The DVD in my package had me taking wonderful shots the first day. The camera controls are intelligently placed for quick and easy operation. There are features that satisfy the novice and fine tuning controls for the most demanding professional. The best camera I have ever owned bar none.
I would recommend this to a friend!

How does this compare to the D40?

In a few ways:
The D3100 is 14.2MP while the D40 is 6.1MP
The D3100 newer technology (about 9 years worth).
The D3100 has a 3 inch view screen while the D40 has only a 2.5 inch.

what kind of SLR camera is best for action/sports shots

Im looking for a SLR camera that is relativly easy to use that takes clear action/sport shots.
Im looking to keep it around $1000-1200.
The Nikon D3100 with an EH-5a AC Adapter. I know it is somewhat impractical at sporting events. Find a cheap portable AC/12V power battery. In addition, you'll need a really fast memory card like the SanDisk Extreme® Pro™ SDHC™ UHS-1 Card (8, 16 or 32 gig). I have the 8 gig. You'll need a good zoom lens like the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR. It has AutoFocus, Vibration Reduction and really fast motor speed. Flashes are usually not allowed at sporting events so you can skip that.

That would put you just a bit over $1000 but near professional photographer's results. YMMV.

When you turn pro get a hold of an AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II.

How many images can the D3100 take in one burst at 3fps?

Basically, the D3100 will continue to take pictures at 3 frames per second until you stop pressing the shutter release. Now in reality you are limited by the battery in the camera. As the battery charge gets weaker the process slows down considerably ( 2-1.5 fps). You are also limited by you your memory card capacity.
On the plus side if you buy an external flash unit like the SB-900 you can raise you frames per second to around 4 fps.

Learning about the camera

Do you ever teach classes on how to use these cameras? I'm not very experienced and would like some information beyond the booklets. I find it much easier to take courses and learn by a professonal, all the different aspects of using these cameras. I also would enjoy this because I'd rather learn more about the camera than just using automatic. It seems a bit silly to purchase such an expensive camera and then just use the auto feature all the time. I'm also a jeweler and I've always found it very difficult to take photos of jewelry and not have shadows or glare off the stones and no one teaches anything about this in our area(at least not that I'm aware of), since it's sort of a special type of photography.
The DVD that comes in the starter kit, worked really well with me. I am a D-SLR novice and It was a step by step video I could pause and rewind. There was even a section about lighting that covered small object photography like jewelery. In addition, Nikon has other videos that cover using external flashes, lighting and shadow, like the Nikon SB-900 external flash, not to mention many other subjects. The perfect shot is in the photographer's eye. The camera is just an aid to capture the moment. These videos will help you to get the most out of your camera. Experience is how you develop your own photographer eye. These videos will cover a basic of lens selection, camera lens filters (helps reduce glare), flash and lighting. Your local area community college might have a photography class that will give you more guidance in things like composition.

When you are taking videos can you use the flash ?

Yes, but it eats the batteries for external flashes like the SB-900. You might want to look at the SD-9 battery pack in that case.

I have a Nkion SLR camera. Will my lens fit the digital model?

Most of the time, yes it will. However, you will not get all the benefits of using a lens designed for the D-SLR.

How far will it zoom?

Basically it will depend on what lens you are using. The standard lens is good for shots from about 1 1/2 meters to about 20 meters for a human subject. The good news is that this is not the final answer. If you need further range, then get a much larger zoom lens. There are a wide variety of interchangeable telephoto lenses available for the Nikon D3100.

Can you connect the camera to a laptop and view the live image? Like a remote live view.

You can, but you will need Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 Software Full Version for Nikon DSLR Cameras software on your laptop. It works via a USB cable from the laptop to camera. All the controls you have with the Camera can be adjusted by the laptop, even the click of the shutter.

Which of these types of cameras have the best lens for long distance?

My daugher is a gymnast and often she is clear across a large venue when she is performing so a lens that can ;pull her in much closer works better for us, my camcorder(that I currently own) magnifies up to 35X which has been great for this especially when filming video, so I was wondering how far away I can take a photo on this camera or would I better off with a different camera with a longer zoom or a camera which I can change the lens out, I would of course prefer an all in one camera so I don't have to mess with changing lens and possibly missing a great shot while she's performing.
The standard lens that we got with our D3100 was the Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens. If you have the same package, a good lens for sporting events that would compliment what you already have is the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Zoom Lens. For a human subject much beyond a shot from 50 or 60 meters away you might think about a Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens. Remember your Circular Polarizing filter for those indoor zoom shots. A lens hood might also be a good addition to your camera bag. Through all these lenses you can shoot HD videos on the D3100. All-in-one package for stills and video.

Is that said made in Japan?

Nikon is a Japanese company. That being said, some of the Nikon products are made in Japan some are from Thailand. I hope this answers your question.
