Amazing Receive w/ Abundant Options
on July 11, 2018

The Yamaha RX-V685BL is quite an upgrade over my previous receiver that is 15 years old and quite limited on features. That being said, it served a basic purpose. There's nothing basic about this Yamaha receiver.
First, setup was easy enough and Yamaha makes this easy with their Yamaha Parametric Room Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) microphone which helps analyze the acoustics of your room and speaker setup and then adjusts the settings to provide optimum listening. For me, I think it did a good job, but I did tweak some of the individual speaker settings to better suit my preferences.
Speaking of settings, this receiver has a plethora of settings. I'm a pretty tech savvy guy, but I can see people getting lost in all of the settings. If you're an audiophile, you'll probably love it. Accessing those settings is easy via the on-screen menus. Thank goodness the days of scrolling through vague LED menus via the receiver display. This is made easy by the receiver remote which I find to be quite stylish and modern if not modestly sized. Additionally, you can change settings via the Yamaha MusicCast App.
I was very pleased with the MusicCast app as it shows a lot of thought and planning went into its design. This isn't the case in most companion apps so props to Yamaha.
So what about sound? The receiver did exactly what it is meant to do which is power whatever speakers you attach to it according to the settings (of which there are many) you select. I found the sound to be excellent and quite an upgrade from my previous lower powered receiver. For those average users, much of your sound quality will depend on your speakers. If you have premium speakers, this receiver will certainly compliment them and make sure that you're getting the most out of your speakers.
In conclusion, the Yamaha RX-V685 is an excellent receiver that will compliment your home theater system. Not only will it power your speakers, but it provides an endless amount of options to customize your experience. The app functionality was really a treat for me and I enjoyed being able to stream music directly through the receiver. It's probably more than most will need or use, but you never know. It'll will certainly give you the options to expand and improve your home theater.

Great Potential But Not Quite There
on June 20, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
I was very excited to try the Google Clips. I must say, I didn't quite understand the concept of a camera that would automatically take candid photos since it sounded more like a security camera to me. If anything, I thought it would be interesting to see some fun pictures of my cat during the day but also might work for a party/gathering of friends.
Out of the box, the camera is small (about 2x2x2") so it's easy to place pretty much anywhere. The camera comes with a case that doubles as a stand/clip. It also includes a USB-C charging cable that when fully charged will get you approximately 3 hours of use.
Setup is very easy and intuitive as with most Google products. It does require downloading the Clips app, but it's actually nice to see a well functioning app. This isn't the case with many new products these days. The Clips app allows you to review, edit, and delete pictures via Bluetooth. As I mentioned, the app provides a lot of functionality, but it only allows access to one person at a time.
The main purpose of the Google Clips is to provide candidate photos of life's moments. The built in AI is supposed to recognize family, friends, and pets but I wasn't able to verify this. It seemed like it pretty much took a picture of anything that moved. Sometimes when I tried to pose for a picture, it wouldn't take it. You can manually take a picture from the camera itself but that kind of defeats the purpose. I think one of the major challenges to the Clip is camera placement. With proper placement, you can get some neat pictures of gatherings and pets. However, throwing it on a counter or side table will get you garbage. The pictures quality is quite nice. It's equal to that of what you get on a nice cell phone these days.
The Clips comes with 16GB onboard memory that isn't expandable. This should be sufficient--especially considering the battery life is only approximately 3 hours. That battery life is a huge disappointment and major limitation in my opinion. As I mentioned earlier, placement is key and the AI isn't so intelligent so it takes a picture of most anything that moves. Because of this, the 3 hour battery life might not last throughout your event. Thankfully, the device continues to function and take pictures even if plugged in and charging. However, that does limit your placement options so a larger battery that could last 5+ hours would've made it a lot more useful. Also, there's no way to tell if the Clips is taking a picture. While it's supposed to be candid, some discreet indicator would've been nice.
In conclusion, the Google Clips is a nice toy to have and you can get some good shots. To get those shots, you'll likely have to filter through a lot of garbage. The limited battery life and high price are sticking points for me. If you want to drop the dough on something to surprise friends and family with that candid shot they didn't know you took, then you won't be disappointed. Just be aware it takes some effort.
Pros:
*Great candid pictures
*Size
*App functionality
Cons:
*Price
*Battery life
*Lack of picture indicator

Nostalgic Throw Back Novelty
on June 14, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Polaroid Originals OneStep 2 was a mixed experience for me. While I appreciate the retro experience with instant tangible pictures that you can pass around, I also love the amazing quality that modern cameras produce at a fraction of the cost.
First, the design and build just feels awkward to me. I get that it is essentially a replica of the original cameras from back in the day, but I just feels clunky to me. Personally, I'd rather have a modern sleek design that spits out a great Polaroid. Second, the viewfinder isn't a true viewfinder. That is to say what you see through the viewfinder isn't a true representation of what the lens is seeing. To me, that could've been so easily done, but wasn't.
Picture quality is something that you have to adjust your expectations. You're not going to get a DSLR quality or even a cell phone quality picture with this camera. Hence, I think it is more of a novelty item. Would it work well for parties as an instant hand out? Sure. To me, it's like a portable photo booth. Quality isn't great, but it's fast enough to give instant gratification and either impress or distress some of those who aren't used to pictures without filters and editing.
As someone who is very cost aware, the $1-2 a photo is enough to be all but cost prohibitive. Even as a teenager (before the days of cell phone and digital cameras) I loved taking pictures. Film and development costs were cheap enough you didn't sweat a few extra pictures to make sure you got a good one. With this camera, you better make sure you're happy with the first one because it won't be cheap if you need multiple tries.
In conclusion, I just can't get behind this product for anything other than a novelty item. Maybe for a young kid or a special occasion as something to give guests an immediate takeaway. Either way, it will be quite costly given how we can easily take 10s-100s of pictures on any given event! The design, picture quality (expected given the format), and cost just make this a product I believe will have a very limited market.
Pros:
*Novelty
*Immediate tangibility
Cons:
*Design
*Cost of film ($1-2 a picture)
*Picture quality

Excellent headphones / Charging Pod Needs Update
on June 9, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Sony SP700N True Sports Wireless Noise Canceling Earbud Headphones are very stylishly designed (as far as wireless earbuds go) and come nicely packaged. They have two size of ear wings (they hook on the inside of your ear, not outside) and four sizes of silicone tips so you should be able to find a good fit for almost any ear. Unlike some other wireless ear buds, these don't stick out too far from your ear. I just find those make you look a little funny. One draw back (and not a minor one) is the charging pod that comes with the headphones and the only way to charge them. Initially, the design looks quite nice. However, upon use, the lid seems very fragile--especially the way in which it opens which is a horizontal swivel. There's also no way to determine the charge level of the charging pod or the headphones themselves except an obscure red LED on the back of the pod which only indicates whether it is charging or not. So good luck if you want to know whether there is 30 minutes of charge or 9 hours.
As soon as you turn the power on, they'll pair up quickly and easily with your phone. As with most Sony products, these headphones produce a very nice quality sound. With the Extra Bass feature, they also pack a nice punch with bass. Most should like this for their workout jam. They also have good mids and high range sounds so your workouts will be clear and crisp. What's really key is that you get the right fit with the silicone tips so that the sound is all sealed in. Unfortunately, I felt that the noise cancelling was pretty unremarkable and useless. I have a pair of Sony's 1000XM2 headphones and they truly cancel the outside world. I realize these headphones serve a very different purpose, but I could barely tell that NC was activated. Ambient Noise does a good job of amplifying surrounding noise to allow you to remain aware of your surroundings which could be helpful in certain circumstances like running along a road.
Battery time is rated at approximately 3 hours but will vary depending on your level of use and features being used. The charging pod holds 9 hours worth of charge so one full charge of the pod should keep your workout going even on an extended length vacation. The SP700Ns do have a 'quick charge' feature where 15 minutes in the pod provides 70 minutes of use which is always nice when you decide you need a last minute workout and forgot to charge your headphones.
Overall, I think these are a good pair of sport headphones (sweat and 'splash' resistant. I always judge headphones based on their main purpose which is sound. I think these have excellent sound for the size and that live up to the Sony standard. As far as noise cancelling, not so much. I really found that feature to be pretty much useless but then again, I don't consider noise cancelling to be an important feature for sport headphones. The headphones themselves are designed well, but the charging pod could've use some more attention. I think most would be very satisfied with their purchase of these headphones and get a lot of use out of them.
Pros:
*Size/Design/Quality of the headphones
*Battery Life
*Sound
*Price
Cons:
*Noise Cancelling
*Charging pod design

Tap on NFC-compatible Bluetooth devices to connect and go with these Sony wireless headphones. Their noise-cancelling technology keeps you focused on your music, while their Ambient Sound Mode mixes in voices and other external sounds you need to hear. Sweat and splashes are not a problem for these water-resistant IPX4-rated Sony wireless headphones.

Good Sport Headphones / Noise Cancelling a Miss
on June 3, 2018

The Sony SP600N Sports Wireless Noise Canceling In-Ear Headphones are stylishly designed and come nicely packaged. They have two size of ear hooks (they hook on the inside of your ear, not outside) and four sizes of silicone tips so you should be able to find a good fit for almost any ear. I like that these headphones don't have an excess of cord. It's just enough to drape around your neck and go up to your ears. I have other headphones where there's some sagging of the cords on the front side and that can get in the way. One thing that would be nice is some sort of clip to clip part of the wire to your shirt or necklace just for added security.
As soon as you turn the power on, they'll pair up quickly and easily with your phone. As with most Sony products, these headphones produce a nice quality sound. With the Extra Bass feature, they also pack a nice punch with bass. They also have good mids and high range sounds so your workout jam will be clear and crisp. Ambient Noise does a good job of amplifying surrounding noise to allow you to remain aware of your surroundings.
Battery time is rated at approximately 6 hours. I was able to confirm this over multiple days of use at varying levels. Quick recharge within an hour provides easy use and reuse.

Great Set of Headphones
on May 14, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The JBL / Under Armour Sport Flex headphones are very impressive. My expectations weren't all that high, but boy am I surprised.
First, they are packaged very nicely--much better than a competitors around the neck headphones that actually cost more. Props to JBL for not skimping on this aspect.
Getting started, the JBLs paired quickly with my phone. Once around my neck, they felt weightless and secure. I did about 30 min of running on the treadmill without any issue. The earbuds always felt secure. My other over the neck headphones are a little too flexible/limp. The JBLs provide just the right amount of rigidity and just the right amount of flex. Additionally, the earbuds are magnetized so they can stick together when not in your ear. This is good if you take them out for a bit, they are flopping all over. Another issue I've experienced with my other pair.
As far as sound go, I think these provide a really good sound. It's not going to transport you to the concert hall like a $500 pair might, but they are actually very good. Decent bass with good mids and highs. The silicone tips fit my ear perfectly, but there are other sizes included. I think the fit can make a big difference in the sound you experience so make sure the fit is right for you. Either way, I can tell the hardware behind the tips is quality and will power you through your workout or if you're just sitting at your desk.
The charge time is rated at 12 hours. Actual use is pretty close to this. I tried it fully charged and started at 8am. I got about 2 full work days out of it and that's about right with meetings and interruptions.
The neckband does have a nice LED light on the back with several different settings. I enjoyed it and found it interesting, but it's probably more of a conversation piece or for show than actually practical. I wouldn't rely on it to catch the attention of some texting driver at night, but I guess every little bit helps.
In conclusion, I'd highly recommend these headphones for the active person or someone who just wants a nice set of headphones to wear at work. I don't care to have the over the ear kind as it can mess up my hair and they are so good at isolating me from my environment. These will give you some music to jam to whether you're working out or working on a spreadsheet and can be easily pulled out/put back in if someone pops in for a quick meeting.

Excellent Mouse for Gaming & Everyday Use
on May 1, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
I love my new Corsair Dark Core mouse! Out of the box, it is an easy setup whether using wireless (wifi or bluetooth) or wired. The textured surface of the mouse is really something else. It feels comfortable and part of your hand. You can really tell that it's meant for many many hours of hard core game play. The adjustable lights built into the mouse are a nice flashy feature even if they may not be that useful.
In the game, I noticed no lag so perfect for those sniping sessions or quick maneuvers. The mouse has NINE programmable buttons so no more (or at least a little less) fumbling around on the keyboard for your hotkeys.
Outside of the game, the Corsair was far more comfortable than any standard office mouse. I do some light picture editing and having a price smooth mouse is critical! I found no issues with the Corsair and it actually made the process much easier and more enjoyable.
Battery life is good, but I am still a fan of replaceable batteries. In a pinch, you can replace them and be on your way rather than have to wait for a recharge. Of course, if you're planning on using the wired version, this won't be an issue.
In all, I would highly recommend the Corsair Dark Core gaming mouse for use with gaming and without.

Great Router w/ Cool Design
on April 8, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Norton Core is a really cool looking wireless router with all the features of a modern router plus added security features that will help keep all of your connected devices secure.
Setup was a breeze via the Norton Core app and took very little effort. The router itself is a very cool geodesic design which would feel at home on an end table or entertainment center--not hidden away like most routers. The router comes with 3 built in LAN connections which should be sufficient for most areas (TV, gaming console, etc.)
The Norton Core is has more than enough power to handle all of your wireless devices for streaming 4K, gaming, web surfing, and social media. As I've stated before in other reviews, the ability to do a lot of this is just as dependent on the speed of your ISP as the capabilities of your modem/router.
The Norton Core comes with a complimentary 1yr subscription to Norton Security Plus which helps with security your personal devices and parental controls. I don't think it's necessary but some people like additional piece of mind.
For those of us who live around lots of people, I didn't experience any problems with signal interference due to the proximity of other routers. The Norton Core has features that allow you to set priorities so that your gaming or video devices always experience lag free performance.
In conclusion, I think the Norton Core is an excellent router with some really impressive security features. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for some extra piece of mind above and beyond the typical router.

Amazing Sound w/ Great Features and Capabilities
on March 29, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
The Sony SRS-XB41 exceeded all of my expectations--especially given the reasonable price of $249.99, stylish yet rugged design, and quality sound. Additionally, the light bars illuminate and change with the music and do a remarkable job of adjusting to the different moods of music.
First, the design of the SRS-XB41 feels very substantial as is it's size. It's not a small pocket speaker by any means, but would easily fit in a backpack, beach tote, or other carrying case and leave plenty of room for your favorite things. The special 'fabric' doesn't really feel like a fabric at all and would be very easy to rinse off should the speaker get dirty. This is especially good news for me as I like to visit the beach and have had issues with sand getting in other speakers. Without being able to wash the speaker, the sand is basically there to stay. There is a small access port in the back where you can charge the unit, connect to a 3.5mm jack and with additional controls. This access port/panel is covered by a thick rubber cover that stays put.
The most important aspect of the unit is the sound. I compared the Sony SRS-XB41 to a Sony SRS-XB31 and Bose Soundlink Mini II which produces rich and room filling sounds. The Sony exceeded the performance of the Bose in all but one category--clarity. The base thumped more and provided the perfect level of music when I had some friends over. Even though the Bose outperformed the Sony with clarity, it only beat it by a little and I found the Sony's other excellent performance more than made up for it. Between the two Sonys, the XB41 outperformed the XB31 in all areas simply because of its size. I found the XB41 to fill not only my open kitchen and living room area, but my bedroom, bathroom, and office! Music was clear without being overwhelming. Rich sounds could be heard throughout my apartment.
The light bars provide a mesmerizing experience. Whether you are chilling out with some new age syth or dancing to the latest EDM, the light bars adjust to provide the right atmosphere and keep you guessing with an endless variety of lighting effects. One thing that is important to me, the lighting effects can be disabled or restricted to a certain color/style of light transition. This is important as sometimes you don't want the lighting to feel like a rave. Maybe you just want a cool color ambient light to go along with your music and the app does allow you to make these adjustment. One critique is that I would prefer more customization such as being able to disable the speaker lights which currently isn't available via the Sony companion app. You can restrict it to keep the strobes from flashing and restrict it to a color range and even a "calm" atmosphere so the lighting effects are subtle. These are all great, but I just wish there was a simple on/off for both the strobes and white lights that illuminate the speakers themselves.
The companion app with the Sony SRS-XB41 is useful to change the lighting settings, sound mode, and other less important settings. While the initial bluetooth connection took only a few seconds, actually getting the app to recognize the speaker even though it was already paired with my phone seemed to take more effort. Granted, it isn't required or even needed, but it could use a little tweaking to make the app/speaker interface a little more smooth.
In conclusion, I think the Sony SRS-XB41 is an excellent speaker option. Given the price point of approximately $250, I think it's a bargain given the light bars, battery life (up to 24 hours), and sound quality/level. It could VERY easily fill a backyard with great full range sound. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for something that is fun at home, fun at the beach, or wherever you decide to take it.
Pros:
-Sound quality
-Bass
-Build quality
-Light effects
Cons:
-Companion App needs some work

Meet the secure, tamper-proof smart lock from Nest and Yale. It’s keyless, so you can lock and unlock the door from anywhere with the Nest app.[1] Give people you trust a passcode instead of a key, and get alerts when they come and go. And lock the door with a tap. If you forget, the Nest x Yale Lock even reminds you.

Excellent Lock with a new Spin
on March 23, 2018
Posted by: abl001
from Memphis, TN
I was really impressed by the construction of the Nest x Yale lock. It is heavy and substantial so it doesn't feel cheap or of low quality. It is exactly what you'd want a door lock to feel like to make you feel secure.
I am not a handy man, but I was able to follow the instructions as well as the Nest videos on YouTube for some added guidance. It took me a little longer than your average person, probably 20-25 min to get it fully installed and setup, but most of that was me fumbling around with the old lock and getting the new one installed. First lock I've ever changed so if I can do it, anyone should be able to do it.
Love all the features that come with it. Temporary pass codes, assigned pass codes for different people, and the ability to remote lock/unlock from the companion app which surprisingly was well thought out unlike so many other companion apps these days.
Overall, I'd highly recommend this if you want to provide controlled access to a room or to your home. The batteries are supposed to last a year, but the app will alert you when they need replacing. I can see this coming in very handy for so many different scenarios.. Expensive delivery you can't be around for? Provide the temporary code to the delivery person so it can be left inside free from porch pirates. Maintenance need inside? Unlock remotely once they've called you. Friends from out of town arriving early and you can't be there to welcome them? Unlock remotely or give them a temporary code to use while they are visiting. Gone are the days of having random spare keys floating around.
Pros:
-Style
-Functionality
-Companion App
Cons:
-Battery lfe

Keep the music going at your next party or backyard barbecue with this Sony portable Bluetooth speaker, which features a six-hour battery life. The compact size fits neatly on a desk or table, while the splash-proof design makes this speaker perfect beach adventures. Use the on-speaker buttons to start your tunes or turn up the volume. This Sony portable Bluetooth speaker comes with EXTRA BASS sound to bring out the best in your playlists.

Can you skip songs using the volume buttons on the speaker?

Yes. By pressing the play/pause/call button twice quickly during playback, the XB01 will skip to the beginning of the next song. I found it necessary to wait a second or two until the next song began playing before skipping to the next song. If it registers your presses too close together (3 presses), it may think you want to go back to the beginning of the current song.

How are these for running on a treadmill, I have a problem keeping Apple earbuds and other wireless earphones in my right ear when I run. Will these stay in for someone with small ears?

I think this will vary by person and the individual shape of your ear, but I don't have issues on the treadmill.

Surround yourself with robust audio performance in a slim package with this LG ultra-slim soundbar. Compatible with the latest LG televisions, the compact soundbar pairs seamlessly to deliver an immersive audio-visual experience. The 4K high resolution audio on this LG ultra-slim soundbar lets you hear the action in every scene.

Two questions: 1) Since this sound bar does not have a center speaker, how is dialogue clarity? 2) Can the subwoofer just be used occasionally; that is can it be turned off and on?

1) Dialogue clarity is excellent! 2) The sub can be turned down via the remote control so that it is virtually inactive. You can also adjust the sound EQ to turn the bass up or down to your preference. I found the LG SJ8 to really perform well in not overpowering the bass like some subs can do.

Immerse yourself in music or movies with this LG TONE Studio wearable speaker. It has four drivers to let you experience three-dimensional surround sound and feel low-frequency vibrations from the bass through your body. This LG TONE Studio wearable speaker is Bluetooth compatible for easy connection to your smart devices.

so this is a speaker that you wear around your neck? Does the sound work with and without the ear buds?

Yes. There is a switch on the neckband that allows you to easily switch between headphone mode and external speaker mode. You can set the unit down and listen without wearing it, but the sound quality is much much better when worn as intended.
