Great 3D for a good movie

When I first heard of the films existence, I was entirely skeptical, especially since the director of Gulliver's Travels (2010) was at the helm. Sure, I love Pokemon, but I wasn't sure that the film was gonna be any good. I mean, the director started out in animated films and handling a good CGI animated film (Monsters vs. Aliens) and then made a good movie in the form of Goosebumps, but combining the distaste of Gulliver and the usual disdain of video game films on general, just soured me. Luckily, they hit a nerve when they cast Ryan Reynolds as DP and that awesome trailer just sold it for me. I loved the film when I saw it early May 2019, sitting back and watching a humorous film with great CG and 3D, enjoying the heck out if it. Sure, the plot is standard detective fluff, which makes for fine Juniors First Film Noir, but predictable for the rest of the audience. The acting was fine, the camerawork (shot on film to enhance the noir-ish feel) was very nice and the sets and the CGI Pokemon look so cute and real. It's a fun film, but better in 3D if you can view it on the format.
Moving on to the PQ and AQ, the film looks gorgeous on the big screen, so it makes sense that it follows the same path on the small screen and you'd be correct. Even though I haven't a 4k BluRay player, the standard BluRays look incredible and sharp, despite a lack of increased resolution (it is a 2k DI, so it's an upscale anyhow) and HDR (which should make it look amazing in 4k), and is demo-worthy for the standard BluRay. The 3D though... Well it's top-notch! Several pop-outs, amazing depth of the image that feels organic to the point of it looking like a 3D native image, and a surprise lack of color loss. Truly, a spectacular 3D conversion and disc. The included DVD looks fine, but that's mainly my lending disc, so moving onto the audio. Yet again, the Dolby Atmos is spectacular, but sadly WB had yet again neglected to offer the Atmos on the 3D version, just offering a 5.1 DTS-HD, which also is amazing, but it lacks the 3D feel of the 11.1 option.
Extras are surprisingly kinda shallow, but it does offer some fun. Some nice featurettes on the designs of the Pokemon, some interviews with the cast and crew, a 3 minute commentary from Mr. Mine, and the best extra being Detective Mode. It is a p-in-p mode with several behind the scenes extras showing up throughout the film, offering some good stuff about making the film.
Overall, this is an awesome disc, begged to be seen in 3D, and some decent extras and a Detective Pikachu Pokemon card included inside, makes for a total must own!

HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Mon~e)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

A good, inaccurate biopiv

Space exploration is a favorite subject of mine, always amazed by the cosmos and wandering what is out there. It's even better when people from your home state help out with the space program. I love October Sky, a film about a teenager, Homer Hickham (A fellow West Virginias) who saw Sputnik, and decided to become a scientist and later did work at NASA despite living in the coal fields where it was either football or mining. Color me surprised when I learned of Katherine Johnson, a NASA human computer who was born here in WV. An amazing woman who helped out NASA with the first men in space, helped with the moon landing, and even helped chart a plan to Mars. So I was excited to see this film, but it came with a rather sensationalized story with many falsehoods, but still entertaining nonetheless. Katherine Goble (Taraji P. Henson, terrific as always) is working in Langley, VA as a human computer, with 2 fellow colleagues in a racially and gender segregated area, Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer, also terrific) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae). After the Soviets send Yuri Gregarin to space, they are sent to the Space Task Group in Houston, Texas, headed up by All Harrison (Kevin Costner). They are all extremely demeaning to the trio, especially by STG head engineer Paul Stafford (Jim Parsons). Over time, they earn respect for their courage and work efforts, and take down boundaries as well. I gotta say, this is a really good movie, with the acting being a stand-out, but this is a solid effort overall. Co-writer and director Theodore Melfi does really well with the material, though it's very sensationalized in nature (the famous scene where Harrison destroys a segregated bathroom sign cause of the half-mile walk to the other side isn't accurate). The screenplay has many cliches, character condensation and outright lies, but it still gives off a good message about women and how segregation is wrong. The 60s aesthetic is beautiful and the cinematography is similarly beautiful. Overall, a feel-good movie that'll entertain well enough, and will make you want to learn more about these ladies of NASA.
The PQ is mighty impressive for a DVD, with it carrying a nice detailed, standard definition image that upscales nice on an HDTV. The film, shot on 35mm and 16mm film, delivers a beautiful image with depth and details and accurate colors along with a nice, even grain field. The sound is also nice as well, with the robustly designed 5.1 surround sound track that has plenty of surround activity, but not much LFE, sadly. Overall, it's a nice DVD presentation. Moving on to the extras, the DVD doesn't come with all the extras, on the disc itself, but with the included Digital HD code, it bundles every extra on your digital service of choice (and the film looks even better in HD, and I'm sure is fantastic in the 4k UHD), but I'll stick to the disc, starting with a commentary with Melfi and Henson. Next up are a photo gallery, a five minute piece on the locations in Georgia used for filming, 2 featurettes from the longer documentary on the digital copy and HD copies of the film, which looks at the life and work of Katherine Johnson, and the films trailer complete the DVD. The 45 minute documentary is a must see that has plenty of BTS goodies as well, so use that digital copy to view. Overall, this a cheap way to get an HD version of the film with all the extras on the digital platform of choice, but the DVD is a nice way to view a nice film with plenty of extras on the DVD itself, but I'd recommend the Bluray or 4k versions to get everything in one place with better picture and sound.

I usually despise these little "gamble" boxes, especially since you don't know what you are going to receive, and the odds are printed on the box itself, but this one is a fun novelty. The designs on the toys are exquisite for a cheap doll and represent Rick & Morty faithfully. Totally worth collecting!

"Oh, Hai BluRay!"

The Room is considered one of the worst films ever made, amongst worthy contenders as Troll 2, Tough Guys Don't Dance and any film made by the likes of Ed Wood and Neill Breen. It is a drama that aspired to join the upper echelons of great dramas like A Streetcar Named Desire or Rebel Without A Cause, but instead is a classic for its terrible qualities. A screenplay with inept plotting; story threads looser than an untied shoe, ear-bleedingly bad dialogue, and nonsensical dramatic points. Performances that range from bland, to bad to just plain bizarre. Terrible direction, bad cinematography, random edits, pictures of plastic spoons and so.... much... football. The movie was directed by one Tommy Wiseau, who also wrote and started as Johnny, a man who loves his girlfriend named Lisa, who loves Johnny's best friend, Mark, played by Greg Sestero. Sestero, an actor without much luck or success until starring in this classic, eventually wrote a novel about the mystery of Wiseau, the making of The Room and the after-effects of this legendary bad egg, which this film, The Disaster Artist, is based on.
James Franco dons the terrible wig and the odd, but infectious, European accent and also directs this tale on the meeting of Sestero (James Franco's brother Dave Franco) and making the film while also going into their friendship and how the film affected their lives. It's fairly refreshing look on how a bad film is made (like Ed Wood, but only on one film), showing the pure ineptitude of Wiseau in every department related to anything artistic (His acting, Sestero's hilarious reaction to reading The Room for the first time, Wiseau buying a film & digital camera, shooting side-by-side because he didn't know what the difference was) but is a gold mine with very deep pockets (Another unseen side in a film of this type, with a crew member scared of his paycheck bouncing in a bank). Even though the making of the film is the primary focus, the real meat of the film is the personal side of their weird friendship, how it began, the unease of Wiseau being jealous of Sestero and his career that could surpass Wiseau in fame (Namely, a would be cameo spot on Malcolm in the Middle offered by Bryan Cranston himself that is killed by Wiseau out of rage) and a scene that escalated to a fight on camera over betrayals from each party. It is a hilariously yet sad and a kind of pathetic look into filmmaking of the bad variety. James Franco, who also directs, delivers a terrific performance with a spot-on Wiseau accent that easily could've been a parody but injects enough heart in the performance to easily make him a human being, no matter how odd of a character Wiseau truly is. The other Franco also scores as the caring friend of Tommy, with the rest of the cast being absolutely amazingly good as those people who suffered for their art, or lack thereof. In fact, everything in the film is great, offering a superb look at a garbage masterpiece of junk cinema.
Luckily the qualities of the film are transferred easily to this delectable Bluray combo pack. The picture quality isn't one of pristine condition, with the film shot digitally in low-light conditions oftentimes, which can muddy up the details, but it offers a sharp picture with clarity that could only be enhanced on UHD (Since it was finished in 4k, it would look great on that format). The audio isn't one to break the foundation of your 2-story home in the suburbs, but the 7.1 TrueHD offers a great experience with the lively LA scenes, music and dialogue reproduced without a hitch.
The extras are decent enough, but could've had a nice feature length documentary on the making of the film, maybe a full on shot for shot remake of the Room, or even a copy of The Room included, but what's here is a nice addition. Starting off is a funny commentary featuring the two Franco's and the writers, but as a treat, we also have Wiseau and Sestero themselves on board and it's worth it for those two alone. Great stuff. Next up are 3 featurettes with an EPK behind-the-scenes look, a look on how James Franco perfected that accent and celebraties talking about Wiseau. Lastly, there is a hilarious gag reel (Josh Hutcherson's Denny is the highlight) and a trailer complete the extras, along with a DVD with the same extras and a digital code to complete this decent package.
Overall, the film itself is worth it alone, but with a quality bluray presentation with some worthwhile extras, it's totally recommended.
