Apart from a lot of dodgy CGI (the opening flashback excluded, which features some of the best de-aging effects this side of a Marvel movie) and the "been there, done that" vibe of the whole thing, Dark Fate is a much better movie than its poor box office showing, and I've no doubt more people will eventually awaken to its merits. If this really is the end of the saga, it could have gone a lot worse.

Apart from a couple bits (and characters) that go on way too long, DOUBLE TAP delivers on its decade-long wait and mostly avoids needlessly rehashing the first apart from the occasional (and effective) self-aware joke. The main cast's original charm is back and still firing strong, powering them through a plethora of laughs and slick zombie kills, with an extended single-take doozy of an action scene taking the spotlight. This one nutted up, all right.

That anyone walks away from JOKER believing it celebrates the title character's antics is befuddling. The music alone is telling half the story here, and every cue from Hildur Guðnadóttir's haunting score is a clear-as-day hint this is not a man to be admired or emulated. Only in Arthur Fleck's demented imagination is this about the rise of a superstar; for everyone else, it's an express elevator into psychological hell, with Joaquin Phoenix's thespianic godhood at the helm.

Upgrade in play quality, but limited streaming

I sought this model out over the lower-priced X700 because of its Bluetooth option, and in that alone it was worth the expense to cleanly connect to my headphones for late-night viewing. Play quality is also improved over my last 4K deck, with not only Dolby Vision (which, FYI, you have to manually turn off for non DV-enabled discs), and it's eliminated an annoying problem I was experiencing with the smearing of scenes with intense red lighting. The biggest downside is a lack of streaming options, with only Netflix, Prime, and YouTube built in with no apparent function to install more, but my TV already supplies whatever other apps I need.

Epic viewing with epic restoration

It's easy to see why Spartacus is so influential and considered "genre-defining" - it's as grandiose and melodramatic as one could expect an event film of yesteryear can be. It's also the least Kubrickian of Kubrick's works I've so far enjoyed; one can spot his visual signature in certain set designs and shot compositions, otherwise it plays far more like the work of Cecil B. DeMille than the director of Dr. Strangelove or 2001. The restoration, without hyperbole, is PRISTINE, so really I couldn't have picked a better opportunity to finally watch this.
