what causes this fridge to make ice sometimes and other times it doesn't

Thank you for sharing your insights with us. We regret that you have had a negative experience with your Whirlpool® Refrigerator ice maker. Please review the following professional troubleshooting tips for this concern:

Ice Maker Status and Reset: Confirm the ice maker is turned on. If it is on but not connected to a water line, it can cause buzzing and over-cooling in the refrigerator/freezer sections. Minor issues may be resolved by locating and pressing the reset button or by performing a power cycle (unplug for one minute). For specific instructions, refer to How to Turn the Ice Maker On (https://producthelp.whirlpool.com/Refrigeration/Full-Size_Refrigerators/Side_By_Side_Refrigerator/Ice_and_Water_Concerns/Ice_and_Dispenser_Concerns/Ice_Production/Not_Making_Ice/Not_Making_Ice_-_Side_by_Side_Refrigerator#s13394). Also, see https://youtu.be/m5oTM6thFig .

Ice Ejection Failure: If the ice maker is producing ice but not ejecting it into the bin, reset the unit by unplugging the refrigerator for one minute. Check for ice production a few hours after the reset.
Door Installation and Connections: For newly installed units, verify that doors are properly installed (consult the Installation Instructions/Owner's Manual). Confirm doors do not rub against adjacent surfaces. Check the water dispenser tube and wiring connections at the bottom of the freezer door hinge per the Installation Instructions.

Temperature Controls: Factory settings are preset to the "mid setting" for normal use. Since a warm refrigerator can impact ice production, consider adjusting the controls to a colder setting. Allow at least 24 hours between temperature adjustments for stabilization.

Water Pressure: Optimal water pressure is critical for efficient ice production and dispensing. Low pressure can result in slow dispensing, small/hollow ice cubes, or low/no ice production. Review Ensuring Correct Water Pressure (https://producthelp.whirlpool.com/Refrigeration/Full-Size_Refrigerators/Product_Info/Tips_and_Tricks/Ensuring_Correct_Water_Pressure) for details. Note that reverse osmosis (RO) systems can reduce water pressure further; review Ensuring Correct Water Pressure (https://producthelp.whirlpool.com/) for RO system information.

Water Line Installation: The refrigerator requires a cold water supply using 1/4" (6.35 mm) O.D. soft copper or PEX tubing, including a service loop. Ensure the water supply line is free of kinks; straighten the line to restore flow and pressure. Avoid pushing the refrigerator too far back against the wall to prevent pinching the line. See https://youtu.be/22Ee78VfBdE.

Water Filter: A clogged or improperly installed filter can restrict water flow, leading to low ice production. The filter should be replaced every 6 months or as needed. Whirlpool recommends everydrop® water filters (https://www.everydropwater.com/). See https://youtu.be/LIP-Za8XnzU.

Filter Flushing: The system must be flushed after every filter change or initial installation to remove excess air and carbon. Air in the system can cause dripping, small/hollow ice cubes, or cloudy water. The required flush volume varies by filter; refer to the filter's instructions. See https://youtu.be/D2W8jNl5PYs.

Please review the troubleshooting tips provided. If the issue persists, we recommend contacting Whirlpool® directly at 800-253-1301 for further assistance. Our representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM EST.

This extra large capacity front load washer has a trio of freshness features with the FreshFlow Vent System. It's is the first fan-powered system with antimicrobial protection designed to help keep your clothes and washer fresh. The FanFresh Option keeps clothes fresh in the washer. The Dry Drum Cycle reduces excess moistures in the drum and door. And the Antimicrobial rubber seal helps prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

What type of detergent is recommended for this washer?

Hello! Use only High Efficiency detergents. The package will be marked “HE” or “High Efficiency.” Low-water washing creates excessive sudsing with a non-HE detergent. Using non-HE detergent will likely result in longer cycle times and reduced rinsing performance. It may also result in component failure and, over time, buildup of mold or mildew. HE detergents should be low-sudsing and quick-dispersing to produce the right amount of suds for the best performance. They should hold soil in suspension so it is not redeposited onto clean clothes. Not all detergents labeled as High Efficiency are identical in formulation and their ability to reduce suds. For example, natural, organic, or homemade HE detergents may generate a high level of suds. If you use one of these and see a message about excessive sudsing error code appear in the display, consider using a different HE detergent. Always follow the detergent manufacturer’s instructions to determine the amount of detergent to use. Do not go over the Max line on the dispenser.

It says the cut out height is 31.5 inches. Does that mean this will fit if the height is 33 inches?

Hello! For model WDT730HAMZ the cutout dimension's would be 34". Measured from the lowest point on the underside of the countertop. May be reduced to 33 1/2" (851 mm) by removing the wheels and perforated area of insulation (blanket) on dishwasher.
