does the system come with an optical cable and do you need one if you are also using an hdmi cable

Hi ptd! The HW-A550 includes an optical cable in the box for simple connectivity to your TV. You do not need to utilize an optical connection if you are already using an HDMI connection to the TV. ^Tim

My HW-Q65T only has two sound modes , games and adaptive. Is this normal ? Can it be reset ?

Hi Hack! The HW-Q65T should have 5 sound modes available: Standard, Surround, Game Pro, Adaptive Sound, and DTS Virtual:X. Please try to re-initialize your soundbar again by pressing the - + (volume) buttons at the same time for at least 5 seconds. “INIT” appears on the display when the soundbar is initialized. Please also make sure that you have the latest firmware update. You can update your firmware by using a USB device. For further assistance, please contact Samsung Customer Support at 1-800-SAMSUNG / Available 8AM – 12AM EST 7 days a week. ^Tim

I'm curious... if you choose not to use the sub and rears for a while and just hear the soundbar sometimes, will it work by itself if you don't connect the sub and rears, or does it require connections to those other speakers in order to work at all?

Hi Newbie! You can certainly use the soundbar without the subwoofer connected, however the subwoofer provides the immersive bass to pair with the exceptional clarity and surround performance of the other speakers. ^Tim
