Transferring Files from PC to MAC

I just purchased a new iMac and want to transfer all my pictures and videos from my Vista PC to iMac. What format does it need to be in order for both computers to access the files? FAT32? Once I transfer everything to the iMac I'll no longer need my PC to read it because I'm getting rid of it.
