Sadly yet another doorstop from Sony. If the features worked as promised this would've been a winner and yet it's the opposite. Chromecast comes in and out, USB-A files not recognized, USB-B on PC unusable but works on Mac. (no software for mac as usual).
No native support for NAS drive so requires the use of Plex via the Chromcast app. Never know if the unit is in a standby mode since the light stays green all the time despite the fact the manual reads it will go to sleep after no use is detected. Don't expect much of audio quality if your MP3's are low quality. This thing thrives on Non or less Compressed files.

I tried to believe the progress in technology would make this antenna work. It does not. I will have to keep using the tried and true YAGGI design that works 99% instead of 10%. Sadly, even if it was free it would not be worth it.

3 years on since introduction and this camera still deliver. I got it for video reasons above else. Feature galore with few caveats. One, no USB charging. Two, no RAW video codec supported. The saving grace is the battery that outlasts the competition. Being mirrorless you can put a $10 CCTV lens or a $100k zoom. WiFi controller is also impressive allowing for steady shots whilst on a stand. Rotating touch screen one of the best, period. If you rig this camera with rails, follow focus, matte box etc you are bound for some awesome stuff that outperforms anything TV stations put forth. Not kidding or exaggerating. If you do not believe then stick to your smartphone. This camera is limited by your imagination only not accounting for that little raw caveat. The 2x crop should work in your favor while trying to get close to the subject.
As long as you treat this camera as a PRO rig used in films and shoot in the controlled light you'll never use an ISO higher than an 800. For best results always use a stand even if it's just a monopod.

As always with Sony they rarely surprise with a good product. Sound of this unit is half as good as Sonos Play 1 whilst occupying as much as three to four times the volume. The only time it kinda shines is during Dolby encoded movies or while streaming high-res audio files. The app was great at the begining before it changed to a pasty white sheet of paper controller. Lack of imagination matches that of Google eco system. Saving grace is the three HDMI inputs which works great with older HDTV's. If this was not a clearance I'd have a hard time getting this unit. If you can live with the fact that it does sound better than most TV speakers then this could be it.

When you compare the Alienware with the Taiwanese big four Asus, MSI, Gigabyte and ASRock then you get to see no value in Aurora R5. Alienware UEFI is straight out of the 1980's MS DOS computer look vs the big four bespoke designed GUI with every possible tweak you can think of.
MSI Nightblade MI2 metal case at half the size and at $999 kicks Aurora's butt with 7th gen Intel and 10th gen Nvidia on board for $500 less. Strangely BB opted not to carry this line. I returned the unit without even opening the box since many reviews pointed to the PSU incredible noise while running basic tasks. Biggest reason for the return was the Nvidia's almost double the performance from 9-10th gen cards and the fact that Aurora is using pretty outdated case design internals. Even with a clearance discounts this was not worth it since I had to invest in more ram and SSD drive. I guess you have to be a diehard fan of Alienware brand to take whatever they offer. Not in my case.

This can easily be the future format for SSD. Although this particular one is slowed by the USB 3.0(5Gbps) and not enabling it's full potential of USB 3.1 at 10Gbps it's still an awesome unit. If future cameras embrace the USB 3.1 this will be the main/backup drive depending on the size of the camera.For now I'm using it for booting my OS quicker than internal HD without a hassle of opening the PC.

I used this NAS as a "GO TO" device for my clients.
Now after experiencing the issues with resetting the password via S-Drive
it might no longer be a choice. Seagate phone support or email support is pretty useless. Two weeks on and I still cannot log in due to :"GENERIC ERROR" msg.
LAN access speed is using a 10/100 protocol and albeit faster than wireless should use gigabit speed.
Local access is pretty easy and most of your streaming devices will find it without programming.

You can also sandbox your files and share them with your colleagues.

I just cut the cord!!! I hooked up Amazon Fire streaming to my TV with HDTV Antenna. I have many local channels, Netflix, hula, etc. Can I hook this up to my TV to use as a DVR only to record shows since I don't need to use it as a streaming devise?
YES you can but there is a monthly fee. I have ROKU, Chromecast, Fire TV but TIVO is the only one I use all the time.

Can I connect to my old dvr & download programs to a dvr
I have a.magnavox HDR /with hdd & dvd. Can I connect them.
NO.
But there is a better solution. If you know how, transfer your DVR files to a PC or NAS and name the File ie MY OLD DVR.
Share that folder on the network and TIVO will find it and let you watch it.
BTW , Tivo will let you copy your shows to an external drive or your tablet so you can watch them on vacation.
