Will this TV show a 4:3 resolution Std Def signal through HDMI cable?
We watch a fair amount of older 4:3 shows on cable, and do not want those pictures distorted by stretching them. I am returning an Insignia 28 because it forces 4:3 std def pictures to be stretched if passed through HDMI cable. Hopefully this Samsung is capable of that, as was our older Panasonic. Thanks for your help!
AtlEngineer,
It should. HDMI is a digital pixel-by-pixel resolution, so in a sense, you returned your other TV (with due respect) for the wrong reason. The setting on your cable box should have dictated the picture's aspect ratio. Your TV, if set to 16x9, would receive the 4:3 signal untouched.
If some pictures were correct and others were not, there's one of two things happening here: The 4:3 picture was broadcast that way, or the settings on your TV or cable box were incorrect.
If it was broadcast that way, you can force it to 4x3, but that will probably distort the picture worse, since the picture was widened.
Try changing your cable box's aspect ratio (and your TV's aspect ratio) to 16x9. When a 4:3 picture is broadcast in 4:3, it will appear that way on you screen.
