AN HONEST PORTRAYAL OF COPING

In Paul Mazursky's touching masterpiece, AN UNMARRIED WOMAN, the viewer could have been shown just another Hollywood movie about a woman dealing with divorce and a daughter's difficult adjustment to losing a cheating father and her mother's moving on, but Mazursky realistically depicts how a woman adjusts and makes a new life for herself through painfully being honest with her self-doubt, anger, frailty and readjustment to accepting another man in her life with a sense of reality. This is a tender, moving film that could have had a sift touch, but deals in an honest, straightforward manner about coping with reality. It's portrayal may not be what the viewer may want, but it's a look at what real life is all about, and yes, with fulfilllment in the end. Thank you, Criterion, for preserving another film of real meaning.

Brian's Song is one of my all time favorite films, and to have it in Blu Ray rocks. This film breaks your heat, not so much because Brian Piccolo passed away of his bout with cancer, but it's honest and heartwarming portrayal of a a true friendship between two men and how that friendship prevails. The performances by James Caan and Billy Dee Williams are honest and filled will the value of loveanother that shows the film viewer what such a friendship means in their being there for one another, no matter the circumstance. This memorable movie still brings tears to my eyes.

Terence Malick's masterful retelling of the life of Franz Jagerstatter, a poor farmer wo refused to swear allegiance to Adolph Hitler. The Austrian peasant farmer was made a prisoner and finally executed for his convictions. Malick's latest masterwork was shot on location in Austria, in the actual village and in the home where Jagerstatter lived, as well as in the actual courtroom in Germany, where he was convicted, and in the actual prison where he was interned. August Diehl's performance as Jagerstatter is a memorable portrayal of a simple man who says, "no," and suffers, only himself, but so does his wife and sister, where they lived. This is a heartbreaking tale of a simple man who stands by his convictions. His quiet act if resistance was treated as treason, yet in his unwavering beliefs, his love for his wife, Fani, and their three children, keeps his spirit alive to the end. Franz Jagerstatter is a quiet hero who chose to simply say, "no," to man's inhumanity to his fellow man.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a crazy cinema masterpiece that could only have come from the brilliant mind and creatively perefect vision of Wes Anderson. It's a kooky tale starring Ralph Fiennes in a unique and remarkable comic performance showcasing his magnificent talents. If that weren't enough, this is a motion picture to delight the eye and ear. Its zany tale unfolds through unforgettable performances by an endless line of so many fine actors, each having his or her moment of delight, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Saoirse Roman and Tilda Swinton to name just a few, but the icing on the icing on the cake is from Tony Revolori, who's portrayal of Zero, M. Gustave's (Ralph Fiennes) devoted sidekick, is a sheer delight. To further impress the eye and ear, this is a film masterpiece of glorious scenic design, awesome cinematography and an Oscar-winning musical score by Alexandre Desplat, that one will never forget.
Cinema brilliance is extremely rare, yet when it happens, it becomes a motion picture the viewer will never forget. Without a doubt, this unbelievably memorable film comedy truly deserves to be preserved in the Criterion collection as true cinema genius. Bravo, Wes Anderson!

Every so often cinema delights and warms the heart. Me and You and Everyone We Know is just that kind of cinema. Brilliantly written, starring and directed by a woman, Miranda July, it's no wonder that it was chosen, released and preserved as part of the Criterion collection's classic films. It's simply a strange and familiar journey about a pair of potentially unlike lovers, an original vision creatively told by July about loneliness, yet in the course of its storyline, two unlikely souls eventually find each other in a moment of total magic. Intimacy was never so touching.
