How high above the top of the unit is the TV? (bottom bezel of tv to top of shelf what is clearance?) i.e. how much room would i have to mount a center channel speaker on top of the unit and still have it clear tv?

Erik, it will depend on the actual height of the TV; there is usually between 5 to 11 inches between the Top Shelf and the bottom of the TV.
