Keep your home dust-free with this Bissell AirRAM cordless vacuum. Its high-performance F.U.E.L. cell provides up to 30 minutes of run time, while the advanced compression technology lets it store as much dirt as typical bagless vacuums. This Bissell AirRAM cordless vacuum has a low profile for easy maneuvering around furniture.

Cord-free vacuuming

BISSELL 1984 AIR RAM cordless 22V Vacuum
I got our Bissel last evening and let it charge overnight (it needs about 5 hours charge time). This morning we needed about 5 minutes to get it ready for use. Everything fits together nicely, without the need for instructions. It’s all plastic, but the fit, weight, and finish left us with no concerns. Time will tell.
Ergonomically, the Bissel has its act together. The weight of the vac from the user’s perspective is quite low because the balance is near perfect, with most of the weight in the head sitting on the floor. Maneuvering the Bissel was helped by the comfortable handle and a lower grab bar. The points of rotation provide comfortable control over the vac during any typical pushing or pulling, Upright “Lock” position is a reassuring click although you might wonder just how robust these plastic parts really are. The large ON/OFF power button is easy to push with your toe. The dust collector chamber releases easily. There is no indication that this is a HEPA filtered vac, if that is a concern. It also looks like you have to empty the dirt chamber manually, but the process is made easier with a lever that forces the dirt out. You will want to wash the filter occasionally. and can only use it when dry. I see no reference to replacement filters.
Actual use was almost fun. The flexibility, size, and weight of the Bissell made using it quite easy in every room, getting under beds and sofas or into closets. The suction was powerful and lasted through an entire cleaning session in our 2800sq ft house. The 22V battery easily approaches the power I’ve come to expect in my power tools, full power for an extended period of use. A run across carpets and floors resulted in a full dirt canister. Transitions over rug edges required some care, because the suction will lift the edges. Sound level measured in my quiet room is typically 47dB, and the operating Bissell increased that to 78dB(rugs), and 81dB (hard floor). You might not even need to raise the TV volume.
I liked the new Bissell quite a bit. I am concerned about the filtering issue, believing that this premium vacuum ought to have readily available filter replacements, maybe even a HEPA filter option for the exhaust. (The filter isn't described as lifetime.) Heavy users might even want an extra battery. [A cheaper device might be considered a throwaway. This feels more premium and should be supported as a premium product.] Other than that, I can highly recommend this premium quality vacuum.

Can a computer be sensuous?
on October 13, 2016
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
HP Spectre X360 13-w013dx
What am I reviewing? This is an HP 2-in-1 convertible 13” laptop/tablet I7-7500U (2.7GHz) Processor; 256Gb Solid State Drive; 8MB SDRAM; Win10; 13.3” HD LED display; Bang & Olufson speakers; HP IR Camera. MSRP $1149. 3.17lbs. 12” x 8.6 x 0.63 in.
Summary: Can you rationally describe a computer as elegant? sensuous? surely sensible is fair game? Everything about the HP Spectre X360 says it’s special. In the Windows world, this is probably the closest device to Apple’s own “Air”, with everything a PC owner would insist on having. The HP fully challenges everything: size, weight, features, speed, battery life, charging time all while transforming into a tablet when useful. Wireless connectivity was fast and reliable. I should emphasize the speed: if you haven’t used a flash hard drive yet, you’ll find yourself checking why nothing happened. Well it did, but you blinked and missed it. Very easy to like.
Details: This is one of those best-of-both worlds carry-around laptops. I mean, really, you hardly know you’re carrying it. At 3 pounds, you are carrying a tablet, no actually a full laptop, that you’ll no longer be able to claim is your alternative to a weight workout. And the hands-on experience is quite special. First I need to comment on the packaging. I love the trend to packaging premium electronics in a manner that acknowledges you’ve paid a premium price. It’s such a nice introduction to a product.
Inside the box is a petite and sleek, but solid, laptop that neatly and completely folds backwards into a tablet. The screen asks your permission to switch modes (shutting off the mechanical keyboard). I’m not sure it matters. The touch screen is always enabled. If I get frustrated scrolling a screen using the touch pad while in laptop configuration, I just reach over and touch and drag the screen directly. Sweet. The operating system is Windows 10, which makes my transition from a MAC pretty intuitive. More traditional PC users may be less impressed, but I like the redundancy, the ability to modify the amount of detail that MS buries me under, and the especially practical graphic representation of my work space.
Usability is very high. Th screen appears to be bright and contrasty, but mostly accurate. The keyboard has very good feel with helpful feedback and the touch pad sits where you need it and responds positively to presses. I’m not a fan of most PC touch pads, often stopping at the “mouse” aisle before heading home. This pad is better, but I don’t care ‘cause I can reach over and drag across the screen. Great. I thought the B&O speaker designation might be a gimmick. Whoa. As I’m in the process of laughing them off I actually turned on an Adele music file. Shut me up really quick. These are easily the best speakers in any laptop I’ve ever heard. I have no idea why or what these do so differently. No, they aren’t desktop speakers, but shockingly close.
Thank you HP for keeping the space wasting and mostly useless “free” software off the computer. It saved me the frustration of finding and removing it. Yep, this is a premium priced laptop. Remember, in the world of electronics you pay more to get less weight and size while maintaining features. And despite a small footprint, you still get a headphone/microphone shared port, 2 USB Type C ports, a USB port (which can charge attached devices), an infrared camera and lighting, and bluetooth and Wi-FI connectivity. There is little to complain about. I love maximum ports, and this laptop is limited to 3 ports, some of which do double duty. I prefer maximum screen size. But, in a debate with myself about what is more important to me, this time around I’m willing to sacrifice to make this computer easier to grab and run with. And it’s also a tablet. Nicely done HP.

Tangle Free, Noise Free Comfortable Listening
on October 2, 2016
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
This is review of the Bose QuietControl 30. I’m a bit familiar with BOSE headphones. We bought my wife her own Bose® QuietComfort® 20 only a month ago, These new WIRELESS QuietControl 30 headphones appear to be very similar headphones, but NO WIRES needed. The wires are replaced by a very lightweight collar, a convenient adjustment pod on the wire near your right ear, and a free BOSE Connect APP for your phone. The APP allows control over volume, noise reduction and Bluetooth connectivity. Very cool.
My wife is now taking her turn walking around the block, comparing the noise reduction against the neighbor’s power lawn mower, using both phones. I had my turn already. Until she comes back, let’s review the sound quality and other important features of this NEW BOSE QC30 headphone.
I’m also VERY familiar with headphones. I love’em. I’ve got several brands of in-ear phones and a collection of high-end branded over-the-ear phones. Sound quality with these BOSE (QC20/30) is very natural and very well balanced, comparing favorably with those other phones. It may not have the ultimate in treble detail or bass volume, but it more than makes up for it with non-fatiguing, long-term listening quality. Don’t be concerned — there is a solid bass and wide frequency response. And those other phones are overwhelmed by background noise when it’s there.
I tend to favor the over-the-ear — less fuss, reliable seal — but I also acknowledge they can be more cumbersome, especially for travel or trying to catch a nap. These BOSE in-ear phones are quite comfortable, easier to use for me than most in-ears. The BOSE noise cancelling technology is about as good as it gets. What’s especially nice is how well BOSE hides its activity. There is NO background hissing, humming, whooshing or other distractions. OFF: there’s background noise; ON: there is no background noise. No impact on your music or movie which play on against a quiet background. This is how it ought to be. I want that engine noise gone, and so it is.
It is important to realize that wireless involves a few compromises. I love to add my FIOS AMP to my iPhone for maximum power and fidelity. I can easily do that with the QC20, keep the noise cancelling, and learning to live with a bit of wire clutter. I get the extra volume of an amp and some added control over the sound.
Battery life on my first test easily got to 10 hours. Bluetooth connection on day one was quick for both of our phones. It seems two phones are accommodated. The next day connectivity was not as slick. We had to “forget” the device, reconnect to Bluetooth, and then everything worked fine. I’d bet the two phone connections might be an issue; it has occasionally been in our vehicle Bluetooth system. More testing needed.
My wife’s back from her walk. Her verdict? I think I just inherited her QC20. She’s a fan of the QC30 wireless. For her, getting rid of those wires is WONDERFUL. Having her arms uncluttered is WONDERFUL. Having the dial-in noise cancelling is WONDERFUL (the QC20s is ON/OFF, not variable.) So I guess we’ve reached a compromise. A happy wife is a happy life.

It doesn't get much easier to setup a network

NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-Band Wi-Fi
SUMMARY: Actual end user here. I installed this in place of my older, existing network. Did you ever setup some new technology gear and break into a sweat because everything was going badly? Now imagine the exact opposite. I found myself laughing out loud. This new Netgear ORBI is that goofy easy to setup. I’m not a network guru. Sure, I’ve upgraded a few times, but once a year is not going to make me a network specialist. But the Orbi kit worked the first time, and rather well, at that. I’m a satisfied customer.
What is it? The Orbi kit includes two modern-esque cylinders, each about the size of a quart milk carton, which are the master and satellite routers. These devices take the network service delivered to your home (required) and distribute it using Wi-Fi to every other location in you house.
How do I setup my house? Unplug your old router (if you have one) from your provider’s cable/phone modem. Plug in the Orbi “main” Router to both power and the ethernet “out” from the ISP’s modem. The Orbi begins to blink and glow. Go plug in the Orbi Satellite somewhere else in the house. Feel free to connect up to 4 “hard-wired” devices in each router location, because the Orbi has a built-in 4-port ethernet switch. But wireless is the reason you want this device. BE PATIENT. I found the satellite didn’t do anything for more than a minute, maybe longer. Eventually it cycled through the colorful stages of connection as described in the helpful Start Guide. I then went to my computer and called up my web browser. Oddly, the browser had a mind of its own and brought me to the Orbi setup page where I created a password for admin and updated my information. Really. I had called up a Speediest, but my Mac recognized the Orbi on my network. After this, installation software offered to download Updates. Did I say this was goofy easy? This took a few minutes and continued onto registration.
Performance? The speeds I got were measurably better than an already fairly fast router setup I had in place. I simply can’t test the highest available router speeds with a TWC 150Mb/s service limit that often varies by -20%. I can say this setup extracted the highest transport speeds I’ve ever measured. Coverage around the house showed a greater improvement, with video streaming accomplished by all my TVs and computers without hick-ups. I’ll need some more time to see consistency and reliability. So far, I can highly recommend this new Netgear Orbi WiFi gear. No sweat.
[Advanced users, or those needing a more customized setup, are not ignored. You’ll want to read other reviews for critical analysis but here’s my take. The Orbi appears to have a comprehensive set of parameters to modify when I login to the router. There is a BASIC submenu for simple tests, setting parental controls, and viewing attached devices and changing wireless channels. Under an Advanced Menu there are advanced setup features, security variations, re-running the setup wizard and more than enough to get me in trouble. I’ll turn to others before I play here.]

Cool way to add safety and technology to a car
on September 8, 2016
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
from Austin
RandMcNally OverDryve 7
SUMMARY: This is a lengthy review of a feature-rich product, so let me provide a quick summary. While it’s not cheap, I think it is a bargain when you complete a few calculations. Compared to what you pay on new cars for similar features, it’s down-right cheap. When you consider the safety features, it might be a life saver, which is hard to put a price on. Value is a personal calculation, but this device is intensely cool and . . . . really useful. I would not be surprised to see car salespeople whispering in your ear to go check it out and save money on upgrade packages.
UNPACKING: After first unpacking and inspecting the rugged tablet, the mounting brackets and assorted charging cables I can report that Rand McNally (RM) is following the lead of premium electronics companies. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but over the last few years, luxury manufacturers have pampered their purchasers by presenting their products in premium packaging. It’s a nice introduction to a new product and adds to the experience.
INITIAL SETUP: [ There is a COUPON for FREE installation in the box!!! I wanted to create a setup that I can move between vehicles, so I chose to do my own install so I ignored the coupon. You will certainly want to let the BB Geeks do this if it’s in your everyday vehicle.] I’m not sure I’ve seen a product based on new software and multiple applications that is so well thought out. And I DIDN’T read the instructions through most of this. I set up my device by plugging it into its USB wall plug, connecting to my WIFI and connecting to my phone’s Bluetooth. 5 minutes. The rest needed to be accomplished in the car. That didn’t mean I couldn’t play with the various apps. The Rand McNally applications pop up in front of the basic Android apps. Messaging, Phone Access, Navigation, Camera(s), Monitoring and Entertainment take up the 6 part grid. I have the 7” screen and it is an ideal size for most vehicles. I played with the camera App first. Under this selection you can choose to use the tablet as a DASH CAM, or as a COLLISION WARNING SYSTEM, or as a standard CAMERA. It’s all pretty intuitive. Typical Android SWIPES, touch sensitive ICONS, and a few surface mounted BUTTONS handle everything.
Beneath the nifty Car Apps, there is a nice Android (5.1) Tablet with 32Gb storage, front and rear cameras, and added microSD storage slot.
IN THE CAR: I’m ready to install my mount in the car and see how this all works. Other than the Setup instructions which are in a simple brochure and also on the tablet, there doesn’t seem to be a more thorough description of the Apps. I’d prefer having a comprehensive USER GUIDE. Yeah, I saw the advertising overviews but I’m just a bit more obsessive than average and I’m not so familiar with Android devices. Oh well, let’s se how intuitive this is.
Plugged into AUX and plugged into Power and set it on the dash of my Genesis using the INCLUDED beanbag/clamshell mount. [The Bean Bag Pad shows separately for $29, so it may be an extra.] It’s all a bit imposing sitting on the dash. I suppose it doesn’t interfere with my view more than what Audi and others do with their NAV units mounted on a dash, but it might interfere with the view of shorter drivers or those with equally high dashes. The entire device is hefty, and I wouldn’t want to be hit with it. I haven’t tried the glass mount but it looks up to the task.
The Tablet to mount interface earns special attention. Once the mount is attached to your car (permanent, beanbag, or windshield) the tablet MAGNETICALLY attaches to the mount. Easily, Reliably, No Fuss, and it can be quickly grabbed . . . leaving all mounting hardware behind . . . and stuffed in a jacket or purse. If you drive around with a co-pilot, this is a great feature so they can use some Apps or adjust settings while it’s in their lap and not have to strain against a seatbelt. Wife loved this.
The DASH CAM. I love the idea of the Dash Camera so I got that working immediately. Really sharp video . . . it captured a late summer dragonfly skimming near my hood and everything was sharp across a wide field of view. Nice videos. (The really responsive SUPPORT LINE informed me that the videos can be downloaded to a computer for editing. I was surprised to discover limited control via Android, so I called.) Next up, I wondered if I could simultaneously use the camera in Collision Avoidance mode. Nope. The camera will not go into another mode until you bail out of the current mode. That’s OK for me but you might feel differently.
NAVIGATION. This was all fairly standard, but I did have to be patient for the first few uses. It may be using a buffer to store initial locations because it started slow. I’m not sure why it didn’t list local Supermarkets when I searched, but it got most other places of interest. The NAV voice appears over the FM station I used, and it was loud enough. I need to look at the settings.
PHONE App. This is important to me so I tested voice quality and ease of access. The contact list takes up the right half of the screen and is easy to scroll and select. Once you select the contact, an easy-to-see and select phone button appears and initiates dialing. Voice quality was judged fine by the test recipient. I liked the way the phone operates in much the same way as it does on cars where it is built in. It took disconnecting my Bluetooth and reconnecting to get my initial contact downloads, but it works now. It beats grabbing for a phone out of my pocket.
MESSAGING: I don’t ever TEXT Message. But, I test drove the OverDryve and discovered how easy this is. Because I have an iPhone, the device uses SIRI for texting. Really, really simple. I used the same contact list but I pressed the MICROPHONE ICON and SIRI pops up asking what to write. It’s just sitting there ready and waiting from one press. This has got to be safer that the silliness I see on the roads around me with head down, car weaving, and imminent danger for the rest of us. Very impressive.
Having MUSIC stored on my phone readily accessible without added wires was great. Sound quality was good but not better than a straight AUX into my radio.
I don’t have the service monitoring Dongle or the Tire Pressure accessory ($149), but others might find those especially useful — for an added price. There is also a WIRELESS BACKUP CAMERA available for $130. I have one already, and couldn't live without it.
CONCLUSION: I’m not sure there is a similar device on the market. You can, of course, order up electronics packages in most cars, with prices varying from $600 to more than $2000, but you get what they want to give you, not necessarily what you want. Some popular vehicles have no navigation at any price, none have a Dash Cam, and when all else is considered, this is a tablet that you can bring with you while vacationing, or at school, or for activities in the home.
Apparently, Rand McNally has a full array of products for truckers, including tablets and dash cams. While average consumers may view them as the new kids, this product proves that they are quite capable with these tools and may teach the traditional players a thing or two. For me, this device is a bargain and it adds safety and technology features to an entry level vehicle (or used car, rental, recreational vehicle or fixer-upper.) I liked it and I’m going to keep it.

Fully featured laptop will tempt tablet shoppers
on June 29, 2016
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
from Austin
Acer - Aspire R 15 2-in-1 15.6 Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive
What am I reviewing? An Acer Aspire R 15 R5-571T-59DC - Flip design - Core i5 6200U / 2.3 GHz - Win 10 Home 64-bit - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD - no ODD - 15.6 IPS touchscreen 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) - HD Graphics 520 - 802.11ac - steel gray. Useful features beyond those in the above description: Glossy Screen; Weighs 4.5 lbs.; 4 USB Ports (3 are 3.0); HDMI out; built-in SD media reader; built-in Dual-Band Wireless; back-lit keyboard; headphone/microphone combo-jack; web-cam with mics.
[Confession: I’m mostly a Mac Person. Yeah. I like my computing easy, minimal drama, and compatible with my other tech tools. Considering my personal bias, this review could be a bit unfair to the Acer, but you decide if it is.]
Summary: I rather enjoyed this nicely featured 2-in-1 laptop. It does nifty tricks that make computing fun. I’ve included some pictures to illustrate some of these features. I love the dual nature of the Acer. If you use a tablet a lot, you sometimes find yourself reaching over to tap a video PLAY button, or to drag a table across the screen. Son-of-a-gun, but, it actually works on the Acer laptop. Or, on those occasions when I want to set the computer where a vertical table can be displayed . . . vertically, it’s easy enough to accomplish. In fact, the Acer Aspire has a full suite of tablet features that allow you to rotate it fully while keeping a properly oriented screen image. The pop-up keyboard substitutes for the real keyboard when that is useful, or drag it out of the way. A simple test of finger drawing on the screen was successful. This Acer Aspire is not as light as a simple tablet, but it will run circles around them all with its computing capability.

This laptop has a very bright, very colorful, highly detailed screen that invites long-term use. The high gloss screen finish may influence your setup, ‘cause it’s reflective. But, I’m drawn to the crisp and colorful images for my photo editing and simply orient the screen away from windows. I’m not equipped to test speed, but everything snapped open, scrolled without hesitation, or presented videos as expected. Opening multiple screens had no impact on performance for this music playing, photo editing, spreadsheet making, email and web browser user. The Acer laptop computer was always stable and unperturbed by my demands Photo or music collectors are probably going to want to add a DVD/CD player, but they’re cheap. Sure, Acer could have included a DVD player, but why? You’re not getting software that way anymore and much of your music and movies are also downloaded. You’re not going to need to buy an SD reader (included), and you’re not going to run out of input ports, with such an impressive number included. You won’t need to add a keyboard. I love the way the back-lit keyboard comes awake as soon as I touch it, and it has a nice typist’s feel. And, it has a full sized number pad, on the right where you’d look for it. In fact, the entire computer has an extremely high quality feel and finish — it seems like it’s carved out of a block of aluminum. It comes across as a premium piece of technology in every way. Very nice computer that appears to offer quite a lot of value.
Other stuff: I didn’t test battery life, because I leave my laptops plugged in. I’m not a heavy-duty game player, so you’ll need to read other reviews for some other observations about game support. One annoyance: the power button sticks out on the right side, making it easy to shut down the laptop if you try setting it on that side for vertical display (a rather rare occurrence). The plug sticks out of the left side meaning you’ll be unplugging it to set it on that side. (again. probably a rare occurrence).
This is a very nice computer that appears to offer quite a lot of value. I can’t imagine not checking out the Acer Aspire R15 at the store if you really need a full featured laptop but are also tempted by tablets.

If your measuring value, it's a winner

Acer Iconia One- 10.1” Tablet 32GB
There are several ways to evaluate the Acer tablet.
You can simply compare the Acer Iconia One 10.1” to the competition. Easy enough, because it’s obvious that for a lot less money than the expensive brands you get somewhat less [memory= 1GB RAM, 32GB ROM, 1.3GHZ CPU Speed, resolution= (1280 x 800), and it’s a bit heavier). Battery usage is dependent on the interaction of too many settings (brightness? Bluetooth? media type? volume?) to be useful in a review. The Acer Iconia One has a headphone jack, a micro-USB port, power, speakers and volume control. A micro-USB charging cable/plug are in the box. It has a front (2Mp) and a back (5Mp) camera. I found it to be nicely colorful and bright enough for my purpose. Do we learn anything from this exercise? A little.
You could instead do the value calculation. There s very little you can’t do with the Acer Iconia One, and it costs a lot less than the competition. It represents quite a value: colorful, fully featured, the very flexible Android operating system, a huge library of Apps, expandable storage, a great viewing size, and a lot of money left over for add-ons or music or Apps or photo prints.
I loaded this tablet with my favorite Apps: a variety of tools for my hobbies. For little more than the cost of a single specialist tool, I now have a dedicated tablet for (a) theater remote using the Harmony App) along with a sound pressure meter for calibration; and/or (b) a complete, searchable inventory of my movies and music; and/or (c) a network analyzing tool using a Wi-Fi App and a cell tower signal strength App; and/or (d) a weather monitoring App with persistent radar, updated regional weather reports, etc.; and/or (e) a home monitoring App that allows instant viewing of my 4 security cameras; and/or (f)-(z) Apps that manage limitless food menus or assist in staying on top of my investments or provide access to my local library for books and magazines or store my games. At the price of the Acer it’s easy to imagine having a few tablets for the kitchen, the game room, the family room and the bedroom.
The Acer has one issue that proved more irritating than disruptive. It protests too much. Yes, the Acer is persistent in warning that it has low memory. This never seemed to stop or even slow down my activities. I even went into the useful System Doctor where you can optimize memory usage. The Doctor App indicates that memory has been freed up, but the message pops up again, inevitably. It’s in the separate Settings App that you can manage where Apps are stored (device memory storage or add-on SD card). This had no influence on device memory, but you can sure add a large number of Apps. Just be sure to close unused ones, regularly.
I’m pleasantly surprised by how useful this Acer tablet is. I may be looking for another one (or more) to permanently mount in my home.

Do you have a need for speed?

LINKSYS EA9500 MAX-STREAM™ AC5400 TRI-BAND WI-FI ROUTER
The AC5400 is advertised as tri-band because it distributes the data load on the 5Ghz band between the two 5Ghz radios and adds a 2.4GHz radio for devices using this band. If you have a mix of 5Ghz n and ac devices, the router will separate them on to different radios so the "n" devices and "ac" devices don’t interfere with each other.
Please keep in mind that my network and connected equipment situation is unique and may not match your desired network. The AC5400 works flawlessly after a somewhat tedious setup to create a roaming (Bridged) network. I have an Apple Time Capsule primary router and prefer to create a roaming network with the Linksys AC5400. Linksys is improving its instructions by adding videos and instructions for less typical configurations. However, more effort is needed. Videos and written narratives don’t always match forcing novices like me to reset the router and start over when outcomes don’t match expectations. (My roaming network initially appeared as twin networks requiring logging in to actually “roam”.) The wonderful Smart WiFi management software gets diluted significantly in Bridge mode. Take notes as you do your setup so you can understand problems if they occur.
I have no way of testing the advertised speeds. I can acknowledge that watching UHD programming while streaming videos on my tablet as my wife sends menus to the printer all occur without anyone complaining. I can also note that my 100Mbps TWC service (sometimes up to 110Mbps) is fully available at every location, without regard to distance in my 2800sf home. I suspect that this router is designed for far more demanding activities in large office environments.
I don’t believe I’m a heavy user. The devices I connect to my network include:
- 2 Amazon Fire streaming devices
- 2 smart phones (WiFi)
- 4 tablets all on WiFI
- 4 wireless cameras (WiFI)
- 3 DVR's using LAN connects
- 4 TV's (all with streaming apps using wireless and LAN, 2 with UHD)
- connected projector using LAN
- 4 Blu Ray players (all with various streaming apps using wireless and LAN)
- 2 AVR systems (using wireless)
- 2 laptops (both wireless)
- 2 LAN printers
- a steady stream of visitors using WiFi
- an Apple Time Capsule / Router
Every Wi-Fi device connected reliably to my router, located in my Master Closet for these tests. This is the worst (most distant and most intervening walls) location in my home. The router receives Internet Access from an Ethernet connection using PowerLine adapters connected to my primary router.

Prevent dead zones around your home with the help of this Linksys Wi-Fi range extender. It works with all types of Wi-Fi routers, and it uses multi-user MIMO for speed and efficiency. This Linksys Wi-Fi range extender can be used to create a different access point or to extend the field of the router’s connection.

Truly Plug-n-play network enhancement
on May 11, 2016

Linksys MaxStream RE7000-AC1900 Wall Plug In Range Extender with MU-MIMO
It’s hard to find truly plug-n-play networking accessories that are genuine improvements to my network. This Range extender is such a product: very straightforward to setup and use. And I chose the somewhat more complicated (not really) browser-based method of setup. (The easier approach is the WPS — push a button — method.)
The device can be set-up as either a WIRELESS or WIRED extender. The former may reduce the wireless signal while the latter provides maximum signal but requires either a lengthy cable from your primary router or a set of PowerLine adapters. I use the latter usually, but I was so impressed with the wireless effectiveness that I saved some time and effort and simply went wireless. A quick speed test showed that I’m now getting 85-90% of my Internet Access on my back patio where I once found myself twisting and turning to get the better signal. That is no longer necessary.
Complaints: Linksys needs more work on instructions. Teasing references to “Spot Finder Technology” will have you searching for apps for your phone, software from Linksys, or some link to more information. Spot Finder is really a feature already integral to the device and it magically appears after you’ve done the setup. Very confusing, I suppose it's reassuring to see that I'm configured correctly but it's a late arrival to the party. Actually using the Extender Setup instructions left me wanting a bit more guidance. Real screen-shots would be real nice. This might just be me — I only play with networks once or twice a year and prefer a bit of hand-holding.
This is the type of device I recommend to friends and family who are not technically proficient. It's hard for them to get into trouble that I can't get them out of.

Using the Linksys EA7500 to add a base station
on February 4, 2016
Posted by: TECHBEENGOOD
from Austin
Using the Linksys EA7500 to add a base station in a roaming network.
The Linksys EA7500 is an experiment for me. My 2800 sqft home, all on 1 floor, has a wide variation of Wi-Fi speeds in its rooms. My Internet Access is TWC 100Mbps which I distribute using an Apple Router/Time Capsule via wireless and Powerline 1200 devices as well as the Airport Express which I swapped out for the Linksys. I realize MY RESULTS WILL DIFFER from anyone else’s results. Don’t draw too many conclusions from this review. I offer it as one example of how this device can be used.
SUMMARY and IMPORTANT ISSUES: I’ve compared the throughput of the Linksys EA7500 placed in several locations in my home. I’ve compared it to the measured speed of my WiFi signal achieved vs. a 2-year old Apple Router/Time Capsule and an Airport Express. In tests passing Wi-Fi through as many as 1-3 walls I achieved 100Mbps total speed (down/upload) representing 100% of the TWC promised access speed. The Linksys was unperturbed by anything in my home. Neither Apple device achieved similar speeds and they varied between 60-90% of the TWC IA speeds. The older Apple devices were slowed down by walls and other obstructions/reflections/distance.
SETUP: Setup for the Linksys could be easier, and the instructions should be more complete regarding the various configurations in which it can be used. I found the link between my computer and the Linksys administrative interface to be occasionally flaky and I had to switch between web browsers and/or reset the router a few times. That said, the online support documents are rather extensive. I’m a real network novice. And my setup was very unusual, requiring a manual procedure. Like I said, my situation is unique. I immersed myself for a solid two days to accomplish this setup and I probably won’t revisit my network for another year or two. Others do this every day.
DETAILS for those who are interested:
I’m using the Linksys EA7500 as an (ethernet connected) 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFI base station and have connected it using its bridge mode. This creates a roaming network. I initially set up the Linksys with a different password, WPA2 security, and a unique network name. In this configuration, I had to manually select a wireless network that had been created on those devices that I want pointed at the Linksys. This is not my preferred setup so I then made changes so that I could get true roaming. The online support documents were pretty complete. The Linksys appears not to allow access to the router administrative pages once bridge mode has been selected. I needed to reset the device to reconfigure it’s name and password to match my original network/password if I want the roaming to occur without my intervention. The Ethernet connection is actually accomplished using Powerline 1200 devices. The results suggest they had virtually no influence on speed.

Large capacity, useful and COLD.
By TECHBEENGOOD from AUSTIN
My experience has been quite good. This was a purely indulgent purchase. We come from a generation when you never want to run out of food or miss an opportunity during store food specials. This LG ends those fears. It simply soaks up frozen and refigerated foods. We love the open cabinet space and various door and specialty spaces.
I've placed calibrated thermometers in multiple locations in the frdge. It took almost 3 days for the temps to settle down, but now they are within a 4 degree range of the settings. (The LG does NOT show the temp, ONLY the settings. You must use your own thermometer.) The door space in my unit is only a couple of degrees higher, and only during periods of use. The drawers are usually colder than the open space of the fridge. My situation may be unique.
The low noise level is especially welcome. We loved our previous Maytag, but this is another level of quiet. We wondered about the extra depth, but the approx. 2" are not an issue for us. Tighter kitchens may present a problem.
I also called customer service with LG during the 1st 48 hours to understand why the fridge was taking so long to reach the settings. There is a language issue. The pleasant person on the phone struggled with anything other than the simplest presentation of facts, had no appreciation for humor, and was fairly quick to over-react to criticism. Her attachment to the script was frustrating. Most importantly, telling a customer that it's perfectly fine and normal for the temp setting to be 37 and the actual temp to be 42 is wrong. She did not understand that the "setting" is NOT the actual temperature. She then fussed around and helped me cycle through the demo/operational settings which may or may not have helped. The temperature did settle in another 24 hours nad has been perfect for weeks. Customer service needs some work..
I should also add that this purchase was originally made at another long-time national retailer who utterly failed to complete the delivery due to incompetence. Best Buy/Pacific handled sale and delivery with wonderful professionalism.

Edit of review: about that freezer middle drawer
October 5, 2014
I would probably lower the score by 1/2 star after several months of use. You may feel differently. . . . That cute middle slide drawer in the freezer needs a redesign. It occasionally pops out of its track with very little effort. It does not pop back in quite so easily. We've not yet figured out what we've done wrong but with unusual caution and we can avoid the problem. Busier families with kids will not be so fortunate. It'll be an aggravation.

Google (runs my) Home
By TECHBEENGOOD
Google Home
“Hey, Google . . . play “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young” and so it was done. Google Home used the Pandora account I just entered, and a rather smooth, well balanced music playback began. It could get loud without harshness out of a cute beer-mug sized device. Without any other command, Pandora was now playing. Seemed like magic to my visitors who were listening in to my conversation with Google Home while I was setting it up.
Set up took less than 10 minutes, but I don’t have many of the partner products (NEST, Philips Hue, SmartThings, IF) that Google Home operates with right out of the box. But Google Home has a nice bag of tricks with which to work. With the right Chromecast enabled speakers, you can apparently get the house rocking relying on Pandora, Spotify, Google Play, Youtube Music, or Tunein to provide the tunes.
Both my wife an I are getting a kick out of challenging Google to provide weather reports, news updates, or filling in our grocery list (using Google Keep). It’ll do a very accurate job of answering trivia questions and has no trouble deciphering our voice commands. It could provide the names of local restaurants and addresses, but couldn’t schedule a table for us. It could list where movies were playing, but not when. Google Home easily picked out our voices over a playing TV and was quick to respond. It wasn’t ready with TV schedules, however . . yet.
For me, the real excitement begins if/when Google operates my Logitech Harmony Theater system hubs, my HomeBrite Devices, or maybe lets us order from some online stores. I have no trouble recommending the Google Home device, but I’m also expecting ti to expand its partner list. These are wonderfully useful gadgets, but they rely on Google to play nicely with a variety of other products that I want to control.

Have you got "multiple" networks? Read.
December 7, 2016
I discovered an aggravation in recent days with my Google Home. if you've set up a roaming or extended network in your home, there is a potential problem. (Others with a simple, single router, network can stop reading.) At some point, typically after moving your Google Home or manually quitting then restarting WiFI, you may discover Google Home can't connect to your network. Huh? You've got it extended everywhere in your house and you have a problem ONLY with Google Home? Seems silly. Well, Google Home wants to see your original setup device (phone/tablet) on the same BRANCH of your network. Anything else creates a crisis. Start over, be sure to find the Google device with your setup App on your phone/tablet, and re-establish the connection. Be patient, it will reconnect.

Roomba, you're hired.
By TECHBEENGOOD from Austin
I WILL volunteer to vacuum. Of course, I haven’t developed my wife’s skills or strategies for coping with our home’s diverse floor landscape. All those transitions to wood, tile, various carpet types and back again, through a forest of chair legs, blind hallways, low hanging sofas, beds and chairs, and scattered debris, most of it mine. I’m a work in progress. Which brings us to this iRobot Roomba 890. Kudos to the teams of skilled designers, engineers, of focus groups who built and tested a robot that so successfully accomplishes that which has confounded me for so many years. My wife, our specialist, will have the final judgment on the Roomba.
Setup requires a minimal amount of planning. The Roomba’s charging station needs to be located where the Roomba can find it, be plugged in and docked. At this point, after a few hours to fully charge, you have a working automated, intelligent vacuum. Hate technology? Don’t need it. Press the CLEAN button (x2) whenever you’re ready to vacuum. For me, it’s as I’m heading out the door. And I love technology, just not vacuuming tech. Most others will want to take advantage of the Roomba’s ability to schedule vacuuming sessions, get notifications, and monitor cleaning cycles from the app. Once it’s on your home Wi-Fi, a connected Roomba will work with Amazon’s Alexa.
I’m not going to detail the Wi-Fi connection process. It’s not that it’s lengthy but it requires your close attention to details. My efforts required some restarts, but then, I’m notorious for trying everything first with minimal scanning of the instructions. Don’t try that with the Roomba. Also, you may be jolted by the “unsecured network message” (on the iPhone), but that only indicates a temporary setup condition while configuring the nearby Roomba. Roomba’s online support provides easy-to-follow help if you get into trouble. Don’t be reluctant to reset or restart, as this solved all my issues.
How does this Roomba 890 work? Navigation is effective, as it deals with obstacles, drops, rises, and transitions without problems. Watching the Roomba negotiate my tangle of wires, sneak under our low sofas (low even for our manual upright), and easily climb over our various throw and area carpets is impressive. In places we were sure it would get stuck, it either solved the predicament or avoided it. The combination of sensors, thoughtfully designed rollers and spinners, and logic makes these Roombas special. Oh, and it is surprisingly quiet. We didn’t have to adjust the TV volume, even as it maneuvered around our chairs. At just shy of 90 minutes it found its way back to the charging dock.
My wife’s evaluation? She’s quite willing to leave our home in the tireless, relentless, fastidious care of our new robotic housecleaner. The iRobot Roomba 890 is pretty competent. I think you know my feelings.

I checked again
August 1, 2017
Well, now you've got me wondering if I was sloppy in my review. So, I ran another test today, several weeks after my initial posting. I set my Roomba off on its task by double-clicking the CLEAN button. Set my stopwatch . . . and . . . you can almost set a clock by my Roomba. On my iPhone I got 1:29:10.25 (89 minutes) of vacuuming. Yes, I have 85% hardwood floors (with several large oriental rugs), tile in the bathrooms, and the remainder in a carpeted bedroom. And I do hear the motor working a bit harder on carpet. Your experience will certainly differ, but I'm confident you'll get well past an hour.

What is the sound decible? I have sensory issues and your BC vacuums tend to be extremely loud

Sound level for our vacuums is a pet peeve of mine, so I make it a point of measuring. With my uncalibrated iPhone App I measure my house on a typical day at 44dB. We're quiet. This vac kicks the noise up to 75-77dB from a yard or two away. The pitch, overall, is not too bad, except for a bit lower volume, higher frequency sound I find annoying. This isn't a quiet vac. Ask the BB store support to fire one up for you. I should note that various vacs of the same model might have differing volumes and pitches.

Cut down on cooking time with this Bella Pro air fryer oven dehydrator. Top and bottom heating elements ensure exceptional cooking results, while the 10.5-quart capacity holds plenty of food. This Bella Pro air fryer oven dehydrator features a touch-screen control panel for quick operation, two nonstick racks for crisping and one pan for baking convenience.

Does the drip pan go underneath the heating element or above?

The instructions on Page 5 of the instructions (item 17) say to only place the drip pan on the oven floor, under the heating elements. This is in direct conflict with the diagram on page 8, where the drip tray is drawn so that it is clearly on the first pair of guides (runners) ABOVE the heating elements, and not on the oven floor. The fact is, it will not sit on my upper guides. It only rests on the oven floor.

Can you use Swiffer Dry and Wet Jet Pads on this like the Braava 300?

The m6 appears to sense the unique hole pattern on the mounting plate of each pad type to identify the dry or wet pads and perform tasks accordingly. If I'm correct, it seems unlikely that a generic pad will work properly.

We have a pretty big open floor plan and own a roomba i series that empties itself. The only thing holding me back on purchasing the mop is if there is a mechanism where it goes back to its station and can refill with water or does it stop when out?
