Survival horror games are not exactly commonplace anymore and, even within the context of said genre, The Medium stands on its own two feet as a singular experience. Heavy on atmosphere, emotive themes and existential dread, The Medium is built upon exploration, puzzle-solving, storytelling and mood-building as opposed to action and combat. With that said, you are not going to find a better game on the PS5 that offers the aforementioned gaming experience more effectively than The Medium. By the time the credits rolled and I had experienced The Medium in its entirety, I was wholly engrossed in the story and the characters' experience, as if I had just finished watching a great film. Despite the fact that The Medium is not a well-known or big-budget game, there is nothing cheap about it and is the best hidden gem in the PS5 library to date. Recommended most highly and sincerely to those with a penchant for games high in substance and low on gimmicks.

I bought the Switch with the intention to play Breath Of The Wild and Super Mario with my wife, thus creating the need for an additional controller. While I almost went for just another set of joy-cons, I ultimately decided to get the pro controller and I haven't put it down since. It has a very intuitive design and works for those of us with bigger hands. Highly recommended!

The Nintendo Switch feels like the only true gaming console out there right now in that its sole focus is games, rather than being some kind of all-in-one multimedia center. As such, the attention to the detail and the gamer's general needs are apparent and make the system easy to navigate, play and shut down. At the end of the day, isn't that what it's all about?
Director David Fincher's involving thriller tells the true story of the Zodiac Killer, a serial murderer who terrorized San Francisco in the late '60s. David Fincher is one of my favorite modern directors and Zodiac shows him flexing his filmmaking muscle to great effect. Focused more on the pursuit of the Zodiac killer than the killer himself, Zodiac takes cues from The Silence Of The Lambs but manages to discern itself amongst other similar films due to its excellent direction, intensive pacing and general attention to detail. Essential viewing for Fincher fans and highly recommended to those less initiated.
This birthday is anything but a party, as a group of teens at an exclusive private school are killed in a variety of gruesome ways, from suffocation to shish-kabobing. But are the murders linked to a grim secret from a new student's past, and can the slaying be stopped? Classic 1980s slasher flick stars Melissa Sue Anderson, Matt Craven, Lawrence Dane, and Glenn Ford. 111 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.

By the '80s, slasher films were truly a dime a dozen and while there are some gems lurking beneath the surface of Halloween, Friday The 13th, Black Christmas and the like, Happy Birthday To Me is not one of them. The pacing is slow, the acting lacking and the general premise just average at best. With that said, it is indeed a slasher film from the early '80s so all of the aesthetic clichés that have since been adopted in many contemporary "retro" films are in full excess here. Recommended to genre fans and, well, that's about it.
Journey to the faraway planet of Krull for a spectacular mix of sci-fi action and sword-and-sorcery fantasy. Heroic young prince Colwyn (Ken Marshall) must acquire the Glaive, a mystical weapon that will let him battle the monsters and minions of the evil Black Beast and rescue his captive betrothed, the beautiful Princess Lyssa (Lysette Anthony). With Freddie Jones, Francesca Annis, and, in early roles, Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane. 117 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English. Includes retro VHS packaging.

Krull takes many clichés from both fantasy and sci-fi and wields them to great effect. With an antagonist called the Beast equipped with his army of Slayers, you already know that you're in for a camp-filled ride and, as long as that's all you're expecting, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Sure, Krull isn't going to give you a whole lot of subtext but the locations, set designs and score are all fantastic and coalesce in such a way to give one a rich filmgoing experience. Recommended!

Vincent Price is one of the most beloved and talented of all of horror's stars (his talents went far beyond the genre, as well), and House Of Wax is one of the earlier examples of this. Utilizing a macabre concept to great effect, Price wields his character like a master swordsman wields a blade and the results are pitch-perfect. Essential viewing for any horror fan!

Many consider Touch Of Evil to be a kind of swansong for noir's heyday and while I'd personally disagree, especially when you consider all of the exceptional neo-noirs out there, it is nevertheless one of the genre's best. Playing on the exceptional talents of its stars, Touch Of Evil digs deep into the human psyche in a very multi-faceted way to not only reveal humanity's dirty underbelly but what lurks within its churning gut as well. A film like this is fatalism at its best and comes highly recommended.
During a post-Civil War Wyoming winter, a stagecoach bearing a bounty hunter (Kurt Russell), his foul-mouthed prize (Jennifer Jason Leigh), an ex-Union officer (Samuel L. Jackson) and a lawman (Walton Goggins) makes it's way towards Red Rock. The worsening snows force them to shelter at a general store occupied by a caretaker (Demian Bichir), a cowboy (Michael Madsen), Red Rock's hangman (Tim Roth), and an aged Confederate general (Bruce Dern). As the blizzard traps them within-possibly with no escape-resentments, greed, and hidden agendas emerge that might destroy them before the elements do, in Quentin Tarantino's moody and stylish sagebrusher.

I am the first to admit that I am not a Tarantino disciple - I love some of his films while feeling that the others are just all right. With that said, I do think The Hateful Eight ranks amongst his best, as it brings his characterization and dialogue talents to the forefront and exploits them in the best ways imaginable. The setting is terrific, the acting believable and the narrative development spot-on. There are no gimmicks here, just great filmmaking.

Combine the movie's description, packaging and opening H.P. Lovecraft quote, I thought I was in for something quite cosmic, profound and ominous. Instead, however, I was given an average indie flick that spent much more time focusing on average interpersonal character drama than developing the light, Twilight Zone-esque cosmic horror. The Endless wasn't a bad film, but I feel like its marketing doesn't give way to what you're actually given.
