Great Sport-based Headphones with Clunky App
on June 4, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Having tested a bunch of different Sony-based speakers recently, I firmly believe that they've figured out their speaker game.
Gone are the days of Sony being a cheap brand that cannot produce quality sound. This is transmitted to their newest sport headphones, with them having good overall sound quality, solid connection, and fine NC.
The design is pretty straightforward, and the headphones sit snug in the year. There are three sizes of plugs and two different ear pockets as well. The only drawback to the packaging is that there's no case to hold the headphones in. Considering this is almost a standard, I found it quite shocking.
Pairing up the headphones to two different phones was easy, although having to download yet another app to control them with (EQ, Bluetooth quality, etc) gets annoying. I found the app also had some issues which stayed persistent throughout my week with them.
As for performance, the headphones sound pretty good, giving a warm tone to most music tracks. The extra bass functionality can be nice, but also can be turned off if not wanted. The only real performance hiccup is the noise canceling feature. It works okay for my tastes, but most of it is ambient noise canceling, so it won't help much with sound on plane rides, etc. Battery can be a bit of an issue as I only found a seven hour average across the week I've had them, but this was with NC on all the time which would drain the battery quicker.
That all said, during my runs in 75 degree weather, I never had an issue of comfort, nor did the headphones fall out of my ears. This is key for me and any sport headphones, as I primarily use them for this purpose.
Overall, the complete package is a solid offering into sport headphones. The sound and build qualities are great, with no connection issues. NC could be better, along with the application used and battery life, but these are a solid product nonetheless.
Recommended.

Not Too Impressed by this Premium Soundbar
on May 2, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This is really 2.5 stars.
Let me start this off by saying, while not an audiophile, I care about how things sound. I've been through enough different sound types in my life to figure out what sounds good, overall, and think I have some judgement in the matter. I also believe Sony makes excellent sound products, from their standalone speakers, to their headphones. I'm a Sony believer.
But the Sony HT-X9000F soundbar did not do it for me.
It provided excellent sound and bass for music based applications, but when turned on for TV and movie based content, fell quite short in my opinion.
Let's start off with the good. The soundbar and wireless subwoofer look and feel quality. Right when you pick the box up, the weight is there.
The soundbar itself looks good with any TV, and is specifically made for the Sony line of TV's, pairing well, aesthetically, with their lineup.
In terms of setup, this thing might be the easiest product I've setup in a while. Plug in two HDMI ports, and then your done. The instructions make it very easy to not miss a step. Once it's hooked up you can plug in the wireless sub. If all goes well (and it should) it will just connect instantly to the soundbar, no issues. Mine did and that was great.
Once all setup, I was pumped to take this baby for a spin.
Now, coming from a full 5.1 speaker setup in my living room, I wasn't expecting it to sound as good as that. Of course, it didn't. But I found that, even when compared to other soundbars, the coveted vertical sound mode didn't do justice to any content out there, and the Cinema mode fell quite short.
Overall, the sound was too high, and muffled. The mid-range areas, to me, were basically non-existent. This means that the overall warmness and life-like nature of the sound won't be apparent. Everything sounded "tingy", like the highs were turned way up. Voices were often muffled by other sounds, especially with Vertical Sound mode enabled.
I was fully ready to accept Vertical Sound, but it did not sound good to me. I could hear it working, at times, with certain effects zooming overhead watching Star Wars:VII, or on Netflix with Dolby Atmos in Altered Carbon. The sound was trying to be immersive, but never drew me in.
Even though it is capable of producing the simulated 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound profiles, I didn't feel they added much, if anything, to the soundbar itself. The sound felt more real, as sound could be heard around you, but it wasn't good enough to truly buy into, at least for me.
The bright side of the sound was the music mode and subwoofer. Sony got those completely right. The sub packs a punch, and really produces some good low notes. Music seemed very balanced throughout, and gave a certain richness that wasn't found with any of the other modes with any other content.
So, overall I really wasn't blown away. While I never had any issues with software or hardware not working, such as the 4K HDR pass-through, stuff not pairing, etc., the overall sound quality was diminishing. I believe that the upgraded version, the Z9F, could probably sound better because it is a 3.1 system vs the 2.1 found here. It was easy to use, and displayed settings on the TV, which was nice, but the aforementioned gripes really hold it back in my opinion. The fact that you can't add the wireless rear speakers like the Z9F also, to me, take the rating down.
To me, this soundbar misses the mark. I wanted to love it, but couldn't bring myself to do it.

Almost Perfect Mid-Level Gaming Laptop
on April 28, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This Asus GU501 ROG Laptop is the one you want. It's got everything a gamer needs, and then some. It strikes a nice balance between elegance and gaming oriented, where style is concerned. It's got enough power to push through for the next couple of years. It's thin, and doesn't weigh much. The only overall drawbacks here are battery life, no G-SYNC tech, and big bezel. Like I said, almost perfect, but still five stars.
For starters, this laptop is honestly a looker. Featuring only one big chrome logo (that lights up red) on top of a brushed aluminum case, it looks good. Like, really good. The full laptop is aluminum, save for the bottom of the case (for cooling reasons), and features a nice gold accent trip along the outer shell.
The keyboard features four zone lighting areas, and all are RGB, meaning colors can be changed or turned off. It houses a full sized keyboard, that feel pretty good for the most part. Actuation is good, and typing was better than on my wife's chiclet MacBook Pro 2015. The only real non-looker areas here are the screen's bezel. On the sizes, it's about 3/4 inch thick, while on top measures in around a full inch. I understand why it's there (just due to the full size keyboard), but still could be distracting for some.
The screen itself is a solid, 120hz IPS anti-glare, which I really like. It loses some of the shine that glossy screens provide with color content, but overall is better for strictly gaming. I found the screen to be goo
Moving on, let's talk internals, because this is a gaming laptop. Featuring Intel's 8th gen hex (6) Core i7 processor, this thing is a beast. That's all that needs to be mentioned there. The RAM is adequate at 16 GB, but can easily be upgraded within the second DIMM slot. The SSD and 1TB HDD were sufficient enough, although my sleep boot times were a little wonky-every time I would open my laptop, the booting would take longer than expected to happen.
Of course, the backbone of this system is the full-size NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 6GB. It handles games great, and can play pretty much any games at 1080p 60FPS+. Realistically, this can do it all, and you won't have issues with games. Older games like BF4 can easily do 100+FPS. and that's perfect performance here. You know what you're getting with a 1080p screen and a GTX 1060.
All this said, the only things that really drag the system down are the overall battery life, fan speed and noise, and the lack of G-SYNC tech in the screen. The battery life, for me after 6 days of use, hovered around 3 hours, not gaming, unplugged. When gaming, I could hit around 1hr50min unplugged. This isn't terrible, but man it can be a drag. The power brick is bigger, and weighs about 1 lb itself, making it hard to cut the cord, so to speak.
When under any heavy loads (or even just random times) the fans really crank the speed and noise up. This isn't an issue for me, especially when using headphones, but it could be for some. Knowing that going in is essential. Lastly, no G-SYNC (as the higher end models of this computer have) is a minus, but not a killer downgrade. There are far more expensive machines that don't have the same tech, so no biggie.
All in all, I was truly impressed with this laptop. Asus did a very nice job of bringing sophistication and sharp, gaming roots into one computer. Everything works like it should, wrapped up in a lighter (5.5 lbs) and thinner (.78in thick) package than a 15.6" system could do. This has my approval, and is almost on par with my desktop at home now. Would definitely recommend.

A Great Gaming, Content Desktop, with a Big Price
on April 11, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Let's get this out of the way: this computer is a beast. It looks great, can handle pretty much anything you throw at it, and it's all in a package that's mid-tower size. The ONLY drawback (and it is a big one) is the upfront cost. It also looks like BB somehow upped the price to $1599 instead of $1499, so factor that into the decision. All in all though, this computer is rigged up for the now and the future, with the only real upgrade needed is the RAM (for content creators out there.)
As it stands, out of the box it's a heavy tower (at about 30lbs), but the size will make you believe it's lighter. Coming with the Intel Optane drive, some may think it's just a gimmick but I found startup and sleep resume speeds to be really good. The 1TB HD is small, but easily up-gradable.
Inside the tower itself you have small room to work with, though I doubt you'll need it. It does have an extra 3.5" slot out of the gate, as well as other bays, for upgrading the storage ASAP.
Cable management is good, and the everything is kept very tight due to an innovative swinging arm to hold the PSU in to place inside. Everything is accessible, and I've already thrown in another 16GB of RAM to bump the total to 32GB (using Adobe After Effects with only 16GB is slightly limiting.)
Moving on to the big hardware, the new i7 8th gen processors are powerful. Unless you're really keen on OC your machine (really, you won't need to with this as Turbo Boost can push it to over 4GHz), the 8700 will handle pretty much anything you throw at it without hesitating. The liquid cooling also keeps temps down over long periods, and the whole tower is SILENT; quietest computer I've ever owned and it's not even close.
The GTX 1070 is a stock, OEM MSI Aero design, meaning that it doesn't have green glowing NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX on it, and doesn't look as cool, but performs better overall and runs quieter. The GTX 1070 will be able to run most games at 1440p 50fps+, which is perfect for my tastes. Most I've thrown at it (Kingdom Come Deliverance, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Metro series, etc) all handle at 55fps on very high. Essentially, the GPU will bottleneck the processor here, not the other way around. There is room in the case to throw in another card if needed.
The stock keyboard and mouse and pretty bad, but more than likely those will already be on your wish list of immediate upgrades.
Overall, a really good prebuilt machine. Sure, it's a little bit spendy, and in that case watch for the sales. The AlienFX lights look great, and they're not overbearing. This handled everything I threw at it, without fail, and I've been benchmarking it for the past two weeks to make sure nothing was failing/money was worth it. If you're looking to get into PC gaming, or heavy content creation, this is a perfect way to do it. Alienware and Dell hit this new Aurora out of the park. Find it on sale and you're good to go.

Totally Awesome Portable Speaker
on March 25, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Sony is killing it with this new XB speaker line. These are amazing speakers: look great, have solid sound, get very loud, can be combined together, are IP67x rated, beautiful lighting effects, and just all around a stellar product.
To start out, they look great. I got the "red", and while it's more maroon-y than the photos make it look, I love it. The fabric is supposedly an exclusive print made in Japan for Sony, so the quality is there. Waterproofing is great, and I had no issues when testing it out (am always skeptical about that IP rating.) Also, the lighting effects, controlled via an app by Sony, are really neat, and are bound to get people talking, whether you want them to or not, about the looks. At any rate, the speaker passed the initial looks area with flying colors.
Next up is the sound part: this is a Sony speaker, so know you're getting pretty good sound overall, with enough volume to fill big, open areas, along with a "Live Sound" feature, which changes the sound profile to a concert-like venue. The sound can be tweaked within the Sony Music App, but out of the box sounds good. Treble is a little week, but once tweaked the profile is good. Really no complaints here, and that's good considering the speaker is used for sound. Bass is good, if not too heavy at time, but the subs and size are relatively good for any area (in the bedroom or backyard.)
The last things are housekeeping: battery, lighting, features, etc. First off, the battery is pretty good. If you're rocking the lighting effects such as Strobe, the battery is going to drain faster than the claimed time, but still delivers an easy 16 hours average of sound, with lights at medium volume. The Sony Music App download may turn some people off, but it's a good addition to your music apps, and the features you can utilize (such as Party Chain, where you can link up multiple, up to a 100, XB speakers) are really cool, and appreciated.
There is a DJ like mode accessible via another app, Fiestable, but I doubt most people will use it. It did work and was fun for a few minutes, but nothing to exciting.
Bluetooth never was disconnected, and I could easily step 50 feet away from my speaker without and interference or dropping happening.
Overall, I was blown away at the speaker and what it could do. If you're looking for a new, do it all speaker with really good sound, this XB41 should be on the top of your list.

Meet the secure, tamper-proof smart lock from Nest and Yale. It’s keyless, so you can lock and unlock the door from anywhere with the Nest app.[1] Give people you trust a passcode instead of a key, and get alerts when they come and go. And lock the door with a tap. If you forget, the Nest x Yale Lock even reminds you.

Good for Nest Connected Homes, Average Alone
on March 22, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
The biggest caveat to this review is simple: if you have invested into more Nest devices, the Nest x Yale Smart Lock is perfect for your household. If this is your first smart lock, then you may want to look elsewhere, but it could be good if you're looking for more Nest devices.
First off, installation was easy. There are very helpful printed instructions to walk you through it, and as long as your door is bigger than 5.5" wide, then it will be compatible (no sliding doors, glass doors though.) It took me about 15 minutes to get everything up and setup, and confident in the install.
The lock uses 4 AA batteries, and claims that the lock will last one year, but I have yet to test this claim. The batteries are supposed to, when low, signal to the lock to turn red and give a verbal warning. If they reach critical low point, the lock will tell you that again. If they run out, there are 9V switches on the bottom to reopen if needed.
The functionality is pretty cool, but really is hinged on other Nest products. The lock doesn't connect to WiFi; rather, it connects to a Nest Connect part that connects to your WiFi. The functions run through the Nest app, which controls all of your Nest devices as well.
The app is your way of controlling the lock itself. It's the remote to remotely unlock the door, lock the door, or access your 20 stored passcodes others can obtain from you. This is good, but most other companies provide more codes to store for guests. You can set expiration dates as well, but this should be expected, and also get notifications when someone unlocks or locks the door. There is an autolock feature that's neat as well, locking the door automatically after five minutes.
So, overall, the Nest x Yale Smart Lock is a solid entry into the smart lock category. There aren't any touchscreen controls, no voice assist features yet, and code storage is somewhat sparse, but these aren't dealbreakers. If you're looking for a start of your own Nest home space, this would be a solid option to start out with.

Great Offering from Sony in NC Headphones
on March 22, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
I've used a lot of headphones in my lifetime, especially leading up to these, and I believe that the newest Sony noise canceling headphones present a great value for the price point.
The pairing process is a breeze, and during playback I never experienced choppiness or breaking of connection. Can expect the range to be around 30ft in between two or three walls; after that, the connection can become an issue.
The sound itself is really good, in my opinion, with classic Sony presenting their speaker chops for others to see. High highs, low lows, solid mid, and decent enough bass. No clarity loss either, so these deliver a good, all-around sound profile.
The noise canceling was very good, again for the price. Not perfect, as some may think NC can do it all, but that's not the case. Very good dealing with lower level tones, and ambient noise (airplane noise, etc.) is solid. Overall, a good, better than I've used for awhile, NC feature.
The headphones are very comfortable, and feel good over the course of a few hours. The battery, while rated at 24 hours, is when NC isn't enabled, and I've gotten about 10 hours of straight NC with these. This to me is a good battery life, and they take about 2 hours to fully charge, with quick use after 10 minutes (for 60 minutes of playback.)
At any rate, I'd definitely recommend these. Build design, price point, comfort, features, and connectivity highlight a very good wireless, NC headphone.

A Great Projector, Suitable for Any Business
on March 19, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This new Epson - Pro EX7260 projector is one of the better data-based projectors you can find on the market right now. Great video reproduction, bright, lightweight (5.5lbs), easy to setup, accurate colors, and included cables boast very good value.
PROS:
-The projector features a lightweight-enough design to be portable, and features wireless and QR code connectivity options to make connecting a breeze.
-Three-chip WXGA LCD-based, meaning no artifact or rainbow colors.
-Features multiple ports, such as HDMI, USB A/B, etc, so connecting different video outputs are doable.
-The projector gets very bright, and can easily be used in bright rooms with no issues.
-Videos are fine even in 720p.
-Comes with a soft case.
-Different modes for different uses, such as Eco or Presentation.
-Split screen features allows two sources outputting at once.
-Speaker built in, albeit mono audio.
-Relatively small profile.
-Text readable down to 8-point fonts even at small throw distances.
-33-320" screen size, from 3-30ft.
-Setup was easy.
-Comes with VGA, remote, batteries, USB and power cables.
CONS:
-Underwhelming speaker
-Limiting access when connected via MHL devices.
As you can see, the pros far outweigh the cons here, and truly this projector should be a go-to if looking to upgrade your business or office space. Highly recommended.

A Good Home Security System w/ Few Quirks
on March 16, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This is really a 4.5 star review.
Let me say that I had no prior experience with a home security system before this, but am so glad I now know that I need one in my life.
The SimpliSafe Shield is perfect for my needs. I'll break it down very quickly here:
PROS: the setup is very easy, and honestly packaged together in a way that is intuitive. It took about 15 minutes total for me to get my motion sensors, base, entry sensors, and PIN entry areas throughout my home. After that, navigating through the options made perfect sense, and setting up the different alarms, HOME and AWAY, to use different pieces of equipment was also easy. The security systems themselves seemed to pick up on everything they needed, and the full range of coverage seemed true to the claims. The chimes and voices were loud enough but not obnoxious, and everything worked. The equipment is really true plug and play, and the devices will walk you through with voice and text hints. The base has built in WiFi and Cellular capabilities, meaning if the WiFi goes out you're still covered based on cellular to contact someone. There are no contracts to sign, and the monthly subscription fee of $15 for Active Monitoring is very reasonable. The devices look nice and feel solid, and everything looks like it belongs in a modern home.
CONS: this list is short, but should matter to some depending on how you need your system. The SimpliSafe system is a proprietary hardware system, meaning you can't use their stuff with others', such as ADT, Arlo, etc. Also, while cheap, the monthly subscription is pretty much necessary for the system to actually do anything. As other reviewers have noted, the self-monitoring service (which is still paid) won't alert the authorities, and is still paid for. If you don't pay for any of the services then you simply have a device that will make noise and tell people when they're in your home.
Other than that though, I'd totally recommend this. The only reason for the 1-star deduction is due to the way the monitoring plans are setup, but everything else is great.

Awesome Speaker That Can Go Anywhere
on March 12, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Let's get this out of the way: this is probably one of the best outdoor, portable, and great sounding speakers you can buy at the $150 range. I'm not sure how Sony did it but the design and execution is pretty much spot on.
After using it extensively for different things, including music inside, outside, in water, in the sand, telephone calls, computer speakers, and a bedroom light/music box, it is great.
The speaker itself is not too bulky and has a pretty sleek design. I appreciated the rubber stoppers on the bottom of it to keep it from slipping. With a few buttons on the top to control the basics and a sealed panel on the back for more, there isn't much else to look at. Except for the lights, which you can change colors and do a pretty good job (remembering the price point) of syncing to the music that's playing.
The speaker is more useful with the Sony Music Center app, giving you full control of the speaker, lights, and its sound profile, all from the app. Connecting to my Bluetooth devices was a simple press of the button, and found it to pair quickly once turning it off. Battery life ran me about 20 hours straight, which a few different settings played with (higher volume, lights no lights, etc). This was good for me.
In all honesty the only complaint I have is about it's connection: sometimes I found the speaker to hold a very weak connection, dropping a second or two from a song even while my phone was right next to it. I'm chalking it up as something that may improve over time, but if that's the only issue and it's not widespread then it won't matter.
All in all, I really was impressed with this thing. We have two other portable speakers, starting with the letter U, and honestly think these sound better and are more protective from the elements.

How long does the battery last when not gaming and using the integrated graphics? Is the screen matted or glossy?

Screen is matte with Anti-Glare coating. My battery, after 6 days of use and use most of the time, averaged 3hr 5min when doing normal things. Hope this helps.
