This printer comes with Brother "Control Center 4" scanning software, which offers a lot of options in terms of the file type you want to create, the scan resolution, whether you want to scan in black and white, gray scale, or color, and where you want the file to be sent. The scanning software has adjustments for brightness and contrast as well. It has four pre-set "uses" by default and you can customize those. So, if you want to create a PDF or a graphic image (like a photo), you make that choice up front. Whether you connect it to your computer with a wireless, network, or USB connection doesn't affect the way the software works: the scanned file always is sent to your computer.
All of that being said... and just to be clear... the software does NOT include photo editing features to adjust photos AFTER they have been scanned. Windows includes some rudimentary features to do that, and you can find free programs for photo adjustments.
Hope that helps!
