You need one of these whenever you are running any kind of equipment that needs to survive a power outage. Yes, it is not enterprise grade, but, for the price, it gets the job done and keeps vital equipment running for sometime.

When adding this to a PC, will I need to format the SSD once it's installed, or will the PC recognize the SSD drive? What steps are necessary for installation. And what is the best file format for the PC, NTSF or exFAT?

Windows will "see" the drive but you will need to format it to be able to use it. NTFS is best for Windows.
