The Lenovo C340-15 Chromebook ships with Chrome Operating System not Windows. All Chromebooks have virus protection provided by the Google sever. No additional virus protection is needed.

My kids turned their lenovo back in to the school, would this be useful for middle school and high school classes ?

The Lenovo S340-14 Chromebook uses the Chrome Operating System and is compatible with Google Play Store APPs. It appears that the Intel Core i5-8400 processor is maximized with the 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2666MHz RAM it ships with. At the very least, the speed differential will be minimal.
