Great Xbox One games or Series X archive
on July 24, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary: A great little hard drive to expand your storage options while looking cool! Easy to use, set up and stylish.
Pros:
Looks awesome!
Easy to set up
No external power needed
Compact
Stays cool, little heat
Cons:
Not an SSD, stuck as mechanical hard drive speeds
Not good for games that need SSD speeds
Unboxing:
The unit comes in a compact package. Inside you will find the hard drive, a USB 3.2 connector (USB A to USB Micro B), some documentation (including a Xbox game pass trial).
Installation:
After plugging it into a Xbox One Series X, the prompt to format the hard drive appears and asks if you want to make it the primary installation drive. I kept it as a secondary but it was nice to get the prompt.
Use:
Using the drive is very straightforward, after it is set up, any use is mainly in the background if it is the primary device. If it is your secondary hard drive, you might need to manage your storage on the Xbox to move games back and forth as needed. I recommend using older games on the external hard drives and using newer games on the internal SSD since it is faster.
The external hard drive is rated for 130 MB/s which is greatly different from the internal drive at 2.4 GB/s (uncompressed) so if you are looking to fast load times and more modern games that require faster data streaming this might pose an issue. Some Xbox One Series X games might require an SSD so be aware. If you are looking to hold older Xbox One games or have a place to move games back and forth (archive) so you don’t need to redownload, this is a great solution.
The drive has a solid metallic build and looks like it will last. There is a white indicator light for hard drive activity that is very bright. The two tone finish which is mostly black with white accents looks very cool.

Versatile camera with good quality
on June 23, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary:
Good for most people. Not a jack of all trades. Great video and audio quality. Compatible with Intel devices only (no formal M1 Mac support).
Unboxing:
The unboxing is barebones. There is the device, USB-C or A attachments and documentation.
Set up:
I first tried it on my M1 Mac Mini. The device installed and worked after downloading the J5 app from the app store. I was able to see the camera, but it looked a little poor in quality. I looked at the website and saw there is no M1 Mac support with the drivers. If you have an Intel Mac, you are GTG.
I then tried it on my Asus laptop via USB-C. Drivers installed instantly and the software from the website worked as expected.
Software:
The J5 companion app is basic. It allows for basic color/contrast/exposure correction but not much else. You can click on a camera on the left side to make it work with other apps. I would have liked some control over resolution or focus here.
Use:
Used as a webcam for video calls, pictures were clear and voice from the microphones were clear on the other side (tested by recording a voice sample). The device hands well from a laptop lid or on the desk if you prop it up on its stand. I really liked there is a tripod attachment on the bottom of the unit for anyone who might use such things. The unit does not just adjust up and down but also swivels left and right.
What I did not like is the software isn't very smart. Focus is very hit or miss with many feeds appearing blurry. If there is lots of contrast the whites often got blown out. In most settings this was not an issue for me, but it can be for some.
For travel this unit is compact enough to be carried in a bag and feels sturdy for travel.
Overall a good job to J5, it could use some tweaking but is a nice camera overall.

Perfect for all coffee lovers!
on June 21, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary:
Just what I needed to complete my coffee bar! Using this for espresso-based drinks as well as drip coffee works like a charm!
Unboxing / first impressions:
There is not much in the box other than the unit, a cup with a lid, a cleaning brush, and instructions. The unit has some weight to it and feels high quality with high-end materials. I was impressed by the cover over the actual grinder as it is just big enough to fit beans into but too small to allow fingers or any other accidental objects to get in.
Usage:
The unit has settings from 1-11 which include from lowest to highest Prismo, cupping, AeroPress, Pour-Over, Electric Coffee Maker, French Press, and Cold Brew. I placed some beans into the grinder and started for an electric coffee maker. It worked very quickly and surprisingly quiet vs what I expected. The cup of grounds is about an American cup worth so you might need to do a few grinds to get what you need depending on how much you are brewing.
What I thought was cool is the cup has a magnetic spot on the bottom to perfectly align it with the grinder, it was a nice touch. The quality of the coffee was outstanding with the fresh beans. I also tried it out with espresso to make a latte, the grinds were extremely fine as expected, and nothing was missed. There is little cleanup after use since the grinds are likely to spread around the area as you are cleaning the unit or pouring them into your coffee apparatus.
I have nothing bad to say about this unit. Some might complain that it only grinds a small number of beans, but it is not that much of an issue to me since I just do it twice for my desired amount. Five out of five for me!

Great for kids school and games
on June 5, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Great for kids 8+. They are stylish, sound good enough (for kids) and allow for enough sound isolation/comfort to help with school work.
Pros:
Good style
Decent sound quality (for kids)
Volume limiting
Mic, pause play in-cord button
Durable
Cons:
Low volume (even with the switch off)
Cheap build
Unboxing:
There is not much inside the box. You will find the headphones and a warranty. My kid was very excited to try them since they look cool and look like “big kid” headphones, a big upgrade from his Pikachu headphones. They fit him perfectly and required zero setup due to this being the corded version.
Sound quality/comfort:
As an adult, I would not listen to music on these things. They are not bad but overall muted in the mids and highs. Bass is somewhat more pronounced but it feels like something is missing from the sound. For kids headphones, I would say they sound good though. There seemed to be more volume out of the right speaker compared to the left speaker, maybe some bad wiring/design, maybe it’s just my old ears. My kid won’t notice though.
There is a hidden switch in the right ear cup that will change the max volume from 85 db to 95 db. Listening to some music (a challenge since they are for smaller kid heads, not adult noggins), the headphones provided a decent seal and were fairly comfortable. I feel good with my child wearing these for extended periods of time as they will not hurt and not damage their hearing.
Durability:
The structure is sound. I do not fear them getting major damage if they are dropped. The body is lightweight and plastic and will scuff with falls but won’t break easily. The foam and pleather are average and will rip if handled poorly but this is no different from most headphones. The same goes for the top foam. The cable is braided and highly durable with a 90 degree 3.5mm jack.
Overall, this is a good pick for most children as they are durable, sound decent, provide little distraction, and are very comfortable for school or games.

Good for most
on April 28, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary: A good set of headphones if you have a need for wired and have a USB-C capable device.
Setup / unboxing: The package comes with the headphones, three sizes of ear buds, a small manual and warranty documentation. Being USB-C, they are plug and play. I tried them in my S21 Ultra, iPad Air and Asus Laptop, all worked first try with no setup.
Pros:
They can be used with any device with a USB-C connection. Sound quality is decent with good bass and clean sound. I did not find it amazing good for general listening in most environments. Sound isolation was good for me and there was a good seal with the included tips. The cord has enough slack to not worry about it getting snagged in use.
Cons: The tips took a little work before they would stay in my ear comfortably; once they were set they did not fall out and were comfortable. There is no included carrying case. The ear tips sizes might be all too big for smaller ears.
My job keeps me offline for days at a time so these will be good when I do not want to mess with wireless ear buds or charging devices. Their wide compatibility makes them very useful.

Well build and outstanding performance
on April 3, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary: A great high end and powerful blender that we use every day.
Build / design: This is a large blender, it takes up a decent amount of space on the counter so make sure you either have a permanent spot for it or good storage. This is likely due to the larger motor. It has a good amount of weight so it will not move while using. I liked how the base had suction cups to ensure it does not move when you place it down. The material is high quality plastic and it feels like it will last for a good amount of time without any scuffs. The lid for the container is secure in that it will not work unless you ensure it is properly attached.
The unit comes with a 1.32 oz cup, 1.20 oz travel cup, two to-go lids, one pitcher with integrated blade, one pitcher lid with spout, one easy-twist extractor blade, the motor base, a tamper, warranty card, user guide and a recipe book. The recipe book is very useful
Use: It is simple to use and is similar to most blenders. The touch screen is nice and provides presets such as smoothies, frozen drinks soups, purees and more. The presents have built in timers so they will be consistent when used. There is also a manual mode for more control. In my time with the product it has handled everything thrown at it including ice, peanut butters, frozen fruit with no issue and nothing getting stuck. You could make pretty much anything with this machine.
Cleaning: Disassembly is simple. I have hand washed all the parts but the manual says some parts may go in the dishwasher so I recommend you review that before washing.
Overall, the blender is great. It provides great value for what it can do and it will last many years.

Practical
on March 21, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary:
Overall a very practical device for anyone who could use some simple expansion to their home office setup or travels frequently. There are a few caveats to this unit but overall good for most people.
Pros:
-Compact
-Multiple USB ports
-VGA, Display port and HDMI
-High speed connections
-Ethernet
Cons
-Only one USB-C port
-No Thunderbolt support
-Flimsy build
-Short USB-C cable
Unboxing / setup:
This is a very small section as the unit and simple documentation are in the box. Setup is as simple as plugging it into your USB-C port on your laptop.
Use:
Initial impression was that it is very useful as the size makes it easy to pack and it works with pretty much everything as you will find an HDMI, VGA, Display port, USB-C, Ethernet and two USB-A 3.1 ports on the device. The connector to the PC is clever in that you twist the bottom of the unit and the cable unravels or winds up for storage. The rotation mechanism feels somewhat flimsy but it is unique and useful.
Testing out the ports, I was happy to see that the HDMI is version 2.0 so it supports 4k at 60hz. I found one problem when testing out the USB-C input though. I connected my SSD hard drive to the device using a thunderbolt 3 rated USB-C Cable. The connection to hard drive kept dropping in and out. I verified the cable is good with a direct connection to my PC so it appears if you are connecting anything that supports thunderbolt 3, you might have some issues with your connection. Everything else I connected to the USB-C port had no issues.
I also would have preferred a second USB-C port since if you are using the open USB-C port as a power connector pass through to your laptop, you no longer have a USB-C port available. This might matter to more than others as there are still USB-A 3.1 ports available.
I enjoy this device and it will help immensely during travel but it is probably best for anyone with a lot of older connections and doesn’t own a lot of USB-C devices yet.

Amazing sound quality and style
on March 6, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary:
This product is one of the “wow” products that shocks me how good it is. I only have one single hiccup in the review which once figured out solved all my issues. It works great, sounds amazing and looks cool in any room!
Pros:
• Style
• Sound quality
• Size
• Build quality
• Ease of use
• APT-X support
Cons:
• No included screws
• Requires PCM to work with HDMI (more in review)
Unboxing:
The box is fitted well to the device and includes essentials. The speaker, wooden stand pegs, wall mounting hardware (minus screws), remote with batteries and instructions.
Setup and use:
I first tested it with my phone (Android S21 Ultra so I could test bluetooth APT-X support). After plugging it in, putting batteries in the remote and pairing it with my phone, it was ready to go. I played “A Letter To Ashley” by Your Broken Hero and the Piano sounded crisp with great range across the board conveying all the good Emo vibes. I played with the wide and narrow sound settings which have their use cases. Wide sounds AMAZING for music and movies. Narrow is great for spoken word. Playing some EDM and classical I was impressed by the crispness and ability to fill a room. Vocals were clear, details were pronounced, and bass was above average (not room shaking).
My initial setup was in a computer nook, so it was somewhat far from a wall which is not ideal as most of the bass relies on the rear fired woofers to use the wall to amplify the sound. Even in this setup, it sounded good, just not amazing on the low end.
I then took it upstairs to use with my bedroom TV. I placed it closer to the wall and plugged it in via HDMI ARC. I did not get any sound. To see if the issue was the cable, I swapped it out to no avail. I then tried to use an optical cable with the same results. After digging into my TV settings, I changed “compressed audio” to “PCM” and it worked. So if you are expecting any compressed formats, Dolby, DTS or any other formats, you might have some issues depending on your TV. PCM worked great though so I switched back to HDMI and all was well.
Playing some movies on Netflix was outstanding as well. Action movies had wide stereo with room filling sound. Documentaries were better in the narrow mode with more emphasis on voice.
I have yet to wall mount the device on the wall as I need to get some anchors to better support the device as it weighs 8 lbs and I am in a rental unit, but you can mount it two ways; with a large nail hanging directly to the back of the unit or with the included leather straps which work with a smaller nail and looks very classy. For now, I am using the wooden pegs in the base of the unit which also look nice and are easily removable.
Documentation:
The device comes with a quick start guide which is mostly pictures of what needs to be done. If you lose it it can also be downloaded at their website. The guide better explains what each input symbol means as they use symbols more than words on the unit to label connections. The remote is clearly explained as well. Of most value is the mounting instructions which tells you what size scores you should use and how much clearance you would need for each option. It also explains options for routing cables if using wall mounted to better hide the cable.
It is overall a useful quick set-up guide but nothing extraordinary. I would like to see a specifications page as well so I could better understand the product upon opening.

Great and effective!
on March 6, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary:
These foam ear tips solve a problem in a very practical way. I’ll start with the issue. AirPods Pro fit me great when I first purchased them. Over time, the rubber ear tips lost their shape and did not hold too well in my ear. Small was too small, medium lost its shape and large was too large. The headphones still worked but I couldn’t get a proper seal any more.
So, what these solve… they consist of foam which expands into your ear canal and makes a perfect seal. There is texture in the foam to ensure it has a snug hold and does not fall out. It works great and they come in a three pack!
Unboxing:
Very plain and straightforward here. It is just a cardboard box with three sets of tips in them.
Setup:
Squeeze the old ear tips on your Airpods Pro to remove and install the new ones.
Use:
These create a better seal than the factory default ones, so sound isolation will be even better. This also includes transparency mode which still works well but is slightly more muted than before. It is hard to comment too much on audio quality as it does not fundamentally change the workings of the AirPods but it is still overall good. Base is a little more punchy due to the increased pressure in the ear with a better seal.
Working out is much better now as the foam tips keep them in your ear much better than the original ones. It is almost impossible to shake them out of my head.
I am curious how their durability is since they are a different material, but time will tell. If they fail, they are easily replaceable and come in a three pack so there are plenty of ready spares.
Comfort:
They feel very good once they are in your ear. When you first place them in your ear it is a little hard as you should squeeze them a bit to compress them as they quickly expand in your ear. Once the seal is made it is extremely comfortable.

Great for home or travel
on March 5, 2021
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary:
In my few days with this it appears to be a well-rounded toothbrush. It is not amazing for cleaning, but it is better than a manual toothbrush. It is also easy to use with great battery life. It is outstanding for home use or for travel and is a great purchase.
Pros:
- Portable
- Convenient
- Stylish
- Easy to use
- Long battery life (30 days)
- USB-C Rechargeable
Cons:
- Case is annoying
- Vibrations feel weak
Unboxing:
The box contains the toothbrush, a USB-A to USB-C cable and surprisingly, a lot of documentation for something so small.
Set up:
Pretty much none needed, peel off the bottom cover and charge with the USB-C cable. Install the brush on the base and get to brushing!
Use:
I used it for two days so far. My first impression is it looks cool and is easy to use with brushes that are quick and simple to change out. The brushes are expected to last three months or so like a normal toothbrush while the battery is expected to last 30 days. The light indicates pulses and changes color to amber when your battery runs low, so I recommend reviewing the instructions to know the meaning of the indicators.
Brushing is mostly like a regular toothbrush, but it adds a vibration for additional cleaning. The vibration feels somewhat weak so I am not fully sure how effective it is, but it cannot be worse than not having it. The brush will pulse in 30 second intervals to tell you when to change quadrants of your mouth. At the end of the two minutes, it will pulse three times to tell you it is done.
The back of the toothbrush has two little prongs (pictured) that will elevate the brush head when put on a counter so it doesn't have to touch the surface, a nice little detail.
The carrying case is great for travel as it mainly covers the top half of the toothbrush and feels secure. It has a rubbery plastic feel. Where I was annoyed is that the brush is kind of hard to get out of the case. It fits in there a little too well and there is nothing to get leverage on to pry it out when using. I got used to kind of prying it out from the bottom tip, but I have not found an easy way to get it out of the case each use. It is a minor gripe but worth noting since it is a review.

Game was not tested properly
By skullboy88 from Los Angeles, CA
First of all the reason for such a low rating is that the game is not playable. Right out the box. Now, I have been building pc's for over 10 years and have sunk hundreds of dollars into my rig to play the most demanding games. And I do. The problem is that ID software sent out a game to the public that is not finished. Google, rage graphics problems and you will find a magnitude of arcticles about poor graphics bad drivers and other issues. AMD and Nvidia have been working for a driver patch but reports from many say they do not work to fix the tearing and poor rendering . People are paying $60.00 for a pc game. Dont you think it should work right away without having to wait for a patch?

I had pair of Sony Headphones that I bought a few years ago for approx. $50 dollars... Sounded Amazing, but I recently ran then over with my car... Anyway bought these assuming the sound would be similar and also compensate for my only complaint with my other heardphones which was falling constantly out of my ear during workouts. Turns out these are more expensive but that sound terrible. Tried changing the setting on my IPOD and there is no overcoming the lack of bass. I am a auidiophile and I do listen to music a lot of double bass and drums so bass is something I must have in a headphone. If that's what you looking for don't buy these. I'm confident cheaper headphones with the same quality sound can be obtained so I would not recommend these to anyone...

Balanced Armature
June 28, 2012
Balanced Armature headphones are designed to sound like the original recording. Most headphones these days are "dynamic armature" which are designed kind of like a hardware equilizer where bass is usually most important. Any of these balanced armature headphones are aimed specifically at audiophiles as they repoduce very true to original sound with detailed mid ranges and highs.

Lenovo y500?

Ok so I was really looking forward to buying the lenovo ideapad y500 i5 version for $889.98. It said it was sold out but I wasn't worried, figuring it would be restocked in around a week. However, today I looked and it's been taken off the site. It's a shame because it was an amazing laptop, and I couldn't believe it was taken off. I was also wondering WHY it had been taken off. It seemed to make no sense. I would see if it had bad reviews and problems, but the lenovo had 2 ratings, both 5 star! I was very dissapointed and it looks like I'll have to go to TigerDirect and try to find it. If there's something I might not know, please tell me.
Thanks
Though I could not answer any specifics as the reasoning, I might be able to speculate. I have seen the Y series as very well configured for amazing prices in places. After reading reviews, a common trend mentioned of sub par build quality, most notably the touch pad would sink into the chassis. This would be enough to anger me after purchase. For the price, it might still be well worth it though.
