It is Quentin Tarantino and it shows the director evolution in story telling. The characters dynamics, the shout-out to times and places long gone show the love the director has for the cradle of the industry that has made him famous. Great performances by Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. Their interactions also a nod to the dynamic duos Hollywood used along the years. There is some peeking and poking to the industry. The ending breaks from the reality of what happened and in a way cements it in the Hollywood canon of "good ending", which is somehow satisfying.
