Land line phone

Will this work for a land line phone? Media com says we need a router to switch to their phone service for 7.50 a month rental! I have this router. Can the technician use this router? No internet service. Help! Thank you!

If they are switching to a voice over IP service (VoIP) the modem the are going to give you will have an Ethernet port and you should be able to use that to get your internet wireless with this router

what is the range of the signal?

Depends on where the router is in your house i.e. Center of the house up stairs, basement, closet, all these can change the range drastically. I prefer to have up higher and center of the house usually with normal drywall and no major obstructions easily cover a normal 3 bed house (12 to 15,00 square feet)

Is this a smart router? The kind where I can change settings/password from app on my cell?

Yes you can download an app out you can use web based login to make changes to your router. You will have to set up a account with the manufactures website but it is just a few clicks. Then you log onto the app on your phone and you can see who's on, make changes, parental controls, and etc.

Across the street there is free public internet. I can access it for most browsing, but I would like a stronger signal, will this do that?

Between my data plan and public wifi, this could potentially save me some money...thanks so much.

Well it depends how strong the signal is. Do you have a login you have to use after connecting to the wireless? If not you can bridge the connection but it's difficult to explain here, but you can easily find a YouTube video on how to bridge from wireless to wireless. It works easier if it's open.

does this works with the xfinity wifi and or cable services

Yes. You will have to turn xfinity WiFi into a gateway and bridge the connections between the new router. This will allow the new router to serve as the main router. If you can connect the cable directly from the modem to router it's even easier. I would make a suggestion if you do direct disable the Wi-Fi on the other devices so it doesn't interfere with your new router.

Do you have to purchase Internet service from a provider or does netgear provide the service

You will have to purchase a service provider Netgear will not provide it for you. If they started that option this router would be the cost of an arm or leg. Once you get a service provider this router is easy to set up and works good.

Does this work for a Macbook air?

Absolutely. You connect to it as you would any WiFi. Search for the default network name it comes with out of the box if you haven't set up the router already, put the default user name and password. From there the set up process is easy. If you already set up your router just search for the SSID and log in.

Can I put an iPhone on the 5.0 Gh band? I need to need to run one of my iPhone's on a separate band.

Most of your newer smart phones will see the 5Ghz band. When you go to look for the SSID and all you see is the 2.4 then the phone isn't compatible for 5Ghz most of your gaming systems can only see the 2.4 but most phones, tablets, and smart devices can see the 5Ghz

Do you have to use a outside internet service or is it included ?

You will have to use outside internet or an ISP to get internet, but if you are looking to use it to create a network you can do that with out internet.

I have AT&T dsl. Best buy apparently only sells modem routers with no wifi for $60 or with wifi for $200 with nothing in between price wise. Im wondering if I can buy the netgear dsl modem and then buy this wifi router. can the two be used togerher?

Yes ask you have to do is bridge the modem and connect it to the router. Set the router up to obtain IP address automatically and make sure your DNS servers are for the modem.
