Very simple to set up for presentations, and other

This projector can be set up just like any monitor. Plug in the power, connect a computer (HDMI or VGA) and you're good to go.
The settings on the body of the projector are very easy to adjust, allowing you to correct for showing on a bias (not directly at the screen/wall), and adjusting focus and size. If you dig a little deeper, you can make other adjustments to colors, connections, etc. in the menu.
One nice feature is that there are built-in speakers. They are fairly hollow sounding, but it is a nice inclusion. It does appear to work well for video, however, so if you want to use this as a TV, you'll just have to change the settings on your computer to send audio to a different output (if you're using an HDMI connection).
Since I've just received this, I haven't had a lot of experience with it yet, but I think it will work well for hosting bar trivia games (my ultimate idea in getting it).

Add music to your day with this portable Sony speaker. Its Live Sound mode broadcasts sound waves in a wider arc for a true concert experience, and the Extra Bass setting deepens the low notes. This water-resistant Sony speaker has flashing lights that sync with the beat to create a party atmosphere wherever you go.

Excellent sound, with plenty of settings
on March 13, 2018

I'm using this speaker to replace an iHome iBT90 as my main desk speaker. Lets run through different aspects...
Sound: The most important feature. The Sony sounds amazing. I've never heard such a full sound coming out of a portable speaker. The iHome is fairly anemic in comparison.
Appearance: The Sony has a very stylish and classic look to it. The entire body is wrapped in the textured speaker fabric which should take a beating fairly well without showing it. I don't know how it would deal with sand (as shown on the box), but I also can't imagine taking something this nice and just dropping it on the beach. No cheap-looking plastic and overwhelming light-displays.
Lights: There are LEDs which provide color and strobe-like flashing. Thankfully, if you install the Sony Music Center app, you can control these lights, as the flashing gets rather annoying. Once you have control, you can set it to follow the music in different ways, or just cycle through warm colors, cool colors, and other settings.
Speaker-phone: This doesn't seem to work terribly well as a speaker phone. I've tried it on multiple calls. One person indicated that the sound was hollow, and slightly difficult to hear. The other had such a hard time hearing me that I had to switch back to the headset.
Audio settings: Out of the box, the Sony has an impressive bass sound. This is fantastic for music, but you can also change this setting, and even adjust a 3-band EQ through the app. This is a life-saver if you listen to a lot of podcasts (where excessive bass makes everything sound very odd).
Battery: I've been using this for about 8 hours, and the battery rating is still around 50%. I'm not blasting it since I'm indoors, but this is very nice.
Summary: While they're marketing this as a party-speaker (which it definitely has the output for), this speaker looks at home on a desk as well. It is easy to use, and the settings are relatively simple to access through the app.
I have had one issue where it suddenly cut out, but disconnecting and reconnecting the bluetooth resolved the issue.

Good for music, less so for phone
on March 6, 2018

from Arlington, VA
In general, I'd say that these are very nice headphones. I'll go through the general points of my thinking.
Audio quality: These headphones have very nice sound. I'd say they're very close to the Sony MX1000, and a little less bass than classic Bose over-ear headphones.
Noise cancelling: This is where I feel the need to take away a star. The normal noise cancelling is nice. It isn't as comprehensive as the Sony headphones. However, if you're familiar with noise-cancelling headphones, you'll know that you tend to feel some pressure on your ears while cancelling is turned on. Since these cancel about half as much sound as the Sony, they also apply about half of the usual pressure. My girlfriend can't wear the Sony headphones, but these may work for her.
The point where I need to take away a star is the difference between using these headphones for music, and using them as a headset. You can't turn off the noise-cancelling, and the programming doesn't work the same way for a phone call. Rather than blocking out sounds during a call, it blocks the background noise for the people on the other end. However, you hear everything. When my girlfriend ran water in the sink about 10 feet away, I felt like my head might as well be in the sink for how the sound seemed to right in my ears.
Appearance: I'm a big fan of the classic styling of these headphones. The leather is nice, the ear-cups are comfortable, and they look much better than the standard plastic blocks of most headphones today.
Controls: After using the Sony headphones for a year, which has a touch-sensitive side for controlling (standard swiping gestures), the physical button on these seems like a step back, and a bit more difficult to use. It definitely takes some getting used to, to know what the headphones will register as a press of the button. Here is a general guide:
1 press - play/pause or answer/hang-up
2 press - skip forward
3 press - skip back
There are also functions for fast-forward and rewind, but I haven't bothered with them, as my patience has run out for figuring out exactly how to use all of the controls, and I'm satisfied with just the above.
Overall, I'd say that these are a good pair of headphones, and if you don't like the usual pressure of noise-cancelling headphones, they are a good alternative to the top-end headphones.

Nice for a budget laptop
on February 5, 2018
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
This is my first experience with a Chromebook, and also my first experience with a budget laptop in about 5 years. The main thing that I've noticed is how little has changed.
Display: the 15.6" panel is reasonable. It's a little odd on a Chromebook, but I suppose it meets a need. The main problem that I have is the 1366x768 resolution. This is the same as budget notebooks from 5 years ago, and the display may actually be worse. If there is bright light in the room,or if you are looking at even a slightly downward angle, the display looks a bit washed out. If you are looking slightly upward relative to the display, the colors quickly start to shift. The same goes from side-to-side. You have perhaps less than 30 degrees of visibility.
The display is also matte, so you won't see reflections, but have a greater tendency to have a haze falling over the image. The brightness is acceptable. In a room with indirect natural light, full brightness will suffice to see the image, if not very clearly (a combination of the low resolution and narrow viewing angles).
Keyboard: this is a reasonable keyboard. The keys don't travel very far, but the board itself seems sturdy (doesn't flex just when typing). It would have been nice to have a number-pad, but that would have cut out all room for the speakers.
Speakers: middling at best. They tend to be very tinny, without any low end, and not very loud. Definitely not what you would usually expect given the real-estate they take up in the body of the computer.
Battery: this is where all of the compromises are supposed to pay off. I was streaming HD video at full brightness and full volume (which is only reasonable volume, not blowing you away) for about 7 hours and still had a reported 2 hours or so remaining. This will definitely last all day.
Chrome: This is an odd OS. After always using Windows, it feels like baby's-first-computer software. There are very few settings to see. You sign in and everything is through the web browser. Even "programs" with their own icons are actually just shortcuts to web pages. The most recent update allows you to use Android Apps, which is a definite plus. Now you can at least use actual productivity software rather than the free on-line versions of Word and Excel.
If you have need of a limited purpose computer for basic productivity, and perhaps streaming videos, this is a reasonable computer. If you're looking for actual productivity software, enough power for most gaming, or doing anything else specialized, you'll need to look elsewhere. Good machine for basic educational uses.

Smaller head required...
on January 17, 2018
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
I realize that my head is slightly larger than average, but I cannot wear these headphones for more than 10 minutes or so without them starting to hurt my head. If I extend the earphones as far as possible, I can just barely get them onto my ears.
Sound Quality: the bass tends to be a little hollow sounding, but otherwise the sound replication is good. However, these are meant to be used for exercise. Every footfall while walking seemed like a bass-kick through the earphones. I guess these could be good for weight-lifting, but I wouldn't bother for any manner of running or high-movement athletics.
Design: other than the aforementioned issue with the length the ear-cups can extend, these are well designed for athletics. The materials seem to repel water/sweat well, and they feel like they should be durable. Also, they even considered the athletic nature of the design in the carrying bag they included, which is a mesh design to allow for ventilation (much like many athletic bags for your clothing).
Other: bluetooth pairing was very easy. You turn it on, find it in your phone's menu, and hit pair. Done. The controls on the ear-cup are nice, but a bit limited. You can play/pause, skip forward and back, and control volume. The main controls (play/pause, forward, back) are on a highly rubberized panel on the ear-cup, making it very easy to feel and hit when your hands are sweaty.
Overall, these could be good if they fit your head. If you have a larger than average head, look elsewhere.

Additional screws needed to install, but good
on December 15, 2017
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
This is a great and highly adjustable light. The brushed metal is very modern looking.
Installing: You need to have some additional screws to mount the light, so be sure to open and disassemble the light and see what you'll need before going to a hardware store (this is like most overhead lights, but if you're new to buying this type of lighting, it isn't unusual). The instructions could be clearer, but you should be able to figure it out.
The light provided can be tailored to the time of day or space that you are in. The quality of the light can range from a heavy blue-light for waking up, to a more mellow yellow for relaxing. It can also be dimmed as needed.
If you turn off the light-switch rather than using the app, you'll need to adjust the light again when you turn it back on. I understand that this can be avoided by using one of the Philips smart switches, but that I do not have.
The amount of light generated is good, but not overpowering. If you have very high ceilings or plan on this being the primary light source in a larger room, you may be disappointed. But if you are in a smaller area of the kitchen or an office, you'll have no problem.
Standard point to note: you need to have a Philips Bridge to connect any of these smart-lights to. I have read that this also works with a particular model of the Amazon Alexa devices, but cannot confirm.

If the early 90's had bluetooth and smartphones...
on December 9, 2017
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
This watch is definitely something of a throwback to the early 90's. It is priced like a tech-focused watch of the era, and has a display to match.
Appearance: This looks like a throwback to the 90's. The body is thick black plastic which feels fairly cheap. The band is similarly cheap-feeling plastic. At least it won't have an issue with sweat. The screen is a fairly basic display of large black plastic with a simple white-ish back-lighting that comes on when you move your wrist.
Battery: The battery lasted for about 3 days between charges.
Features: You are supposed to be able to customize the display through the app, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do this. I don't know if this is because of the watch, the app being in an early version, or whatever the case may be. The app also appears to have settings for notifications, but I wasn't able to get any notifications to show up. Not for email, text, calls, anything.
You can start tracking walking/running or treadmill activity through the watch by navigating with the buttons around the sides of the watch.
I'm inclined to say that there is no need for this watch. If you're tracking short work--outs, you can track all of this with your smartphone, which you need to carry with you anyway for the watch to track things. The only way that I could see wanting this watch is if you're going on full-day treks where you aren't going to have your phone accessible. If you're going on long treks, you probably aren't tracking steps though...
Side-note: I find it very strange that Seiko Epson is releasing this line of watches under the Epson brand rather than the Seiko name (which is actually known for making watches).

Nicely comparable to the Vitamix
on December 1, 2017
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
I appreciate the simplicity of this blender. The last couple that I've tried have been the "bullet" style blenders, both from Magic Bullet and Ninja. Both of these come with a mass of jars to use, different attachments, which generally sit around taking up about 3 cu.ft. of space with rarely being used. This is just what you need. The blender base, the blades, and the jar. It also looks really nice!
The only real difference between this and a Vitamix (which I've used as well) is the missing plunger to push things toward the blades. If you use the right amount of liquid, you don't need that. Also, it's nice not to need to clean it.
The controls are very simple and intuitive, and I really appreciate the warning lights. If the blender just stops, it's nice to know if it is overheated, or something more serious.
The pre-set settings for different foods seem to work well (though I haven't tried all of them as yet). I really appreciate this over the bullet style blenders, however, as there is no rubber gasket to randomly get sucked up into the drink. Whenever this happened with the others, the drink is ruined and the blender is unusable until you get a replacement gasket (assuming you can find one; my Ninja has been unusable for months).
Simple to use and clean. Time will tell with the durability, but I'm pleased thus far.

Cute branding, modest performance
on November 15, 2017
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
I've had a Roomba 595 for a couple of years, and decided to try some of the new models when it started to die. I've had that, the Shark, and now this Rogue.
Performance: I think this robot suffers from the same problem as the Shark, in that the filter it uses is too fine. After running, there tends to be very little in the bin, and the filter is completely filled. I think the problem is that the filter gets full and the vacuum runs with almost no suction.
Tech advancements: I appreciate that you can use your phone to program and start the robot, which allows you to keep it under a chair or elsewhere that you don't want to reach under all the time.
Another nice feature is the use of optical sensors rather than physical. The Roomba just rams into things, the Shark taps them a bit, but the Hoover just glides along less than a centimeter away from walls, tables, or any other obstacle.
The map it makes during it's first run may not be great, and it may take multiple tries to get a full run around your space. On my first try, the Hoover completely missed a room (meaning it wouldn't find it when running because it missed the door and thought a wall was there). Once it has a semblance of a map, you can track it's progress or set up virtual walls for it to skip over areas, which is nice.
All in all, I think I'd stick with Roomba. While these new touches are nice, ultimately what matters is being able to clean the carpet, and none of the new models that I've tried actually function as well as a vacuum.

A strict upgrade over the Roomba 595
on October 24, 2017
Posted by: MurphyR
from Arlington, VA
I've had a Roomba 595 (pet edition) for the past few years, and recently needed to replace the battery, brushes, and filters.
Despite all of these parts being new, the Shark runs longer, quieter, and cleans better. The Shark seems to be better in every way with respect to cleaning.
The main difference between the devices is that Roomba can be scheduled directly on the vacuum itself. With the Shark, you have an added small remote to set the schedule. This is a small remote, which I fear can be lost rather easily. However, if you have a couch or end-table with enough clearance, you could set the Shark's dock underneath and out of sight. This is a minor trade-off, but something to think about if you are organized enough to keep track of the remote, and have a place to keep the Shark out of sight when not in use.
In total, the Shark is very similar to my older Roomba, but seems better at cleaning. Using a remote to program it is a minor difference which does allow for a wider variety of dock-placement options.

Feel the beat with this LG PK3 portable Bluetooth speaker. It provides dynamic sound and rich bass thanks to its Meridian Audio technology, so you can bring the party with you. The IPX-7 water resistance lets you go anywhere, rain or shine. This LG PK3 portable Bluetooth speaker keeps the music going for up to 12 hours per charge.

I want to use this as a speaker on my TV. Will it work for this purpose if I leave it plugged into a wall outlet for power all the time?

This speaker pairs wtih BlueTooth, or has a standard size line in (1/8 inch, just like any headphone jack). So, if your TV has BlueTooth or a headphone-out jack, it can connect to a TV.

Does each earbud have controls? Can both sides be used independently of each other, or can only one side be used independently, or must they always be used as a pair?

Each side has different controls (volume on left, play/pause on right).

You can connect the right side alone. This may be possible with the left, but I haven't tested it.

If the walkman has bluetooth, you should be able to connect. You can also use a wired connection and still turn on the headphones for noise-cancelling.

With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Can it use the same SSID as my TWC modem?

Yes, in the set-up for the extender, you can tell it to clone the settings from the home network, which, according to the instructions, will copy the SSID.

green light is blinking, curser moves staticly

It sounds like it is having a hard time maintaining the connection to the receiver. Try having the receiver plugged in as close to the mouse as possible (I have a USB hub built in to my keyboard, which works perfectly). When I plug the receiver in to the back of the computer (less than 3 feet away), the connection becomes choppy and the pointer will skip around on the screen quite a bit.
