California has some pretty strict rules for the labelling of electronic products. The solder used to build the electronic components in this system is considered a cancer-causing element. That same solder is in every electronic appliance in your home today - TV, microwave, refrigerator etc. You need to choose for yourself if this raises to the level of concern for you.

I really just want to use this for writing on-the-go. Can anyone speak specifically to its usefulness as a word processor?

That will depend on your comfort level with the keyboard. Being a 11.6" form factor, the keyboard is necessarily small. There is no 10-key numeric pad on this device. We recommend you try to get to your local store and try out the keyboard on this system. This system's ability to handle word processing is adequate. If you are a fast typist, you may experience a lag. Once again we recommend trying out this system in the store. You can pull up NotePad or WordPad and do some typing to experience the system.

Is this truly a laptop that just uses eMMC memory instead of a HDD? Can you use a USB flash drive as the hard drive and save programs to that so they run from the flash drive?

Yes, this system does have a eMMC solid state hard drive for storage, You can use a micro-SD card for additional storage, up to another 512GB. As far as installing programs on the SD Card, most programs have Copyright protection that won't allow you to store them on a removable drive.

My laptop is like crazy, the mouse pad doesn't work when I click on it, and would not let me select things. The laptop salect all the things on the screen over and over again
