The motherboard within this system is a MB H110 WIN DPK. You could replace the existing HDD with a compatible SSD, but there is no open slot on the motherboard for a GPU.

All the reviews of this laptop that I read (E.g.: CNET, PCWorld) indicate that RAM can be upgraded to 16 GB. However, I see answers here that suggest you cannot go beyond 8 GB. Is it because this particular model is locked down to 8 GB?

The maximum RAM for model number 80UE00D1US, is 8GB.

You can lay it down. As for putting a monitor on top of the system, that will depend on the weight of the monitor. It would be best not to put the monitor directly on the system case. Use a stand of some type. Also don't cover up any of the cooling vents on the system case.
