Solid PC for 1080p Gaming + All Multimedia Work
on December 3, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This is really a 4.5 star review.
Overall, I'm happy with this HP desktop. It's got the power needed to handle many different multimedia applications and programs, decent enough storage options, and solid 1080p gaming. The only things that hold this back is size, as there are limited upgrade options should you ever choose to do so.
First off, this is a small computer. It's light at 15 or so pounds, and is almost half the size of a "gaming" full-size tower.
This is good if it's something you want, but keep in mind that a smaller case can make it harder to work inside, should you ever do so.
The real goodies of this bundle come from the AMD Ryzen processor, Samsung memory, and the Radeon RX GPU. This processor is all most people will ever need it, and can handle multimedia whenever needed. It also means that when gaming you won't find any bottlenecking happening due to the processor.
My unit featured standard Samsung memory (16GB) in the two DIMM slots. This is better than other manufacturers for onboard RAM.
The GPU is an OEM Radeon 580, which is perfect for most 1080p gaming. Keep in mind that the OEM doesn't look as flashy, perform as well (blower style fan), or have great cooling as aftermarket units, but that doesn't mean you can't use it. It's great for lighter games, and can push most games on medium or high in 1080p no problem.
The biggest cons are: PSU is lacking additional power, and smaller case makes getting to certain components like hard drive and SSD tougher. It should fit a full-size GPU, however, but the PSU probably won't be able to push it.
In the end, this is a recommended PC, provided you get it on sale. I wouldn't pay the standard MSRP, but for $700-800, you've got a solid machine for all types of work.

Solid Complimentary Vacuum for Smaller Places
on November 14, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Let me just say first, you cannot buy this vacuum to be your main clean-up machine. While it's great for its intended usage, the suction isn't powerful enough, nor is it big enough, to handle a full workload. That said, I've been using this off and on for about 10 days and it's a great lightweight companion vacuum.
The first thing you’ll notice about this Shark is that it’s light. Overall, the vacuum is easy to maneuver with one hand, and it’s no big deal to pick it up, too.
This Shark is one of the quietest vacuums I’ve ever used. Even with Ion Boost (turbo) engaged, it was pleasant to the ear. Speaking of pleasant, the advertised battery life is legit. I could routinely hit 38 minutes of usage with normal suction, or about 20 with Boost enabled.
Shark includes standard attachments.
There are a couple gripes that don’t make it perfect, however.
One of the first things I noticed is that the vacuum propels forward when you push it, which sounds great in theory (and can be for bigger rooms), but the technical aspect of moving around the small head between hard-to-get areas while fighting a self-propelling device get annoying.
Also, I found the best results with the Ion Boost suction mode was engaged. The vacuum picked up more and seemed to be better suited for pet hair and hard pieces of waste (like litter).
Lastly, while it doesn’t claim to, this vacuum doesn’t include any way of wall mounting it. You can purchase an adapter to do so, but something to note.
All that said, using this in conjunction with my upright, full-size vacuum is great. I can quickly grab the Shark for coffee spills, litter clean up, or an easy tidying before company. Again, I’d recommend this if you already have a powerful vacuum, or if you don’t have any pets and live in a smaller space.

Great Smartwatch, Not-so-great Packaging
on October 31, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This MK smartwatch is among the classiest-looking smartwatches around. Google Wear is snappy as the operating system, and notifications work well. Changing the look was smooth, and everything is intuitive one you understand how the touch screen controls work.
The biggest issue with this watch is that MK doesn't include anyway of adjusting the size on board. Maybe that is the standard way, but since the stainless steel chains have to be removed via a special jewelry tool, I felt it necessary that the company include one.
I found the health and heart rate monitoring systems to be fairly accurate, and using it for work outs was easy enough, though slightly heavy.
Even paired with an iPhone, Google Wear and this watch were able to sync and work well. The only issue is you can't utilize replying to emails or messages, but more than likely you're not buying this watch if you have an Apple device.
The only other item worth mentioning is battery life.
This is crucial for any smartwatch, and while the packaging claims 24-hours of use, I found that to be inflated. It can last all day, yes, but with normal wear and use, it was dead by the end.
Overall, the watch is great. It's very stylish, snappy to the touch, has a solid screen, and feels like a premium device. The only two drawbacks are the sluggish battery life, and no inclusion of a way to adjust the size from the start. I feel that's a pretty significant problem, as reflected by the rating.

A Good Baby Monitor that Could Be Improved
on October 19, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Overall, Panasonic delivers a solid, well-built baby monitor with a good amount of features, but falls a little short with the night time video quality and smart features.
Let's start with the basics here. We've had the device for over a week and a half, and have used it in conjunction with another monitor we already have. The monitor and camera both look like baby devices, so they aren't winning any design awards. They function well, and we never experienced any drops in connection.
Setup was pretty straightforward, and the buttons on the device all were fairly intuitive too. Plug the camera in, and turn on the monitor and you're good to go. The camera is big, and shaped like a robot, but works and the movement features are stellar.
Day time use is good, with the camera displaying a crisp and colorful image. The screen shows you via notifications if it detects noise or movement, and how hard those are, making it a nice visible queue.
I found the battery life to be good too, as we repeatedly found our monitor getting over 5-hours of use (Panasonic claims 5-hours).
There are smart features such as auto-lullaby, which will play a song whenever it detects noise, along with a built-in timer for noise, but we'll touch on those later.
I really only have a couple gripes, but the do end up costing the monitor one star.
Unfortunately, the video quality during night mode is not that great, in my opinion. Is it serviceable? Yes, for sure. But it's not great, and is very apparent when you zoom in (X2) with the camera. We have a cheaper monitor, and it's night time feed is noticeably better, even though day time it's no match.
I mentioned smart features, and while they sound good in theory, they're not completely thought out. You can turn on the auto lullaby feature, but it's only good for when sound is detecting, not movement. For our baby, who moves quite a bit and then makes noise, it would be good if the software could be applied to movement as well.
Lastly, the monitor-to-camera connection, once powered on, takes a solid 15-seconds or so. This isn't a huge deal, but again our other monitor hits the mark in 5-seconds. As a parent, you know those seconds can matter.
That all said, it's a solid monitor overall. We still use it as our main monitor now, even with its shortcomings.

Great NC Headphone, Super Comfy and Sounds Great!
on September 23, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Sony's latest premium NC headphones has to be one of the best pairs on the market.
They have everything you would want in a high-end device: great construction quality, very good canceling capabilities, comfy for hours, and look great. Overall, there's not much to dislike here.
First up is the packaging and design. Sony did a great job here with a nice carrying case, and the headphones look great with their metal accents.
Next up is the sound quality. Sony headphones are generally decent sound quality, but the XM3 really ups that bar. The stage is warmer than some might like, but the lows are deep and mids solid. Bass is tight, and the EQ is customizable with an app that features a lot of options. I'd prefer that the sound quality is good, and it is.
Speaking of the app, Sony's Headphones app takes some getting used to, but once you've poked around there's a lot of features there to unlock and make the headphones your own.
The XM3 supports Google Assistant, which is a great feature. Speaking of controlling the headphones, all of the buttons are replaced with touch features on the right earcup to control your playback options. These take some acquainting, but after you understand how to turn the volume up and down they work very well.
The NC is great, and there are three modes to help you in different situations. Speaking of NC, you'll be happy to know that these are very comfy for long sessions. I was out doing yardwork in them for three-hours one day and never felt any discomfort.
That all said, the only things that may concern some people are the need for the app, and possibly the price.
Yet, they don't outweigh the good and great pieces that go into the XM3, which altogether create one of the best, if not the best, NC headphones around.

Favorite Gaming Headset I've Ever Used
on August 7, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This Plantronics PC gaming headset is stellar. Truly, and even coming in with high hopes the 800HD still performs every-bit like the premium accessory it is.
To start out, the build quality feels great and the headset looks sleek. Nothing appears like it's going to fall apart anytime soon, and the black with gold accents color scheme works perfectly. My only gripe here is that the overall design doesn't looks as clean as other headsets. Rather, it's a little busy which may turn some people off of it.
On to the actual performance though. The 800HD delivers Dolby Atmos for Headphones in 7.1 form, and while it's not anywhere close to "true" Dolby Atmos, the full surround sound object-based software works very well. When playing Gears of War 4, for example, the immersion was more so than when playing on my Xbox One X with standard 5.1 surround sound. The sound is great, and the big drivers help deliver adequate bass without overusing it.
On the status of comfort, I never once experienced any discomfort when using the headset for prolonged periods of time. The cuffs are very plushy, while the top strap that holds everything together fits snug and is adjustable.
I've yet to experience a drop or lag in audio, and that's with playing some form of music, games, or editing videos over the course of 11 days now. The wireless adapter seems to have a great range, as I can wear my headset across my entire apartment (950 sq. ft.) without losing a note.
The only drawbacks this headset has are these: no software, no carrying case, and you might be shipped an already used Dolby Atmos code. No software can also be a game changer for some, as many people prefer to tweak their settings on their own. Instead, there are EQ settings on the bottom of the headset, as well as a total volume controlling to control the noise if you need to have a conversation with someone outside of the digital world.
Carrying case wise, this is a nitpick. I prefer a higher-end device give me the protection I need right away to keep it safe. It may be hard to find a csae that will fit the headset, so having that from the start could be nice.
Lastly, I had the craziest issue with my headset: the Dolby Atmos code was already used upon arrival. Calmly, I contacted Plantronics support and after one day of waiting, and then providing information they requested, they gave me another code. It was an easy process, and one that eased the pain.
Seriously though, overall this is one great headset. The mic sounds nice, everything is adjustable, the comfort level is off the charts, and the sound plus wireless prefer up to their price tag. Good job Plantronics, this is how you do a headset.

A Decent Diaper Bag that Could Be Improved
on July 24, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This is really a 3.5 star review.
As far as diaper bags go, this one is decent. Has tons of pockets, plenty deep enough, hidden pocket for your own goods, and is water resistant. The issues, though, are that the main pouch isn't convenient to access, handles and carry straps aren't padded, and the craftsmanship leaves some to be desired.
The bag itself is good size, and should fit most items you'd want inside. It's a good color and looks nice. The water resistant stood up to drips and splashes and there are inside slips for bottles, all of which is good.
The biggest issues, though, come from craftsmanship. The included changing pad's velcro is already coming undone, and we've only used it twice.
The zippers to access the main compartment only zip down 1/3ish of the way. This means it's difficult to find items you need asap that are buried at the bottom. The handles aren't really padded, so if carrying it around for long periods on your back or with your hand it might get uncomfortable.
That said, it's a pretty solid bag for less than $50. I'd recommend it for any price under $35-40.

Perfect Addition to Any HT w/out Ceiling Speakers
on July 12, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Let me start out by saying that, yes, it Dolby Atmos is best experienced with normal, in-ceiling speakers. When that isn't possible, though, the next best thing are elevated, upward-firing speakers. The Sony SSCSE, or Core Series Elevated speakers, match the excellent quality of the whole Core line, and look good doing it.
To set these up, they're made ideally to sit on top of floor-standing speakers, but if you don't have those in your setup the can be wall-mounted and include the hardware to do so. They're heavier than they look, at about 17 pounds each.
After plugging in and letting your receiver do the rest, you're setup to a great cinema experience. The two movies I watched this past weekend, Saving Private Ryan and Blade Runner 2049, both in 4K, highlight what Atmos brings to the sound. After the opening beach scene from SPR, you'll never want to go back to old audio formats again. The bullets were whizzing around the room in areas I never thought I'd hear, and the immersive experience is nothing short of spectacular.
Quality seems high overall, and they go perfectly with my Sony CS floor-standing (CS3) speakers. The also look better with the grills off, in my opinion.
My only gripes are that, like the other Core series speakers, there isn't anyway of using banana plugs, or any plugs, on the speaker wire to attach on the back. Also, while they do their job, anyone with less than a 12-foot long room may not see the best out of these, as they really work wonders on bigger rooms due to the inflection points.
All in all, these are a great introductory pair of Atmos for anyone on a budget, looking to up their audio game. Recommended.

Really Solid AIO from Lenovo
on July 3, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
Lenovo, the world's biggest PC maker, has done it again with their latest AIO. It's sleek, looks good, and performs like a charm. Only downside is the only FULL-HD screen, but for everything else it's perfect.
The newest Intel Core i7 processor is installed, allowing great power to back up the machine. The 1TB hard drive is enough for most, but keep in mind it will be hard to upgrade if size is an issue. The standard 8GB of RAM is sufficient.
The included mouse and keyboard is suited more towards minimalist nature than function, but will be fine for anything other than long periods of time during use.
For me, I'm using this as a second computer, that is plugged into our kitchen counter. We have a few thousand photos on it and use it as a digital photo frame, due to the touch screen.
Since the only cord you plug in is the slim power cord, there isn't much else needed to get it working out of the box. Setup is easy.
Overall, I'm very happy with the performance so far. There's enough power here to decode and encode audio and video, along with your standard photoshop use. I'm pleased with this, to say the least!
Recommended to anyone who wants a modern design, or to the family like us who want a second computer in the house when needed.

Amazing Receiver, Loads of Options
on June 27, 2018
Posted by: DarthNeyehilus
from Seattle, WA
This is by far the best receiver I've ever used. There are tons of features, and while intimidating at first, the sound quality and options provide stellar value.
This is my first Yamaha receiver, whereas generally I'd stick to Denon or Marantz. No reason why, just preference. After dabbling with this AVR, I'll reconsider who to buy next time around.
It looks great, and isn't super intrusive. Not as heavy as my older Denon, which is a plus. Standard size for an AVR. Hookups in the back accommodate banana plugs if you have them setup.
The 630w output is plenty enough for most setup, primarily with my 5.1.2 Atmos setup. Switching between different audio types is easy and the initial setup is a breeze with the mic included.
It's fully loaded and can pass through all the new video standards, such as 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, etc, all with no issues.
Bluetooth and Spotify streaming was awesome, and being able to wireless connect to my home network and control the music from my computer or phone was seamless.
The overall sound stage was slightly warmer, and more detailed than my older system, outputting significantly more power per speaker. I was shocked after the first hookup and test.
The only cons I ever experienced was when streaming HBO GO on my Xbox One X, there were some audio hiccups. I attribute it to the receiver being set to pass through Atmos audio rather than traditional 5.1.
Also, I've yet to figure out how to dim the display. A very minor issue, but some could find it too bright.
Overall, this was an impressive AVR. Fully loaded and midrange receiver for the lower-end enthusiasts like myself out there. It has all the standard audio types, including newer DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, and is future proof video wise. Highly recommended.
