Would this be a good laptop for college?

This is an entry level system. It is meant for light use. It is good for Microsoft Office type projects, light online browsing/research, social media. If this is the type of usage and work that the student will be doing, then yes, this would be a good choice for a college student. Also, check with the school that the student will be attending, they should provide some guideline as to the type and configuration of computer that will be necessary.

On this model the depth is listed at 11.1", whereas the depth on the "older" version (80U0000FUS) is listed at 9.6". But when comparing the pictures of the new and older version they look exactly the same size. How come? 1.5" should be noticeable?

This is due to the addition of the fingerprint reader on the newer model. We don't believe that it is noticeable.
