Great addition to my rental property
on December 21, 2022
Posted by: TechMatcher
I've recently replaced my outdoor light with the Wyze Wired Outdoor WiFi Floodlight at one of my rental properties. I needed to upgrade the outside light anyways, so I thought why not at in a camera at the same time to monitor who comes and goes from the property!
Installation was fairly easy and straight forward. I was worried the plastic components/housing wouldn't be study enough, but it is still having there after a few months and working as expected. The little hook included actually helps with install if you're doing it yourself. I ignored it at first - but ended up using it - so save yourself the learning step.
The camera appears to be just the Wyze v3 camera - which does give a nice image in both daylight and darkness. I'm happy with the image aside from the fact that I'd like to have a wider angle view. As seen in the photos, it's a fairly focused view and I'd like to be able to see more in the viewfinder.
In order to keep the images or videos, you must sign up for a subscription. It's relatively cheap and easy to do - so really not that big of deal but some people may not like the fact that you have to sign up for something.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the upgrade to the Wyze Floodlight Camera. I can now more eaily check to see if my tenants shoveled the front steps and sidewalk, and can look back and see who is coming in and out of the building and when.

We spend 90% of our time indoors where the air is often 2 to 5 times worse than the air outside. Continuous monitoring of indoor air quality is key for minimizing negative health effects, preventing illness and increasing productivity, energy and good health. Airthings, air quality specialists and experts in radon, created the Airthings Wave Plus as the first smart air quality monitor with radon detection. Wave Plus has since won multiple awards for consumer electronics and innovation and was among the 2019 TIME Magazine inventions of the year. It is the perfect solution for homeowners to gain full visibility into six indoor air factors; radon, carbon dioxide (CO2), airborne chemicals (TVOCs), humidity, temperature and air pressure. Airthings Wave Plus includes a free app to connect to your smartphone (iOS/Android) via Bluetooth and an online dashboard with advanced analytics. Battery operated allowing you to install anywhere, with 16 months battery life. Please allow for a 7-Day settling period for the sensors to adjust to their new environment. By monitoring daily and continuously, you can avoid radon side effects, get the best indoor humidity level, low voc levels and low carbon dioxide levels. Made to the best indoor air quality standards, Airthings Wave Plus is essential in every home.

Interesting (and scary) results
on November 6, 2022
Posted by: TechMatcher
I've recently acquired an AirThings Wave Plus monitor for my home. This sophisticated device monitors indoor air quality with 6 sensors: Carbon Dioxide, humidity, temperature, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and pressure. I like to think I have good quality air in my home (built in 2008), but according to the device, it is quite poor!
My house is a standard Minnesota 2 story home built in 2008. I have a radon mitigation system with a continuously running fan drawing air from under the home slab and expelling it out the roof. I also have an Air Exchanger running on the return side of my gas furnace. Currently set to exchange 60% of of inside air (transferring heat from the exiting inside air to the incoming fresh air) and then it passes through the furnace for additional heating/cooling and distributes it throughout my house.
So, I was quite surprised to see my elevated radon reading as well as high CO2 levels. Granted that I'm only 7 days into using the device and it needs time - even over a month to calibrate - I'm still a bit concerned to see these readings.
Temperature, pressure and humidity reading seem about right - so I can't say that the device in malfunctioning. To that end, I have access to a digital radon meter that I plan to use to compare readings.
Currently, I have the device placed horizontal in my office since that is where I spend most of the day. in a few weeks, I'll move it to a bedroom and compare results there too. After that is the basement.
Overall - this was an easy setup, app download and place the device - so anyone can do it. If you're concerned about your air quality in your home - this is a convenient way to capture some data and take action if needed. See attached pictures of the app and my somewhat scary readings.
Giving 5 stars for now for the ease of use and access to data.
I'll edit this review if I find the radon numbers to be inaccurate.

Fast and Stable
on October 24, 2022

I've always been a fan of NETGEAR products. This new Nighthawk AX5300 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 router is no exception. Note that this is not a MESH router - this is a single, stand-alone yet capable router that covers 2500 sq ft. If you have a small multi-level home, placing this on the center floor in the middle of the layout is your best bet. If you have a sprawling setup with lots of metal/concrete interference, you might want to consider a 2 or 3 node mesh router - like an Orbi.
Overall - I am very please with the performance of this router. In addition, the 5 gigabit ethernet ports (1 WAN, 4 LAN) make it convenient to hardwire multiple devices if you need the truest and fastest speeds - like for gaming. This device has a triple-core process and 512MB or RAM to easily handle up to 25 devices.
This router uses the AX wireless standard - to handle the newest and fastest generation of WiFi devices. Note that your existing desktops/laptops/devices may not yet use the AX standard - but since the router is backwards compatible, you won't have any trouble connecting.
Again - this is a very capable device that is easy to setup and use! If you haven't upgraded your Wi-Fi for a couple years - this will make a significant difference in your experience. Always be sure to update the firmware as well - to be as safe and secure as you can!

Good for starting your home monitoring
on September 30, 2022
Posted by: TechMatcher
If you are looking for an affordable home/business monitoring solution - this Wyze v2 bundle might be just the thing for you! Including a Base Station (requiring wired internet) and 3 battery operated cameras, but can move them and place them in the best spots with ease.
Setup was breeze once you have a Wyze account, and these little cameras pack a ton of features. You should make a list of your needs and compare - as there are newer models with more features as well.
After charging the cameras fully, I deployed them to various locations - including switching WiFi networks - just to see if that was difficult. It wasn't - especially since the base station required wired internet - when switching networks you just need to change that and power off/on each camera.
I do like the color night vision - seems to work really well even when it is really dark. If you have an outside light that stays on - the color will work all the time (see picture). You can disable the IR lights if you prefer the color mode - otherwise in low light condition it will start with color then switch to black/white.
To record and save events to the cloud, you'll need to sign up for a subscription (common with many camera systems today). Each camera gets paid for individually - unless you want to just pay $99 for all your cameras.
Overall - I'm liking the portability of the bundle and ease of setup. This is a great place to start if you don't already have an investment in a particular system.

The Wyze Cam v3 is the 3rd generation of Wyze~s flagship camera, the Wyze Cam v2. Like its predecessor, the Wyze Cam v3 lets you see and record 1080p video right from the Wyze mobile app. New to the Wyze Cam v3 is its water-resistant design allowing for outdoor installation with an IP65 rating. The Wyze Cam v3 also takes advantage of an all-new Starlight Sensor which allows for extreme low-light performance and shows great detail in the dark. With the Wyze Cam v3's color night vision, night time video recording appears as if it~s day time.

Easy to setup, great features and quality
on September 30, 2022
Posted by: TechMatcher
I have several properties and thought setting up some cameras for security would be a good idea. These Wyze V3 fit the bill perfectly. For starters - they are relatively cheap so if they get stolen or damaged (likely in my area) it's not a major loss. For that reason alone I'll subscribe to the Cam Plus for unlimited length video recording (back to back available) and a bunch more features (Person/Package/Vehicle/Pet detection), etc.
The fact that these v3 cameras can do Color Night Vision and don't require a base station make them perfect for my use case. They do require power though - as does most everything these days - so really not a problem.
I've set these up in a few locations already - including switching WiFi networks in the process because I wanted to know how that works. It's fairly easy - you basically just re-setup the devices.
The daytime video quality is awesome - and night time is pretty good. You won't be pulling license plates from either mode unless they are close to the cameras - but again - these are $30 cameras. I'm happy with the picture quality they provide.
There are a tone of new features with the v3 as compared to the previous v2 model. Items like IP65 weather resistance, dual IR light system, color night vision as mentioned and more.
Overall - the price is right for you to setup your home security solution today!

Easy to use, perfect for fitness
on August 31, 2022

I'd like to share my thoughts on the JVC True Wireless Fitness Series. I've been looking for earbuds with ear hooks for a while so I was excited to try the JVC's out! I seem to have trouble with earbuds falling out of me ears, as I've lost more than one of earbuds from my other sets over the last 12 months. I'm very active outdoors - whether walking, hiking, yard work, etc - so I work hard and sweat hard all the time.
First off - there are S, M & L earpieces for you to try. I've learn you really do need to spend a few minutes and try them all - on any earbud set you buy - so you can be sure to find the best fit for your ears. Once you do that, you can hook the ear hooks around your ears, pair easily to your mobile device and start listening.
Pairing was super easy, but remembering the controls was a little more difficult. Most earbuds use a series of touches to control volume, pause/play songs, skip and reverse songs. These JCVs are the same - so just read through the directions so you know which one to touch.
Battery life is good as well - 7+ hours in the earbuds, and 22+ hours in the case. If you run the earbuds dead - it will take 2 hours to full charge them again - so plan ahead.
Overall, this is an economical set of devices that stay on your ears well (I still have both of mine) and produce quality sounds.

Mesmerizing and Relaxing
on August 31, 2022
Posted by: TechMatcher
It was kind of an impulse purchase - but something I've always wanted. The HoMedics drift Meditation Sand Table is quite the conversation piece. The 21" version is large. Large enough to be it's own end table. It would have been nice to come with an adjustable stand - so that's something I'm still keeping my eye out for.
Unboxing the table, it was easy to assemble, but a little tricky to evenly distribute the sand. However, with a bit of use, I think it has distributed the sand will on its own.
My whole family was home for the maiden run - and it was funny to see everyone crowding around the table - watching the steel ball draw images in the sand. The LED lights enhanced the experience - and the whole family was mesmerized. Even the teenage friends that were over stood around and watched - or checked in every few minutes to see the progress on the new pattern.
The app makes it easy to change the lights, set color changing effects or play a new pattern. There are many patterns to choose from, and I'm hoping they continue to release more.
I rated only 4 stars due to a few reasons:
1. I would have liked a little adjustable height stand to come with it making it even more usable as a piece of furniture.
2. I've looked around a bit with no success, but I was wondering if I could import pictures into the app and have it render it into a drawable item. Doesn't seem like that functionality exists yet. Hoping for something like it in the future.
3. Comparing to images from other sand tables, is seems like there are fewer images available on the drift - again hoping that changes and they continue to release new patterns and pictures.
Overall - the HoMedics drift Meditation Sand Table is fun to use, definitely a conversation starter and help take away your stress while you watching the image unfold.

Powerful and light

I'm a floor fanatic. I'm constantly cleaning the floor, likely because I have 2 dogs and a cat. This Shark Stratos vacuum makes quick work of the pet hair, long girl hair and has a nice fresh scent!
I own other Shark vacuums, the the Stratos ups the game with Odor Neutralizing technology. Basically it's a scent cup that you install and modify the scent intensity. Interesting feature but it's just another thing to purchase. If you use a powder or carpet scent already - this is the vacuum for you!
Like the other Sharks - I'm impressed with the power and handling of the Stratos. The lift-away container/motor turn it into a stick-vac, so you can easily vacuum under beds, couches, chairs and tables. The head width is perfect for steps too - never a fun job but made easy with this vacuum.
Shark provided a nice long cord - you might be able to do your entire floor from a single outlet - depending on the size of your house of course.
I also like the position of the power button and ability to change the floor type setting right from the handle.
It's easy to clean the dust bin, filters are easily accessible as well and the powerfins basically clean themselves!
Overall - I highly recommend the Shark Stratos and other Shark products as well - I haven't been disappointed yet!

Great fit - super sound!
on August 15, 2022
Posted by: TechMatcher
I've had these new JLab JBuds now for a little over a week, and I must say that I'm impressed with the fit in my ear, the quality of the sound and ease of use for the charging case.
I've struggled in the past to find the right earbud fit for my ears, they are always too loose and fall out easily. The JBuds come with 3 different sizes of ear cushions, using the smallest one seemed to be a good fit for me. It is important that you actually take the time to try all three sizes as well as the "cush fins". Getting the right fit is important to sound quality and over all comfort.
The case is small, has a built in integrated USB-A charging cable with is about 2" long. That could present a problem for some - but I have lots of USB charging ports available so that wasn't an issue for me.
Features include: sweat proof with IP55 (except the case), multi-point (connect to two devices - like your phone and laptop), custom EQ settings and a 9 hour play time and 27 hours stored in charging case.
I gave only 4 stars for a couple reasons: 1. there's no power button to turn the earbuds off if you don't have the case with you. You need to turn off Bluetooth on your phone, then the earbuds will power off after 3 minutes. 2. The button functions are a bit difficult to remember - see photo for example.
Lastly, I made several phone calls using these earbuds and I was surprised at the voice quality on both ends. No noise suppression means you'll have to stay in quiet areas, but the quality is impressively good if you are!
Overall, for the price these are a great choice for your daily drive (use Be Aware mode), working out or just chillin' at home!

Solid construction but short on memory
on July 31, 2022
Posted by: TechMatcher
I recently received the Dell G15 gaming laptop powered by the AMD Ryzen 5 6600H CPU, 8 GB DDR5 4800 GHz RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU and a 512GB Hynix NVMe drive stick.
Initial performance test scores using Passmark Performance Test 10.2 (so you can compare to your current rig) are posted in the pictures. For a laptop, the scores were pretty good in my opinion - however you can achieve much faster scores on a desktop with bigger power supplies, etc.
After downloading and installing all Microsoft patches, then all the Dell recommended patches, I loaded my two test games - Forza Horizon 5 and Microsoft Flight Simulation standard. There's not alot for space for games with a 512GB NVMe disk - so you'll have to upgrade/add a drive to keep them loaded and handy. After added my two games plus Sniper Elite 5, I'm down to 32 GB free.
So - after the games loaded and the laptop was fully charged, I grabbed my XBox controller and heading out on the porch to play a little. The quick story is that in playing Forza Horizon 5, I ran out of system memory quickly (see picture), and the graphics because sluggish and lagging - sometimes freezing momentarily. In less than an hour - I received a low battery warning.
Back into the house to plug in and take a quick flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator - I experienced lagging graphics during game play as well.
Thinking ahead - I order 32GB of DDR5 4800Ghz memory and in arrived within a day. I installed the memory today and testing the game play again. Forza Horizon 5 ran more smoothly, and non memory errors. Same with Microsoft Flight Simulator - much more smoothly.
I will mention that the sound on this system is AWESOME. It's loud and broad. Well done there!
Overall, I'd recommend this device/processor combination - but would highly recommend budgeting in for 32GB RAM and planning ahead for a hard drive upgrade or USB-C external drive.

Garmin Speak™ Plus with Amazon Alexa is what you love about Amazon Alexa, now in your vehicle. Use voice control for hands-free access to music, news, navigation and more. Plus, a built-in dash cam gives you forward collision and lane departure warnings.

Can the lane departure tones be turned off? It's really really annoying! Goes off every time you come up on a car at a stop light. It's not realistic to stay 5 car lengths away from the car in front of you at a light...lots birds would be flipped at You!

Aside from muting the device itself, you can turn off selective features: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/speakplus/EN-US/GUID-EFD3414D-5D4A-4BB7-9496-ECAD2C4D994E.html

I don't see anything about just turning off the tone for that specific feature.

Since there is no graphics card, I'm curious to the max resolution. My Dell monitor is capable of 2560x1440. Will I need an add on card to get this resolution?

No - you don't need to add a graphics card. I'm running 2560x1440 resolution on my ASUS 2K monitor right now from this machine.

Make your home an internet haven with this versatile Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system. Three identical tri-band dual-stream AC2200 routers, each equipped with a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, deliver lightning-fast internet. Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0/LE, this Linksys Velop wireless Wi-Fi system is simple to set up and pairs easily with computers, tablets and smart devices.

Will this system work in a metal building with walls, I have AT&T and currently use an M-Cell booster from them but it does not extend my service throughout the entire building.

Unfortunately, you never know for sure until you've tried it - as all structures and materials are a bit different. However, using a three node system like this starts you off with better odds that a single router! Give it a try and see how it works!

I currently have the latest AT&T Pace modem / router. Can the AT&T modem be placed into a bridge mode enabling just the modem function? From research, this is a very complicated procedure. I would prefer to return the rental AT&T unit.

I would agree with your second statement - and would always recommend that people purchase their own dedicated modem (cable or DSL) and then use a separate dedicated router configuration. You have more control that way - can keep your devices firmware updated regularily, and usually have better equipment!

The advertising states that Velop works with Alexa but I can find no information on how to set this up. Help?

Here's the link to enable the Linksys skills for Alexa. They're not in the Alexa app yet.
