Touching classic

This intimate epic was a carefully crafted by director George Stevens as a prestige picture and was mostly successful. It’s appropriately in B&W, and if the widescreen ratio seems to damage the intimacy, it’s handled as well as could be hoped, and the performances are generally excellent, though Millie Perkins reads a tad too old as the title character (likewise Richard Beymer and Diane Baker), though such has often been common practice in Hollywood films. The supplements are extensive and generous, and for the discounted price you can’t go wrong. Pick it up before Disney makes this Fox title difficult to acquire.

We have already had two smaller Echo units awhile in the den and master bedroom. We got this for the master and moved the smaller unit to the guest bedroom. With the display it can now also serve as a clock while bring dim enough not to emit intrusive light, yet is still quite readable. Great for setting timers and reminders, etc.

My previous outstanding long ago acquired Cambridge Soundworks unit CD stopped working, and since I really couldn’t find anything comparable for sale new, I stumbled upon this Best Buy Insignia unit. It’s a bit oversized for the bedside table, but looks classy enough, and after setting it up have found the audio quality quite acceptable, if not quite hi-fi nirvana. FM reception in my area is quite acceptable, though the automatic scan setup didn’t work well, saving too many lower spectrum undesirable or marginal stations, thus requiring the somewhat cumbersome manual selection of preset stations. (Oh to have old analog dials make a comeback with FM signal strength capture!) The slot loaded CD player so far does fine, but I did purchase the extended warranty since a nonworking CD transport was what prompted replacing the former (admittedly more expensive) unit. I wish the blue clock display were dimmable because it’s frankly distractingly bright in a dark room overnight, but at this price point you can’t expect too many bells and whistles. I had to go to a different store to supposedly get a new in box unit, but it turned out to be an open box anyway, but supposedly intact per the open box sticker description; alas, I got it home only to find it missing the power cord. I took it back to the store, and they graciously provided a matching Insignia power cord no questions asked. Knowing how things are shoddily built anymore, I rarely have high expectations for inexpensive purchases like this, but I must say so far I am satisfied with the sound and ergonomics. If it lasts 1/2 as long as my previous bedroom clock radio CD player, I won’t complain.

Beautiful rendition of an iconic Kubrick film

Despite a few reservations about the slightly incorrect aspect ratio, lack of original mono soundtrack and trailer, this remastered version of The Shining is beautifully done and well worth the upgrade of the 4K format. The transfer could scarcely be improved upon, and the repurposed 5.1 sound is clear and immersive when needed. The SteelBook is to my taste much more pleasing than the standard slipcase cover, though I'm not in any way an avid collector of the metal casings. Recommended for genre fans, and a treat for Kubrick aficionados.

So far I have been extremely pleased with the quality, power, ease of setup, ergonomics of the display, remote, etc. - it is replacing a still excellent and powerful Sony receiver whose only issue was it is old enough it can't pass a 4K signal, so it's going to be moved to the secondary system. I wish the remote were backlit, but that's a minor quibble. I found it simpler to just manually balance the speaker adjustments than use the YPAO microphone analysis, and it all sounds terrific. There were many good choices at this price point, and I've usually gone with Sony units with SACD capabilities, but in the living room setup, that wasn't necessary in this case, and I'm counting (fingers crossed) on the long term reliability of Yamaha this receiver based on past experience. I did buy the service protection plan since it was an open box item, but it was in seemingly perfect condition upon opening it as reflected in the open box description.

One doesn’t expect a great script or acting from this type of popcorn flick, but they are adequate to move the story along enough to bridge the spectacle of the monster effects. I’m glad at least for now Best Buy is facilitating 3-D versions, which are sadly becoming rare. Some movies like this are enhanced by the depth even if it looks like you’re watching through a bit of a fog.

Enjoy movies and other streaming content with this Sony 4K Blu-ray disc player. Built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity allow for media to be streamed in high quality, while a super quick start mode minimizes fuss during use. This Sony 4K Blu-ray disc player has two HDMI outputs for simultaneous use with multiple screens.
I noticed there’s no display of movie run time or anything on the front of the player. Is there a way to turn on a display on the front of the player?

I have found that the wire antenna is not powerful enough but am having trouble finding another antenna that has the unusual connection on the rear of the radio. Has anyone found a alternative antenna that works well?
Any F connector (round with flush pin that pushes onto the round connector in back) will also work, not just the odd shaped connector that is supplied (though this one was sufficient for my reception area to receive classical WRR in Dallas, really the only station I was interested in). If BB doesn’t carry one, the usual online suspects will offer ones of greater length, though even those can be problematic depending on your distance from transmission towers. AM isn’t an issue since this unit doesn’t provide an AM band.

Why can I not get the Radio or the CD player to come up on the screen? Tried several times? The time was simple to get.
The input description should appear according to what is selected. Press the power button. If radio is chosen the station number should appear after it reads FM briefly; CD, BT (Bluetooth), Line In, USB, all appear sequentially by pressing the Source button on the remote, or the button immediately to the right of the front panel power button. If that doesn’t happen the unit is likely in need of repair.
