Burton’s film holds up well, especially for our 10-year-old son, who laughed uproariously at the “forced dance” bit during the dinner party. The effects may look clunky to 21st-century eyes, but they’re perfect for the goofy horror aesthetic that Burton does so well. My only complaint? Michael Keaton! His improvisations aren’t as clever as you might have remembered, although his manic energy keeps things moving. But you may not have recalled how little time he actually spends on screen, a fact that kinda saved the film for me this time around. The transfer is colorful and looks filmic. And yes, Catherine O’Hara is perfect.

Another excellent Warner Archive release

If you have any interest at all in Nicholas Ray (REBEL W/OUT A CAUSE), Ida Lupino (ROAD HOUSE and a host of remarkable films she herself directed), Robert Ryan (THE WILD BUNCH, THE DIRTY DOZEN, and many, many others), or US film noir, pick this up. After decades of fair-to-poor transfers that didn’t do justice to its gorgeous B&W cinematography, this film finally gets its due. Scary, tragic, and deeply affecting, ODG demonstrates how sublime Ryan was at channeling postwar male anomie, and how focused Ray was on making viewers feel it—deeply. And Lupino? As remarkable a professional as any actor in her time, our time, or any other.

Good for what it is

A very nice 4K presentation and dynamite sound, enhanced thoroughly by the DTS-X treatment, can’t make this a better film than it is. The story can’t be beat—the ill-fated yet heroic flight of the Apollo 13 mission—but the script could use some de-sentimentalization, and the music never lets up on demanding us to think and feel exactly what the film wants us to think and feel. In other words, it’s a glitzy ‘90s Hollywood drama. Your mileage may differ, obviously, and that’s your right. For my money, though, THE RIGHT STUFF is a better choice if you’re looking for just one historical film about space flight. Still, the sound is great and the performances solid. (The same Oscar-winning production sound team from THE RIGHT STUFF got the same award from the Academy for this one, so your ears are in excellent hands.)

A nice suprise, nearly 4 decades later

When TRS was released in 1983, I saw Siskel and Ebert’s laudatory joint review and thought I’d like to see it, Then it tanked at the box office and I never had the chance. In 2020 I finally picked this up and watched it in 5.1 surround sound. Whoah! The subwoofer made me feel like I was breaking the sound barrier right along with Chuck Yeager! The characters are relatively one-note and some unfortunate liberties were taken with Tom Wolfe’s book, but the performances steal the show anyway and the flight sequences are imaginatively staged—incredibly convincing. If you have any interest at all in the history of aeronautics and space flight in the US, see it. And hear it! The 3-hour-plus runtime is a bit much, but the lovely transfer, the bombastic sound (an Oscar winner for it), and the thrill of flight carries it through.

This is a by-the-book action/suspense film with a dynamite caper at its center: if the bus’s speed drops below 50 MPH, the bus explodes. Cleverly written for its genre, SPEED is a master class in how to make throwaway entertainment that doesn’t leave the audience feeling they’ve thrown away their money on it. It’s brilliantly edited for effect, and it won a well-deserved Oscar for Best Production Sound. The transfer could look better, though—there’s some ugly green crush visible in the dark areas of the frame about 2/3 of the way through, and the sharpness level is nothing special. Still, it’s the best the film has ever looked on home video. Worth your time.

Still new to me, but the Aria 2 has less glitchy WiFi connectivity than its predecessor. Once the Aria 1 had a network in its memory, heaven help you if you wanted to change it. I also like that the new model doesn’t require one to tap the surface with your foot and wait before standing on it. You just hop on and it calculates your weight. So far, so good.

Cameron’s films age badly in some ways; as with T2, ALIENS’ dialogue tends toward the clichéd action-film tropes, sometimes absurdly so. But the film has never looked so good, at least on home video. Bill Paxton eats the scenery so expertly that I cease to care about his haggard dialogue (he delivers “Game over, man!” like a Tony award depended on it). As an effects-heavy film from the era just before CGI took over, ALIENS is an analog gem that cleans up great for the digital age.

I dusted off my DVD copy of this film a few weeks ago and was chagrined at how bad it looked on my HDTV, even with a decent unconverting blu-ray player. The Blu-Ray of RESERVOIR DOGS fixes everything. The colors are muted, but that’s in line with my memory of first seeing the film in a theater. But the resolution is sharp and convincingly filmic. Nice to have the film back again.
