How would this laptop perform in college lectures in terms of battery life?

The system could provide a few hours or more of battery life with the biggest battery saver coming from switching to using only the processor's integrated graphics card. You can do this in the Legion Space app on the laptop under the GPU working mode "widget" on the homepage.

My laptop is being flooded with pop ups that state "get an app to open this 'ms-cortana-2' link". I don't have this app on my laptop. It is very frustrating and I am considering returning it. I tried everything I could find. Help please.

We're sorry to hear that you're having trouble with this. There are a couple approaches to this with the first being what's most recommended by fellow users. To follow this approach, press Win+R and type 'regedit'. Right-click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and create a new key named 'ms-cortana2'
Press Enter and restart your Pc. All your Lenovo shortcut keys should work fine, and there will be no pop-up of ms-cortana2.

Can this handle heavy accounting use with multiple large spreadsheets?

If this workload is the only type you'll put on the system, not including background apps and tasks, the laptop should be able to keep up. Although, if you wish your system to keep up with the heavy accounting demands now and in the future, we recommend considering a device with 24GB of memory or higher, as this will increase the threshold of what your system can handle a one time, which can provide a more fluid experience.
