This is a product that does not last long under normal (at least my wife's) use, regardless of the brand you use. Initially this performs just as well as the Apple product that costs significantly more. At this point I really do not know if it will last longer, but really doubt that it will only last 1/4 as long as the equivalent Apple product that lasted only a year.
One disappointment was difficulty they had finding it in the store. I knew from the internet there were plenty in stock, but it took 20 minutes for them to find one. For some reason they were in with appliances rather than computers, or phones. I am glad that I persisted and found someone willing to look for what I thought was there. Considering the small sale, that was going over and beyond what would have normally been expected even if it should have not been necessary.

This model offers a good value in terms of processor, HD size and RAM. However during initial setup it does not recommend making Factory Restore DVDs. I would have had problems if I had not done that because of past experience as I inadvertently corrupted it. when replacing factory anti virus with mine. I also found the factory keyboard to slow to react to keystrokes and had to replace it. The factory mouse was also jerky on most surfaces. That also was replaced. One other thing to be careful about on this computer that it only has HDMI out for video. If you do not have a monitor that will accept HDMI, you will need a monitor even though you may have one that works otherwise without that type of connection. That could make a difference in total cost for some as there are alternates not that much more expensive that have multiple connections for video.

We recently got hit with a power surge that wiped out some stuff not protected. At first I thought a relatively new stereo receiver was also wiped out. After unplugging it and starting it up again, it worked, but I felt I should get some protection for it.
Small size of this unit was an attraction based on where it has to go. It would be hard to write a bad review unless there was another surge and it did not protect the equipment. I am hoping that does not happen.

While it ;is usually said that the system is no better than its lowest quality part, you will get a bigger difference in sound based on speakers selected than anything else in the system. Yes you need a decent amp and sound source, but the speakers make a big difference in how things sound. While I do have some brand preference I will not pass that on not knowing if anything they make would be within your budget.
I will however suggest what to do to select a speaker,. Take a CD with you of music you like and are familiar with. Listen to it on high end equipment and speakers. Try a few different ones to get the sound you think is appropriate. Then audition equipment and speakers within your price range. Get as close to the high end as you can within your budget. Musical sound is very subjective and the ideal varies considerably depending on what type of music you listen to,.
Bottom line is I would suggest spending more than you want to on the speakers. They last way longer than anything else in the sound system. If you are concerned about quality of sound as opposed to just noise, it is an investment worthwhile making.

Why don't you "always" have compatibility listed with other product information (like specifications). I recently cancelled an order for a WD My Book 4tb right after making the order, because I realized I needed to check compatibility with windows Vista.
There are some basic compatibility issues that I do not think need to be stated. 32 bit operating systems and specifically Vista will only access a maximum of a 2 Tb drive. It is not just this drive specific. There would be a compatibility issue with any 4 Tb drive. If you need 4 Tb of total storage your best solution (other than replacing the computer so you would have an operating system that will continue to be supported) would be two 2 Tb external drives. While that would cause the need for files to be split up, it would not cost much more. It would cost less than replacing the computer.

Will this play .avi files?
AVI files should be converted to a DVD using a video authoring application to play on most DVD players. A search for video authoring software at either the Best Buy web site or with a general internet search will provide a number of choices for that type of software.
