can this unit with only 2 USB ports handle a splitter and should it be a USB 2 or 3 splitter??

This system has one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 port. You can attach a USB port replicator to either the USB 3 or 2 port.

No, you can only connect one external monitor to the system's HDMI-Out port, but you can use the system display as the second monitor.
