My 2007 DVD of the film looked great then and still does now, upconverted to UHD. But by comparison, seeing it in this 1080p conversion is akin to watching RATATOUILLE in color for the first time. The contrast during the twilight (daybreak?) raid in the opening scene is both dramatic and subtle, and draws you right into the Pixar world. Is it realism? Nope. But sometimes I wish reality looked like this.

I tried to enjoy the novel, because all the gaming lore it channels is straight out of my youth in the 1980s, but it just tries too hard. Thankfully the plot is salvageable for the purposes of a tentpole Spielberg film. The Blu-ray has an Atmos track—always a plus. And the price was certainly right.

The most recent blu-ray edition of 2001 looked great. This 4K version far, far exceeds it. Nothing like actually feeling blinded by sunlight reflected off model space stations. The print quality, contrast, clarity, and soundtrack options (either a “remastered” Dolbyized multichannel track or the ORIGINAL multichannel sound) all make this 2001 essential.

While this UHD 4K blu-ray player doesn’t have all the perks of the X800–it can’t join “5G” WiFi networks, for example—it does have something its older brother doesn’t: Dolby Vision capability. HD10 is nice, but if your HDTV is capable of handling Dolby Vision enhancement, the boost in color intensity and contrast make this player worth looking for. It also plays SACDs and a wide range of lossless music files, just like the X800, so this unit loses you very little while offering you, in my opinion, a little more than the more expensive Sony.
