Built in wireless?
If it states it has built in wireless can it be hooked up to our local carrier or does it have to be used just as wireless.
the "wireless" is "wifi." If your local carrier provides a modem which broadcasts a local "wifi" signal, then you're set. Wireless in this usage does not refer to cable or cell phone service, but rather a local wifi network.
The wireless standards are "802.11" plus one or more letters like a,b,g,n. If you have internet service, you probably have a "wifi modem" that broadcasts one or more of these signals. Many computers and modems that network also have an "ethernet" port which is a wired version of connecting computers that looks like a fat phone jack. Hence the "wireless" option--no ethernet port needed, it goes through the air as a radio signal.
