Decent device protection, interesting interface
on July 19, 2021

Bullguard Internet Security is a new protection suite for your PC, Android device or system running a MacOS. Installation was simple and completed within a few minutes. This is the first time using the product and I like the control panel like interface which has separate areas which I will cover here:

- Antivirus Real-time protection, which scans files as they are loaded, and through the dropdown driven interface additional options for Quick, Full, Custom, Settings and to determine which files have been previously quarantined.
- Firewall – software-based firewall, with the ability to manage rules, see activity network activity in logs, with some insight into hosts which have been blocked. Looks pretty good however 95% of people will never have to do anything here.
- Vulnerabilities – shows vulnerabilities in the configuration of your device, it did find that I was behind on Microsoft Updates and provided me guidance.
- Backup – simple backup functionality, will back to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and USB devices/Network Drives. I configured a simple backup job and it seems to be fairly straightforward.
- PC Tune Up & Game Booster – will perform the normal maintenance functions, Windows and Browser cleanup. A duplicate file finder (which is handy) and a Game Booster which lowers the resources Bullguard utilizes during game play. This is supposed to configure itself, I have seen it take action on one game which it asked me to allow to access the internet and marked as optimized in the Game Booster section.
- Parental Controls – have not really looked at or reviewed this feature.
- Secure Browser – opens a private browser, similar to other browsers with a InPrivate or Incognito mode.
- Identity Protection – available as part of an upgrade to BullGuard Premium Protection.
- Home Scanner Network - available as part of an upgrade to BullGuard Premium Protection.
- BullGuard VPN - available as part of an upgrade to BullGuard Premium Protection.

Overall after using Bullguard Internet Security for over three weeks, I have not run into any issues. My PC seems to perform well, real time scanning seems to have minimal impact on system resources and even when performing a full scan, the use of CPU cycles seems to adapt when other process starts to contend for CPU cycles. I do like the interface with each of the areas covered using a dropdown interface. The firewall and antivirus seem to have many different configuration options all which lead to a lot of flexibility in use of the product. Overall, the product does what it is supposed to do, with minimal impact on the performance of your PC, even when using the most resource intensive applications or games – Bullguard Internet Security seems to get out of the way without leaving you unprotected.

Pros:

- Easy to install.
- Cool interface with each area having a dedicated box with dropdown boxes to dive deeper into that function.
- Signature updates happened seamlessly in the background, with indicators of activity on its taskbar icon.
- Built to not impact resource intensive applications or games.

Cons:

- None observed so far.

powerful compact conferencing speaker
on July 7, 2021
Posted by: Bappy

The AVerMedia - USB Conference Speaker Phone is a handy compact device, it hooks up to your system (and is powered) by your USB-A port (with a USB-C port on the device). It easily integrates with video conferencing apps such as Zoom, Skype, WebEx and Teams. I only tested it will Zoom and found the audio to be clear and the microphone easily picking up voices in a small conference. The device has LED lights that indicate volume (1 thru 5 LED), when pressing mute the LEDs turn red. Also there is a mute button (although I did not see the Mute mode in Zoom being able to be controlled through the device). As for the noise canceling it does a good job of handling background noise. I mimicked background noise in my kitchen by using the overhead range exhaust fan (which is very loud), on any of the three settings and getting progressively louder I was able to hear my wife and daughter clear without hearing any background noise, pretty impressive. The "AI" mode which is supposed to limit other type of background noise (AverMedia cites crying babies or barking dogs) seemed to not have much affect. Overall I find this device to be useful, compact and handy for those still working remote or travelling on business.
Pros:
- compact
- does a good job eliminating background noise
- no external power needed, sources power from your USB port
- on device mute, voiume +/- buttons and a Windows shortcut button
Cons:
- did not seem to integrate with Zoom controls (mute specifically).
- AI mode did not seem to do much, however the overall noise canceling was effective.

competent mouse for smaller hands

my wife loves the design of this mouse, with a pretty pink color. It is responsive like most Logitech input devices and is of good quality. This was a breeze to install on her computer, all I had to do was plug in the USB receiver into her computer, install a single battery and this mouse was ready to go. Had a good feel, was precise and did not induce any fatigue even with all day use.

huge bluetooth speaker for blasting tunes
on June 17, 2021
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
The Sony SRSXP500 Bluetooth Portable Wireless Speaker is technically portable, however it is a huge speaker by normal Bluetooth speaker standards, almost 2 feet high and weighing in at 25 pounds. It can either be stood up vertically or laid down horizontally. The unit come with LED lighting which can be turned on and off by a button on the rear of the unit. You also download a Sony Mobile app to update firmware, control volume, sound profiles or lighting modes or use it to launch your favorite music app. The are two USB A ports on the back of the unit that can be used for charging or connecting devices (one is dedicated to data connectivity) including a USB flash drive with music files. You can also pair this unit in “party mode” with other compatible Sony speakers, which is a pretty cool feature which I was able to do with one of my other Sony speakers. The speaker sounds rich and clear sounding, with a dedicated tweeter and midrange speakers with a woofer, bass response is substantial and can be pumped up by enabling “Mega Bass” mode, through a top panel button or when using the Sony Music center app. The speaker is easy to pair, has a combined play/pause/next track button and a separate +/- volume buttons on top. Around back a removable panel reveals the two USB A plugs, a line in jack, two full size jacks where a guitar and microphone can be plugged in to make this essentially a PA speaker.
When I first started to play music through the speaker it was set to “Rave” mode which flashes sets of LEDs on the front edges of the speaker, after using the speaker for a while I found myself playing with different lighting modes, finally settling in on one of the calmer modes.
What matters is sound, and this speaker delivers for all occasions, deep rich sound and it can get LOUD. This speaker is well suited for outdoor use as it is IPX4 water resistant.
Pros:
- Configurable, rich sound with great bass response (mega bass)
- Huge portable speaker with separate tweeter, midrange a woofer.
- Sony Music center app is the heart of controlling and configuring the speaker
- Very good battery life (rated for 20 hours), with a two USB type A jacks for charging other devices.
- Line In jack for connecting devices via a cord
- Two full size jacks for connecting a microphone and/or a guitar
- LED lighted borders
- One of the USB-A ports can connect to a USB flash drive to play stored music or connect to other devices.
Cons:
- Get ready for a workout, or hand truck to move this giant around.
- Not a fan of the combined play/pause/next track button.

jam packed ultra notebook for gaming
on June 14, 2021
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
Looking for a dedicated gaming laptop I came upon a ultra-compact notebook, the ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) line of gaming PCs, most which checked all the boxes on my list of my requirements. In particular the model with a 13.4" 120Hz 13.4” IPS-Type WUXGA (1920 x 1200) 16:10 touchscreen and NVIlDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU with 4GB of VRAM got my attention. This model seems to have the best of both worlds, a smaller class notebook jam packed with processing and graphics power, enough to run the latest games and drive external 4K screens. The unit comes with an AMD Ryzen 9 CPU which yields very good performance (which is a processor line which dominates in my household, I also have a full size general purpose notebook and what was a high performance desktop from a few years back all coming from the same AMD family of Ryzen processors). In addition, this ROG laptop from ASUS has a 1TB SSD storage drive and 16GB or RAM all which lead to a portable rig that excels for most gaming needs.
Given it is an ultra-compact notebook it has limited ports but is expandable via the optional ROG XG port expander which uses their proprietary ROG XG Mobile interface. The onboard ports include an HDMI port, a 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A and a USB-C port for accelerated charging (charges to 0-50% within 30 minutes via the 100 watt charger), and a headphone jack.
**For informational purposes while I have not yet found a need to purchase this add on, the following capabilities are part of that device if you decide the onboard ports are not sufficient: [ROG XG Mobile port expander via the ROG XG Mobile interface(PCIE Gen3x8) and USB Type-C combo port, the optional port expanders includes and Gigabit Lan 10/100/1000 Mbps wired network connection, HDMI 2.0b port, a DisplayPort support G-SYNC, four 4xUSB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, and a SD card reader]. Again this is an extra purchase item with its own power supply.
The keyboard is backlit and folds over into a 360 combination so the notebook can be used in tablet mode. The power on button also doubles as a fingerprint reader if you want to setup Windows Hello to ease logins.
The notebook itself is ruggedly built with a gorilla glass display, the laptop feels heavier (2.98 lbs. and measures 0.62" thick) than you would think for the size (although with all the tech packed into this unit and the enhanced cooling mechanism it makes sense). I think this until will hold up well under normal conditions, certainly more than a standard notebook.
This notebook performs very well, providing an excellent gaming experience with smooth gameplay and good frame rates.
Pros:
- Ultra-compact notebook, small form factor
- Performance oriented, nice CPU and GPU
- SSD drive which is a must for all PCs
- Gorilla glass touchscreen for durability
- screen folds over so you can use it in tablet mode.
Cons:
- Could use another video output port on the base laptop
- Gets fairly warm even when not pushing the unit to the max
- Fingerprint reader built into the power button seemed finicky.

mini air filtering unit, smart looking
on June 1, 2021

the PureZone Halo is a mini air purifier which will filter a small room or area (100 sq feet). It resembles an old school smoke detector just slightly larger. It has three different speeds and is fairly quiet on low and medium setting. The unit can lay flat or stand up almost like a book. It also has attractive blue lighting accents which can be turned on and off.
Overall this unit does a decent job for small areas.
Pros:
- looks good
- filters the air in a 100 sq ft area
- replaceable filter
- ambient blue lighting
Cons:
- not sure if the filter is proprietary, that would be con.

old school mini boom box - reimagined
on June 1, 2021
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
What do I like about Anker Soundcore Select Pro Bluetooth Speaker ? It’s like an old school small boombox from back in the day except with modern touches like Bluetooth 5.0, the ability to charge another device, LED light show, companion mobile app, wet proof with IPX-7 protection.
The speaker has a handle which is molded into the body of the two speakers which have a bass reflex rubberized material at both ends. You can setup a basic strobe/light show and can control it via the mobile app or on the device via a button. The basic buttons include from left to right; a bass button for enhanced lower end response, a Bluetooth button for pairing, power on/off, light button to cycle through light patterns or turn them off. In addition, a multipurpose button for volume up/down, track back/forward. On the back is a rubber grommet which covers a USB-A plug for charging other devices and USB-C for charging this unit.
As for the speaker, it sounds good with surprisingly decent audio quality, with extra bass if you need it. I was surprised on the amount of sound which comes from this fairly compact speaker, with little distortion even at high volume.

The battery lasted me near the claimed 16 hours, with mostly moderate volume use over the course of 10 days or so of playback sessions of about 2, 3, 2, 4, 2, 1 and 2 hour duration before needing a recharge.
Speaker build seems pretty robust with waterproof protection which allows it to essentially get immersed in water. Although this speaker is meant for outdoor situations, I can see sand being an issue in the traditional looking grill, although I guess you could wash it out if you wanted.
Note: I couldn't figure out why this speaker seemed to slide on surfaces until I looked on the bottom which had grippy rubber feet hidden under some protective film which is meant to be removed.
Pros:
- Form factor, handy compact size easily held with one hand
- Sounds good, with a extra bass feature
- Charging give/take plugs on the back of the unit
- Basic light show
Cons:
- Black color might get hot outdoors in the sun or at the beach.

nice 4k display, with HDR capabilities
on May 29, 2021
Posted by: Bappy
from Raleigh, NC
The ASUS - 28" IPS WLED 4k Gaming Monitor is a decent size, HDR capable monitor which is targeted towards gaming or high resolution video applications and general media consumption. Note you must have a video card or subsystem which supports both 4k video and HDR or a gaming console which have some of the same capabilities to fully utilize this display. Three inputs are provided, including one Displayport and two HDMI ports, the latter being suited for output from game consoles.
The display panel comes with a study but slimline stand, which also provides 90 degree physical rotation between portrait & landscape positions. The stand utilizes standard VESA mounting with a like side patten on the monitor, so if you have your own multistand rig you can easily mount this monitor to that setup.
As for the display, it sports an IPS 3840x2160 4k DCI-P3 panel with HDR10 capabilities (accurate playback of HDR video taken with my iPhone 12 Pro). Looking back at some of my recent video shot in 4k it was difficult to find any flaws with the playback and visual representation yielded by this monitor. The depth of settings available on the monitor itself are pretty extensive, although you do have to access them through a non-intuitive set of controls on the back of lower right side.
Having a AMD based system including a Radeon RX560 4k capable video card I was able to take advantage of most of the capabilities of this monitor, including AMD FreeSync (which claims to reduce choppy frame rates) and HDR mode which yielded impressive results.
A note about Windows HDR support: at first, I had issues configuring HDR in Windows as my other monitor is 4k but not HDR capable, so when extending my desktop I encountered issues with video blanking. This is not indicative of a deficiency in the monitor and learned to set HDR on only when I had my computer in single display mode.
As for the use cases for this monitor:
Gaming – crisp gameplay with little lag or frame rate issues including tearing. Not a big gamer, but the most recent iteration of Microsoft flight simulator looked awesome in 4k but ran against limitations related to the frame rates in my video subsystem.
Video – excels with pretty dramatic HDR 10 video playback, this display was really able to bring out the HDR effect and amazing detail. Love that this monitor easily pivots from warm HDR content playback to cool retina burning brightness. Really impressed by the color gamut delivered by DCI-P3.
Overall, this display really demonstrates the advancement of 4k monitors over the last few years, it greatly improves the capabilities of my first gen Samsung 4k 27 inch monitor.
Pros:
- Ergonomic and functional stand
- Quality panel, pivots from HDR to retina burning brightness
- Increased color gamut
- Highly tunable/configurable
- Flicker free
- Integration with AMD and NVIDIA products
Cons:
- 60 hertz Refresh Rate, give us at least a 100 hertz.
- Physical controls and OSD menu system a bit difficult to master.

these JLAB True Wireless JBuds mini speakers for your eyeglass frames are an interesting concept. Mini bluetooth speakers which clip onto your eyeglass frame. I found these mainly useful to listen to phone calls, podcasts and other voice driven sound. They provide limited sound fidelity for music although they have two modes which are used to enhance sound through increased bass and another sound profile. Frankly I did not expect much in the way of audio capabilities. As for setup and operation they have a button on each speaker which is used to control various functions and with some common functions between each and others which are left and right specific. The speakers were a bit finicky to pair via bluetooth, but ultimately I was able to pair them and put them to use. One of the good things about these devices is since they are placed near your ears (not in or on) they do not affect your ability to hear ambient sound making you aware of your surroundings. For the same reason they are not immersive. Phone calls are clear and the microphones on these units do a good job of picking up your voice with good quality.
Pros:
- compact
- discrete
- 8hr battery life
- good for spoken content
- comes with a little storage bag
Cons:
- not great for music
- finicky when pairing

Turn on your bright light

Great idea for the dark depths of winter solstice. During this time of year and when the days are short this light instantly brings a sense of positivity with its initially blinding light. However I found after time I could use the full light setting when initially the lowest brightness setting (low, medium, high) was all
I could take. I found multiple purposes for this light including using it for web conferencing (with a mug placed in front of it for a ring halo effect. Overall I found this to be a quality product with many uses.
