Big Picture in a Small Package

The LG - PH30JG 720p DLP wireless projector provides a surprising picture quality for such a small projector.
Upon opening the box, the LG is packed snugly with its accompanying power cord, paper documentation, and remote control. The projector itself has the footprint of an iPhone 6S Plus and is about 3" thick. It's quite compact and could easily go inside a laptop bag or be carried in your hand. It could even fit in a loose pocket.
Setup is as easy as plugging the projector in, pressing the power button, plugging in an input, and enjoying the view. There are relatively few settings you can adjust compared to most settings, but the important ones are all there and easily accessible.
Once you're viewing, it's quite impressive given the small size. Colors are good. I do find the brightness lacking. That being said, it is still easily seen in a room with lights on. I don't think it would do well in a brightly lit room, but it works just find with average lighting.
I find the limited use of screen mirroring and sharing of HD videos to those compatible with miracast and WiDi to be extremely limiting. There's got to be a better way! The four hour batter can come in extremely handy if you're out on a camping trip or somewhere where there isn't a convenient power outlet.
In conclusion, I think the LG - PH30JG is an excellent option for those who need a reliable and very portable projector. The color and clarity is all very good but I'd recommend using in a darker environment for best results. Certainly not necessary though.

Good Projector for Everyday Use

The Epson Pro EX7260 is a very good projector for everyday use both in and out of the office. Note that this projector is intended primarily for office use. Because of this, it has a much higher lumen (brightness) output since most business projectors are used in bright conference rooms and need to be seen over the lights. That being said, there is nothing stopping you from using this at home or for other purposes. Just keep in mind, the contrast ratio and resolution aren't going to match that of those specifically designed for home theater use.
Out of the box, the Epson Pro EX7260 was very easy to setup. It surprisingly comes with a soft carrying case, VGA cable, and USB cable along with the expected remote (batteries included), and power cord. At just over 5lbs, it's very light weight and wouldn't be a hassle if you needed to be mobile with it. I will say, I'm not a fan of the Epson iProjection system which can be used to project/screen mirror from your phone or other compatible device. I just don't find it as functional for what I use a projector for, but some definitely would--especially if all you are doing is reviewing docs, pictures, and websites.
The project is plenty bright. Very bright, which you would expect from a business projector. The EX7260 also comes with a pretty long bulb life of up to 10,000 hours (ECO mode) and 6,000 hours (Normal mode). I found ECO mode to be completely adequate for my needs even in a very bright room with lit with florescent lights.
The EX7260 does come with a 2 watt speaker built-in speaker that is, as you can imagine, underwhelming. It does what it's designed to, but is just so tinny. Great speakers can come in small packages and the laptop I'm using to write this review is no exception. Espon should've put a little more effort into the speaker. If using this on the road, you shouldn't have to drag a clunky pair of computer speakers along to make up for a speaker that sounds like it's been salvaged from the inside of a 1980s model PC.
Overall, I think the Epson Pro EX7260 delivers solid performance as a projector and would be worthwhile investment for your office (or home) needs. The ease of setup and connection make it quick to use out of the box or carrying case. The connectivity features are sure to prove useful for most.

Great Scalable Security System

The SimpliSafe Protect Home Security System is a great entry level system that can provide some peace of mind to those who want protection without the complicated process of a standard system hardwired/installed system.
The SimpliSafe system comes with a base module, keypad, motion sensor, and four window/door sensors. The base can be placed in a central location while the keypad and sensors need to be within 400 ft. Each sensor and the keypad can be attached via a adhesive pad which is nice since it doesn't require any drilling so perfect for those in an apartment or other place where you might not want to permanently alter the property.
I really like that the SimpliSafe Home Protect is easily scalable. Buy what you need when you need it. They have cameras, additional door/window sensors, and additional motion sensors should you need them.
You pay SimpliSafe for the monitoring, but you own the security system. Should someone break in, the base system will notify the monitoring service via cell network so there are no land lines required! Each sensor is battery powered so the system is completely wireless.
In conclusion, I think this is a very reasonably priced security system with monitored service (monthly fee required). That's important to note since some systems basically alert you if a sensor is activated or alarm is triggered. This system will alert you and the police/fire so it is more like a standard security monitoring service. It's scalable so you can expand and add features as needed. My only critique is that the alarm isn't as loud as I would like, but that may not matter as much since it will be alerting the police as well.

Exceeded All Expectations!

The Sony SRS-XB31 exceeded all of my expectations--especially given it's very reasonable price of $149.99 Excellent design and impressive sound. Additionally, the light bars illuminate and change with the music and do a remarkable job of adjusting to the mood of the music.
First, the design of the SRS-XB31 feels very substantial. The special 'fabric' doesn't really feel like a fabric at all and would be very easy to rinse off should the speaker get dirty. This is especially good news for me as I like to visit the beach and have had issues with sand getting in other speakers. Without being able to wash the speaker, the sand is basically there to stay. There is a small access port in the back where you can charge the unit, connect to a 3.5mm jack and with additional controls. This access port/panel is covered by a thick rubber cover that stays put.
The most important aspect of the unit is the sound. I compared the Sony SRS-XB31 to a Bose Soundlink Mini II which produces rich and room filling sounds. The Sony exceeded the performance of the Bose in all but one category--clarity. The base thumped more and provided the perfect level of music when I had some friends over. Even though the Bose outperformed the Sony with clarity, it only beat it by a little and I found the Sony's other excellent performance more than made up for it.
The light bars provide a mesmerizing experience. Whether you are chilling out with some new age syth or dancing to the latest EDM, the light bars adjust to provide the right atmosphere and keep you guessing with an endless variety of lighting effects. One thing that is important to me, the lighting effects can be disabled or restricted to a certain color/style of light transition. This is important as sometimes you don't want the lighting to feel like a rave. Maybe you just want a cool color ambient light to go along with your music and the app does allow you to make these adjustment.
The companion app with the Sony SRS-XB31 is usefully to change the lighting settings, sound mode, and other less important settings. While the initial bluetooth connection took only a few seconds, actually getting the app to recognize the speaker even though it was already paired with my phone. It could use a little work.
In conclusion, I think the Sony SRS-XB31 is an excellent speaker option. Given the price point of approximately $150, I think it's a bargain given the light bars, battery life (up to 24 hours), and sound quality. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for something that is fun at home, fun at the beach, or wherever you decide to take it.

Fantastic Clarity and Range

The Sennheiser HD1 headphones came in a very nicely packaged box that you would expect from a premium brand boasting a $500 price tag. Out of the box, the carrying case is fairly large but, again, feels very nice to the touch and shows off your high-end headwear.
After slipping the headphones on you notice the luxurious feel of the leather headband and ear padding. Press the power button and it almost immediately connects to your phone when in pairing mode. I also enjoyed the female British voice. I think anything British always adds a nice touch over the American accent.
I immediately began to play my favorite tunes and noticed the precision clarity that the Sennheiser HD1s deliver. Every note, every nuance. The bass won't rattle your ear drum, but it did deliver solid performance and I think most would call it a good balance as some can come over juiced with bass these days.
Noise cancelling was good, but not fantastic. I would say slightly less than your Bose QC35 or Sony 1000X MKII. It blocked out most ambient noise and did it with less 'pressure' that I feel with the other two.
In conclusion, the Sennheiser HD1s are an excellent pair of headphones--especially for those of you who appreciate the intricate details of music in all it's forms. They carry a premium price but definitely deliver a premium product.

Great Soft Ambiance Light

My Philips Hue Ambiance Wellner Lamp arrived and I was very excited to add it to my Philips Hue collection.
Packing is nicely done. When opening, I kept looking for more. It's just the glass lamp and a light bulb that you screw in. I thought, surely there is a base that the glass attaches to, but nope! I don't think it detracts from the attractiveness, but I would've appreciated a brushed nickle or some type of accent stand--especially for the price.
Setup is a breeze. Basically screw in the bulb, plug it in, and connect to the Hue Bridge.
While this lamp doesn't come with a full color bulb, it is 100% interchangeable in case you want a little flare with your lamp. The white ambiance bulb is impressive. The light mimics natural light so it can go from warm white tones to cool white. I'm always one for warm white which is very relaxing whether reading, watching TV, or getting ready for bed.
In all, I love the addition to my bedroom and I think it'd make a great addition to any space where you'd like additional light. It's plenty bright enough to light up the room without feeling harsh and can be soft enough to create a relaxing and warm environment. My only suggestion would be to add a small base to it.

Love the Design/Look, Hate the Execution & Quality

The JBL Free True Wireless headphones had me very excited. I've tried a competitors version and it left something to be desired. I had hoped that that "something" would be these. Unfortunately, there seem to be some critical issues that need to be fixed. Maybe this was a rush for the holiday shopping season, but it needs to be fixed.
First, the good. I love the design and small fit of the ear buds. The blue accent ring really adds a nice touch. Blue is also my favorite color. These come with three silicone tips that can be swapped out to find the right fit. I didn't have any issue and did a solid hour workout in the gym and didn't find myself worrying that they would come out. They also come with a nice charging case which is also stylishly designed with lights on the outside to indicate charging level. I would've preferred a bit smaller charging case, but that is minor.
Battery life is excellent and should provide more than enough (approx 4 hours) for your workout. When done, pop them back in the charging case and you can get around 5 more full charges out of them before the case itself needs to be recharged.
Now for the average and bad...
The sound is just so-so. I didn't expect a truly amazing experience given these are in such a small package, but had hoped for better base and tone. As others have mention, I found the sound a bit 'tinny.'
Unfortunately, the main problem I noticed with this headset is that the right and left earbuds have pairing issues. I never had an issue pairing with my phone, but the left earbud kept losing connection. This made the entire experience unenjoyable and it kept happening. Troubleshooting didn't resolve so this is maybe a hardware issue.
In all, I can't recommend these until this issue is fixed. Once fixed, they'd be a solid wireless earbud option even though I think they are a bit overpriced for the sound provided.

Nice Watch w/ Clunky Companion App

There seems to be a trend lately where companies are pushing products out the door with companion apps that are far from prime time ready. The Epson ProSense 307 is one of those products. While the watch itself is quite nice and has lots of features, accessing and fully utilizing those features requires using the companion app. Unfortunately, that app is clunky, slow, and not intuitive.
The ProSense 307 is great for tracking your workouts, runs, walks, swims, and sleep. I found it surprisingly accurate when measuring the distance when compared to the actual distance showed on the treadmill. It even surprises in the pool! Technology is a wonderful thing these days.
While there are some customizable options, I would prefer more. This is something that could've easily been added with just a little more effort.
Overall, my experience with smart watches/workout trackers has been disappointing. The Epson ProSense has some promise, it has yet to deliver in my opinion. Color display with more options is definitely needed along with a much much needed app update. If you're looking for something basic to track your workouts, then this should serve you well. But with a $250 price tag, that's a lot of dough to drop when there are better products out there for less.

Excellent Workout Earbuds

The Plantronics Backbeat FIT 305 were a very pleasant surprise. I've had a pair of Plantronics before and wasn't impressed. However, these were quite stylishly designed and had an excellent build quality.
The fit of these earbuds felt as natural as something sticking in your ear can feel, but they always felt secure no matter what I did to try and jar them loose. If the buds aren't fitting perfect, they come with three sizing options included.
Sound quality was far above what I was expecting for a set of wireless earbuds under $100. Obviously not quite as nice as if you'd spent $400 on an over the ear set, but still impressive. It provides great sound to get your workout routine started and enough juice to help you end it. Mid-levels and high notes are a little more prominent than bass, but that is to be expected with an earbud. Even then, it was more than enough to block out traffic and crowds.
They are rated at 6 hours, but I was able to get more out of them. This will vary depending on your use but 6 hours should be easily done. Once you've drained them, they recharge in a modest two hours.
In conclusion, The Plantronics Backbeat FIT 305s are an excellent bargain for someone who wants a little more security in fit than a standalone earbud without wire. I would highly recommend these.

Great Entry Level Security System

For your average Joe who just wants to have some peace of mind while they are at work or on vacation, the Arlo Pro 2 system is a good option. The wireless cameras can be powered by wire or via battery. Wired opens up some more beneficial features like constant recording. Obviously, with a battery based system, it relies on a trigger before recording. Otherwise, you'd eat up all of your storage. As is, right out of the box, you get 7 days of free cloud storage for your video.
Setup was incredibly easy. Plug into your home router, turn on cameras, and press the sync button. Arlo has a very nice app as well as web based access which has a lot of features.
Build quality is quite nice. The cameras are sturdy, look professional, and all kinds of add-ons/accessories to make them fit your needs. The packaging looked very cheap so they could improve that.
Functionality-wise, the Arlo 2 Pro provide a good level of monitoring. You get alerts directly to your phone if something triggers your system. From there, you can view live (slight delay) video/audio as well as talk. So if you see an unwanted visitor on your doorstep, you can scare them away by letting them know they are being recorded or you're calling the cops, etc.
Daytime picture quality is excellent. I'd give nighttime quality 3.5 stars. That being said, there's not a lot of cameras that can do good nighttime pictures--even on our expensive $1,000 iPhones.
In conclusion, I'd say that the Arlo Pro 2 is a great system for someone looking to provide some basic security/surveillance for their home/office. For $500, I think it's an excellent system.

How are these for running on a treadmill, I have a problem keeping Apple earbuds and other wireless earphones in my right ear when I run. Will these stay in for someone with small ears?
I think this will vary by person and the individual shape of your ear, but I don't have issues on the treadmill.

Two questions: 1) Since this sound bar does not have a center speaker, how is dialogue clarity? 2) Can the subwoofer just be used occasionally; that is can it be turned off and on?
1) Dialogue clarity is excellent! 2) The sub can be turned down via the remote control so that it is virtually inactive. You can also adjust the sound EQ to turn the bass up or down to your preference. I found the LG SJ8 to really perform well in not overpowering the bass like some subs can do.

so this is a speaker that you wear around your neck? Does the sound work with and without the ear buds?
Yes. There is a switch on the neckband that allows you to easily switch between headphone mode and external speaker mode. You can set the unit down and listen without wearing it, but the sound quality is much much better when worn as intended.
