I've never been too into the FE series, since the permadeath gave me anxiety, plus the series was never heavily promoted in the West. Remember when Roy and Marth were the new characters for one of the Smash Bros games and everyone was like "who?".
Unlike the grindfest of the portable FE Heroes, Three Houses has you following the story of a brand new cast of characters in between battles. As a newly recruited professor for the Garreg Mach Monastery, you are tasked with heading one of three houses (think Harry Potter and House Gryffindor) full of students, learning about them and teaching them new skills along the way.
The battle system in FE:TH eschews the traditional weapon triangle system from previous titles, which helps newcomers and feels more freeing not being locked into the axe > spear > cavalry or whatever roshambo meta.
Upgrading your students to have the best skills requires you to get out of your room and wander the grounds of the monastery, talking to the students and staff and joining them in activities like choir practice, chats over dinner, and tea parties. Each of the students has their own back story, and conversing with them and understanding their desires, likes, fears, and goals, helps with successfully completing tasks requiring that you know certain details about your wards.
When I mentioned that I had to have tea parties with students to get points to level up axe abilities for one of my main damage dealers, my wife perked up and after watching one happen, wanted to play the game herself despite never having played any of the previous entries. After hearing her squee throughout the intro after the first battle, I knew that it would be a while before I got my game back so that I could play. Thankfully she has her own Switch, so at least I can play something else while she attempts to talk to Claude about cats and fend off Sylvain's advances.

VR systems are maturing, and the new technology makes it easier than ever to set up and get started. With the Oculus Rift S, provided your computer has the right specs, setup is as easy as plugging one cord with a double end into two slots on your video card (or one on your video card and one USB).
I'm fortunate to have a RTX 2080 on my rig, so it has a dedicated extra spec USB C plug called the VirtualLink VR connector that is purpose built for VR systems to deliver the power and data bandwidth necessary to operate the HMD, so all I needed was a C to A adapter and to make sure that a DisplayLink port was open, and I was good to go.
The Rift S is compatible with the Steam store and Viveport, in addition to Oculus's own store, which means I already had amassed a library of a few games that had VR added to them.
I've been a fan of VR since the early 90s, when Lawnmower Man was playing on repeat on HBO. There was an arcade with 2 VR systems, one with a multiplayer deathmatch style game, and one with a car racing game, and I spent as much time as I could on them. When the first in-home VR systems came out (not including VirtualBoy) I wanted one so bad, but after trying it out the tech wasn't quite there, with all sorts of setups necessitating a dedicated room almost. The inside-out method of tracking that the new Oculus headsets employ allow for a simple setup (no setup in the case of the Quest) at the expense of tracking accuracy, such as very close to the face or behind the back, but compensating for those shortcomings is as easy as holding your arm a little bit further out.
As a piece of hardware, the Rift S is the sweet spot of feature, convenience, and cost. As far as the VR experience goes, it entirely depends on the developer, but the Rift S makes it easy to jump in and out of any of the experiences that are available. Because that's what we call them in VR world, experiences, not games, because sitting in a virtual room and tripping out that the thing you picked up is in your hand because you picked it up with your hand and lifted your arm and not by just pressing a button (even though yeah, you still pressed a button) really is something to be experienced without requiring the framework and systems to call it an actual game, it's just the loading screen you are experiencing. And it's awesome!

Keeping your credit card information in an online store to be able to get games whenever you want sure is convenient. Finding your wallet empty because you bought every game on steam is not so convenient. So setting a budget of what you'll spend on video games and buying a steam card for that amount really is a great way to keep yourself from buying that hot new AAA title at release, especially since it'll be marked down in a few months anyways. And really, steam has so many high quality games on sale for a few dollars or less that a $100 would make an awesome gift for any pc gamer, especially ones that give you tips on budget friendly gaming in the review section of your favorite tech store.

This game is a lot of fun. It's similar to Toad's Treasure Hunt in that the level design incorporates the player having to navigate in three dimensions in order to uncover secrets hidden by the traditional side-scrolling forced perspective. It's nice to have a relaxed mode in which the enemy aggression is toned down, to keep the younger kids from getting frustrated (or also for some casual gamers like my wife that don't have the reflexes but love everything Yoshi). The only thing I have to say that is negative is that the music is way too repetitive.

When our old kitchenaid stand mixer that my wife got at a garage sale when she was a teenager finally mixed its last batch of cookie dough, there was no question about what we would replace it with. This mixer works just as well as our "vintage" one, though the accessories like the bowl and whisk look nicer, with a heftier handle on the bowl. Love that the old accessories still fit with the new mixer. And my wife is in love with the color!

The phrase "Up for smash?" somehow turned from being about playing video games to some sort of euphemism popular with the kids these days. As a result it's been really hard to send texts out to see if my friends want to play video games. "Smash tonight?" I'd send, followed by an enthusiastic reply of "yes, doors unlocked, hurry!". But when I show up with my Switch in tow, there's always a slight look of disappointment among the assembled parties, as I had once again misconstrued the invitation. That is until the joycons come out and a grand time of "5 stock no items" is had.
This is the fighting game that everyone has been waiting for since the Switch was announced. Every fighter that has ever been in a Smash Bros game, plus more you couldn't believe they added, with even more to come as DLC. Except Waluigi. Even if you don't have friends that'll play with you even though they clearly had other intentions when they invited you over, there's enough single player content to keep you busy, especially unlocking spirits in the new World of Light mode. Online mode is a bit of a toss-up as the big N still can't get a proper online system like every other console & PC, because "think of the children". Still, this is the Smash you know and love.

I always always always lose my wallet and keys. Having the slim in my wallet and the mate on my keys has been great for me. One time, since I've gotten them, I was unlocking my car so that I could put several items from the grocery store in. After helping my daughter in the car, I found that I somehow misplaced the keys so I could turn the car on. I looked in every pocket but nothing. Out came my phone to call up the app, and it turns out I had put the keys in one of the grocery bags by mistake so that I could have both hands free to help with the car seat.
I also love that if you have your keys but lost your phone, you can press the button to make your phone ring. And the replaceable battery means that it will be of use for some time.

I have hue lights all over my house, and they are all also hooked up to my google home. It's great for everything, except my daughter's bedroom. She's only 4, so doesn't have her own phone, but loves having hue lights that change color in her bedroom. So With this switch, I set up 4 different lighting profiles, and she can mash the buttons to her heart's content without having to yell at the google in the dining room from her room. just to turn off the lights. Great that it doesn't need batteries.

It's Diablo 3 with all the add-ons, portable. This was an easy one for me to buy, even though I have Diablo on my PC. The fact that I can just quit out and pick up right where I left off, plus can play multiplayer wherever makes this the port of the year (since D3 is a few years old now).
