 minutes and then plug it back in. (this would do a basic reset and you will notice that your AV stayed on)
if you follow these steps HDMI ARC should be up and running.
IF steps 1 & 2 didn't solve the problem go on to step 3.
Step 3: In your AV Settings Deactivate HDMI ARC and Turn it back on.
After this you shouldn't have any more issues.
Sometimes HDMI Arc doesn't work bc there is a delay and you'll notice that your AV didn't power on. If this happens simply change the Input selection on your TV 2 or 3 times and AV should power on.

The ultimate 3D surround experience that will blow you away. You~ve never heard anything like the JBL BAR 1300X~in your living room or anywhere else. More than just a great soundbar, it~s a full sound system. It features MultiBeam and six up-firing drivers~four in the bar and two in the detachable battery-powered surround speakers~that deliver massive Dolby Atmos and DTS:X 3D surround sound, centering you in your music, movies, and games. 1170W of total output power and thrilling bass from a 12~ subwoofer is more than enough to make the room shake. Though, you~ll never miss a word with due to our PureVoice technology, which makes sure the dialogue is clear even when other sounds are at their loudest. When you want to enjoy your favorite tunes choose streaming via either AirPlay, Alexa Multiroom Music (MRM), or Chromecast built-in that give you over 300 music streaming options. But that~s not all. Your choices are as unlimited as you are because you can also pair the soundbar to your Bluetooth device. You can even take one of the detachable speakers (or both for powerful stereo sound) out to your kitchen or patio and enjoy listening to your favorite music or podcast there.

I recommend getting Extended warranty bc it is cheap, you can get up to 4 years of coverage and it covers surges. Manufacturers don't cover surges.
