Outstanding charger for two devices
on September 10, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
This is one of the most practical wireless chargers I have come across yet. For background, my wife or I will usually charge our cell phone on a charger on the nightstand at night, the other person will charge theirs on a dresser on the other side of the room, usually whoever needs to wake up later in the morning. Well, this little device makes it easy for us both to charge at the same spot.
Pros:
• Looks great!
• Is compact
• Charges at a decent speed
• Doesn’t rely on an old micro-USB
• Large charging area
Cons:
• Not a fast charger
• Would prefer USB-C over the DC plug
Unboxing: There was not much in the box other than the device. The box provides enough detail to explain the obvious, 10W for both charging spots. It states a wide compatibility with Samsung Phones and iPhones but should work with any device that has Qi compatibility.
Set up: This one is going to be short because it is too easy. Unbox, plug in and put where you want it! There is a DC charging plug which will provide enough output for the 20W combined (10W per spot).
Use: As stated, I am a nighttime charger, so I put it on overnight. I have had zero problems with it not charging properly so far. There is a nice little white light next to each spot showing you found the sweet spot to charge. I charge my phone on it, wireless earbuds and Samsung Watch.
Any complaints I put in the “Cons” section are minor and do not really bother me, a great device!

Simple and effective
on August 31, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary: The review is for three devices, so I installed It on my MacBook Pro, a Windows desktop, and my Android phone. Overall, the software works well and is extremely simple to use. In my review time, I never had any issues or positive virus results, not that I was looking for them and that it is normal or anything… but it did well using few resources.
Pros:
- Extremely simple interface
- Easy to get around
- Scans are non-intrusive
- Provides real-time protection
- Works alongside your existing antivirus if needed with no issues
Cons:
- Not many power user options
- No firewall or other extras provided by other security software
Installation:
My copy was digital, so I downloaded the software from the Malwarebytes website, installed it on my devices, and entered my activation key. The software did an initial scan and then went into the dock to never be seen again. Hard to elaborate on this section as it is extremely straight forward and is meant to run in the background.
Use:
The interface is simple with only three “tabs”. 1: Detection history 2: Scanner and 3: Real-time Protection. The 1st one will tell you how many items you have in quarantine. The 2nd allows you to scan your system and set up scheduled scans and the 3rdx will tell you if you have malware protection and app block enabled. The only other option on the menu is my account option and some simple settings.
This software is simply to find and remove malware on your computer. Do not expect it to do much more. It does not do firewalls, it does not block spam from your email, it does not provide password protection, and so on. It does one thing and it does it extremely well. Having dug into the product further, it appears to get great reviews on virus definitions compared to the competition. I was not about to go to websites in pursuit of viruses just to see if it will work so I will take the expert's option on it.
On my PC desktop, I have it running alongside Norton and it is one of the few antivirus software out there that can run alongside with no conflict.
The android version was very straightforward and simply scans your apps installed. It does not appear to take a big hit on battery.
Performance:
On Android, a scan can take a long time so I would start it while charging or have it do it in the evening while you sleep.
I am scanning on a 256 GB Mac drive right now and it took 5.51 minutes to scan with the drive about ½ full.
On the Mac, the software uses four threads and uses about 1.4% of the CPU while scanning. Also, while scanning it uses about 86 MB of memory. While idle I found it used below 0.0% of CPU and 88 MB of memory. I didn’t test long term battery drain but with the CPU usage I am seeing, I would imagine it has little impact.

WOW Factor of 5!
on August 28, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
Summary: This is probably one of the coolest things I have had a chance to play with in a while! I remember in the 90’s when I got my first force feedback joystick for space simulators and it was a game changer… the G923 racing wheel provided me the same experience and wow factor with supported games. Here is my review of the racing wheel.
Pros:
• Feels like a real wheel
• Force feedback feels extremely real
• Pedals have proper resistance
• Mounting brackets work on most tables
• Minimal cables needed
• Easy setup
Cons
• Bulky, hard to store
• Had a few setup issues with some games
• All features not widely supported
• Pedals can slide around on carpet
Unboxing: The interior of the box is pretty straight forward. Inside you will find very basic documentation, the wheel, pedals and required cables. The product is neatly packed and feels very shock resistant. I was very much impressed with the product as there is leather, aluminum accents (blue) and metal shift pedals. The pedals are metal as well. All items have great weight and feel premium.
Setup: The product is mostly plug and play. Plug in the wheel to power, plug the pedals to the wheel and plug the USB cable into the computer. After that, install the Logitech software to get proper support. When you first plug it in to the computer or xbox, the wheel will rotate itself to the max range of motion and it is pretty cool to see. On the PC, after installing the software, the product would not recognize my actions in the test panels, but the issue was corrected after a computer reboot and never reoccurred. Xbox had no issues.
Use: I mainly test on the PC with some minor testing on Xbox One X. I purchased the game GRID (2019) as it supports 100% of the features on this wheel. On Xbox I test with Forza Horizon 4 which does not support the force feedback but does support the use of a wheel.
The WOW factor was instantly there in Grid. The wheel will transfer any bump, slip, crash or vibration to your hands. Keep in mind, this is not a rumble or bump like most force feedback, it feels like the actually feel you will obtain in a real car. If you slide your car out of control, the wheel will feel like you have lost traction. If you hit another car, you will feel the wheel simulating a push to the other side. It is amazing! The pedals work well. I found the brake to be a little on the stiff side which was only an issue on carpet as it caused the base to slide if I took my other foot off the base to stabilize it. On floor, it held fairly well.
On Xbox I tested with Forza Horizon 4 which is supported with the exception of force feedback. It works pretty well and is highly responsive, but it did not feel necessary.
There are only two games on their website that support all the features as of now. They are Grid (2019) and Assetto Corsa Competitzione for Xbox and PC. I hope more games will support the force feedback feature as it is amazing. I would love to play Forza games with this feature.

Great at keeping your stuff safe!

I got this product thinking I wouldn’t have to use it but to provide peace of mind should a surge or power outage occur. Oddly enough, the day I received it I had a power outage in the California heat waves so got to do some good testing!
Summary: A great peace of mind item that will prevent equipment damage and ensure you can keep the internet running or save files before losing data in the event of power loss.
Pros:
-Non-obtrusive design
-Easy set up
-Great battery capacity
-Easy to swap batteries
-USB port
-Lots of connections
-Could use a USB-C port
-Nothing else I can think of!
Unboxing: When the power went out, it was still in the box and I had yet to set it up. Toward the afternoon our power went out and I tore it open. I didn’t expect much since I hadn’t charged it but gave it a shot. Inside the box there is great protection around the unit to keep it safe. There is a manual inside and the unit and nothing else. The box has some heft to it.
Set up: To use for the first time, you must insert a little jumper on the bottom into the slot it is next to, this will enable the connection to the battery and allow it to charge/discharge. The battery is lead acid so I expect long charging times, but it can hold a great capacity. After plugging it into the wall, there are six outlets for backup/surge protection and three outlets for surge protection only. There is also a USB-A port in the top as well. With the power out, I plugged it into my Netgear internet router/modem combo.
Use: It turns out there was plenty of juice in the batter when I first set it up without charging. For the next hour while power was out, we were the only Wi-Fi router available in the neighborhood. It wasn’t really needed but cool to have full speed and the battery savings from not having to use LTE on our phones. Batteries are rated for five years before needing replacement and the instructions state you should get a notification on the unit if there is battery failure.
I didn’t get a chance to try it out since I am running a Mac but the instructions states that you can use the PowerChute software to configure settings in the UPS which can save files on your computer then shut it down so you don’t lose too much battery in the event of power loss.

Great for kids, minor issues hold it back
on August 1, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
First off, my kid loves these, that's the most important part.
I jumped on these as my child has not been able to find any good quality headphones for his age and has recently got into gaming on his switch and tablet. I tested using them in wired and wireless mode using Youtube Music on high quality and Tidal to test Master and Hi-Fi audio quality. Testing was conducted on a MacBook Pro 16 and a iPhone 11 Pro. Testing was a little difficult as an adult wearing children’s headphones for fit so please keep that in mind while reading.
Pros:
-Good audio quality overall
-Fun design
-Comfortable fit
-Wired and wireless options
-Microphone retracts
-Volume limiting
Cons
-Micro USB charging (no USB-C)
-Aux cable connects to headphones vis USB-C, hard to replace
-Audio quality (vocals) mixed bag
Unboxing:
Opening has generic but fun packaging. Inside you will find the headphones, documentation, a Aux to Micro-USB cord and a USB A to Micro USB cord for charging. There is no included power adaptor.
Set up: After an initial charging (red LED will turn blue when charged), I paired it with my MacBook Pro to test connectivity, microphone quality with various settings and wired quality. Bluetooth pairing is simple with holding the power button for a few seconds and then pairing in your bluetooth menu. Any console that supports bluetooth profiles will work fine with this, if there is a special proprietary connection required you might run into issues. In that situation you will utilize the AUX cable to connect audio to your device.
Use / Audio quality: On the Mac book, I actually was pretty impressed. Using Tidal, I tested a variety of songs from High quality to Master quality. Music by Charli XCX had pretty impressive and clean bass for children headphones. Most vocals on Tidal were good quality. Rock music in Youtube Music sounded a little muffled, I was unsure if this was due to the compression in YouTube Music or the headphones. I compared the song Words, Hands, Hearts by Yellowcard to the Tidal version and did notice a difference while wired. YT Music was muffled while Tidal’s version was just quiet in comparison so I am sure compression is a factor as might be the DAC inside the headphones. Children won’t care but since this is a review, I thought I would nitpick. Of note, voices on YouTube videos sounded very dull, music tracks were mostly good to go. I assume this is due to the above issue with music.
Testing wired on Master was overall a nice experience aside from the boring vocals, I noticed that on MacBook the bluetooth profile will default to AAC which was interesting, I assumed the headphones would only support SBC. As a result, I did not notice any lag in videos.
I tested the microphone recording in “compressed” and in “lossless” on MacBook. Compressed had noticeable background static but sounded pretty accurate. Lossless seemed to have got rid of much of the static and was much better. I also ensure the settings were set to 96000 Hz in the MIDI audio controls.
Connectivity:
Wired are wireless are the options here. I was able to see AAC and SBC profiles on bluetooth. No APT-X as far as I can tell. I think most people will used the wired mode on consoles. I believe the PS4 supports bluetooth so you can likely connect it wirelessly to that. Xbox does not so you will have to go the wired route on that, same goes for the switch.
Cell phone and PC connectivity is outstanding if you have an Aux port or bluetooth. I would go for the wired connection when available as I felt it sounded much better on these headphones. On a commute in a bus or train, I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference though.
Battery life / extra notes:
Battery life is rated for 22 hours but I was unable to run them down in my review time so it must be pretty good overall. There is no noise cancellation on these but provide good isolation due to their design.

Better than expected

This case is something a little different for the better. The one I received is the “down under” model which comes in green with orange accents. It looks pretty cool in person. The case has an interesting ocean styling but is different since it is made out of recycled plastic. The website advertises that it is made from 85% ocean-based recycled plastic, specifically salvaged fishing gear.
In short, if you like sustainable products, this is worth taking a look at. In use, it does feel very plastic, but it is thick enough that it feels it will protect your phone well. It is supposed to be drop proof up to six feet, but I wasn’t about to test that.
The packaging advertises that if you receive this case, they will donate a dollar to an ocean based environmental organization of your choosing (from the list of choices). The site is simple and works well.
The case fits like a glove and is actually somewhat minimal in style compared to the gel cases I have been using. The wave styling provides an interesting texture for holding on to and feels nice in the hand. I think I will buy a 2nd one for the wife!
Tip: It looks extra amazing in the green variant of the iPhone 11.

Best mouse out there
on July 10, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this when I received it. I have never used a mouse designed for Mac other than ones designed by apple and reliant on gestures. After a day of use, I have to say that this is probably the highest quality mouse I have ever used!
Unboxing: The packaging is very Apple-esque. The materials are high quality and neatly packaged. Inside there is the mouse, a USB-C cable and documentation.
Setup: I went the bluetooth route. The device appears to support Logitech’s Unifying device dongle, but I did not see one in the box. Bluetooth setup on my MacBook Pro was simple enough adding it in the bluetooth menu. The package states you should download the “Logitech Options” software from Logitech. I was unable to get it working on my Mac initially but was notified of an update after installing which fixed the issue. The software should allow you to customize buttons for use in software such as Photoshop.
Use: It is great! The ergonomics are outstanding for right-handed individuals. There are three buttons on the top (wheel included), a button to change the wheel from smooth scrolling to course, two buttons above the thumb, a horizontal scroll wheel (smooth scrolling), and a small button under the thumb. I was a little confused by the last button, but I noticed in the instructions in the Logitech software that it is a gesture button. You have to hold it down and move the mouse to get things like mission control, switching desktops, and so on. Once you get the hang of it it is very useful.
The mouse is highly accurate, the wheels feel like they are floating as it uses what they call “magspeed”. I found the horizontal wheel a little strange. It feels nice and I thought it would be great for Mac, but it has a few quarks as well as amazing features. First, using the wheel in spreadsheets, browsing photos and large documents allows easy scrolling. In Lightroom, it will allow you to control navigation a little easier, Word will use it for zoom, Photoshop will use it for brush sizes, Word will use it for zoom, Premiere will use it to scroll through the timeline. The side buttons are also remapped depending on the app. I liked how in Premiere and Office apps, they will undo-redo actions. The supported apps are low right now, but I am sure more will come with time. Right now, they are mostly limited to Safari, Chrome, Office apps, Photoshop and Premier.
Summary: This phone takes a little getting used to, but once you got it, it is a productivity powerhouse. It will make your workflow faster and be easier on the hands than a trackpad. This thing is amazing.

A perfect little charger
on July 8, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
So far, this is the best wireless charger I have tried.
Unboxing: Pretty straight forward, a small box with the unit inside, a micro USB cable and a power connector. I was a little surprised it used micro USB and not USB-C. I supposed for a 10W charger it shouldn’t need a lot of power, but just another type of cable to have in case you lose it or it gets damaged.
Setup: Again, straightforward. Plug it in, toss your phone on and you are GTG!
Use: As far are wireless chargers go, this one is very well thought out. It is small and will work on most Qi supported devices at up to 10W if your device supports that. There are grips on the bottom and on the top so it is unlikely your device will slide around; this is the best part. The white one looks nice like a small hockey puck on the table and can be put aside easily.
Summary: Not a whole lot to say about this device as it works as advertised and has a few nice improvements over other competitors such as grips. If you choose a wireless charger, I highly recommend this one.

Amazing gaming monitor
on June 15, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
This thing is a beast! I’ll get the only negative out in the open first thing… it isn't 1440p or 4k. Ok, now that that is out of the way, time to talk praise!
Unboxing: I opened it wrong. I went straight for the tape like I have been trained to do through a life of unboxing… there is a better way. On the box you will find four plastic plugs / tabs on the sides, simply pull them off and the packaging opens up from the top. Inside you will find the monitor (with some assembly), a Display port cable, HDMI cable, USB 3.0 cable with a B to A connector (b side in the monitor, a side in the PC). There is documentation and not much else. It is nicely packaged and well protected.
Set up: Relatively easy. The assembly is simple, put the stand in place, plug it all in, route the cables in the routing area and gtg! I plugged it into my PC, I have an Alienware R7 with a GeForce 2070 in it. The monitor is listed as G-sync compatible. I also tried it on a generic PC with a AMD Radeon RX 5700 in it. I tried it on Alienware first to test out the G-sync capabilities. At first, I thought I misread something as the monitor setting showed only Freesync. I turned it on, went to the Nvidia Control Panel and saw it only showed 60 hz. I had to dig a bit but was able to find 240 hz option and all games worked flawlessly with G-sync after disabling vsync, unlocking the FPS limits and adjusting the Hz in some of the menus.
Freesync was a little simpler on my other PC, it recognized it right away and I did not have to do anything special other than adjust the in-game settings.
I was very impressed with the build quality and extra features… by this I mean you can easily tilt the screen 90 degrees, there is a wide range of viewing angles, the lighting features look really cool and there are loads of extra ports including USB 3.0 A connections.
Use: Resolution is limited to 1920x1080. This is fine for gaming and helps to ensure good frame rates, if you are used to a 4k monitor this might be a little hard at first. It still looks great overall though. On my GeForce 2070 I was getting between 100-140 fps in Star Wars: Battlefront II which made for a great experience. Overwatch was silky smooth always staying above 100 fps. It is easy to see the difference between 60 fps and 100 fps when compared and it is hard to go back once you have experienced it.
Summary: This monitor is amazing. It is stylish, has lots of inputs, performs remarkably well and supports both Freesync and G-Sync. Go get it!

Perfect for a room, garage or dorm
on June 8, 2020
Posted by: psyclopps
from San Diego, CO
A pretty good product that looks stylish in any room.

Unboxing: The unboxing experience is easy. Cut the cable ties (2), lift the box off the bottom portion and you are done! No need to cut the tape in the top of the box. There is not much inside other than the fridge and all the packaging, but you will also find documentation, the door handle hardware inside the fridge and that's pretty much it. The fridge is light enough for a one person lift but it is a little unwieldy to carry around in tight spaces.
Product quality: I was quite impressed. The build quality is sturdy even though it is lightweight. I am not sure of the exact metal used but I would guess a strong aluminum. With a good amount of weight on it did not bend or buckle. I found the feet a little wobbly in my garage at first but then I noticed some of the feet are adjustable which fixed the issue. The door handle is not installed when you unbox it but it is inside the fridge door and is easy to install with simple house tools. It looks better than expected in person. I was a little cautious of the avocado color, but it looks very nice in my garage. The retro styling is great for any room and draws attention.
Use: After plugging the fridge in, it worked just fine. It has a little hum that is a little louder than your normal kitchen fridge in my opinion, but it is not too loud. I think the sound is appropriate for the garage or leaving it in a basement room, but I probably would notice it if it were in my bedroom for some reason. It gets decently cold for drinks and has an adjustable thermostat inside. There is a small freezer on the top of the interior which can hold a decent number of small items. The door has angled drink holders for easy access.
Summary: At 2.5 cu ft, it is not going to hold a lot of food but is a great second fridge to hold drinks, TV dinners, frozen burritos, and similar items. It is ideal for the garage, a bachelor pad, or a small guest house. Now, off to stock it with drinks and burritos.

Game was not tested properly
By skullboy88 from Los Angeles, CA
First of all the reason for such a low rating is that the game is not playable. Right out the box. Now, I have been building pc's for over 10 years and have sunk hundreds of dollars into my rig to play the most demanding games. And I do. The problem is that ID software sent out a game to the public that is not finished. Google, rage graphics problems and you will find a magnitude of arcticles about poor graphics bad drivers and other issues. AMD and Nvidia have been working for a driver patch but reports from many say they do not work to fix the tearing and poor rendering . People are paying $60.00 for a pc game. Dont you think it should work right away without having to wait for a patch?

To be fair, a patch has since been release which fixes many of these PC problems including better support for video cards and settings.

Horrid Sound
By DELienz from Delaware
I had pair of Sony Headphones that I bought a few years ago for approx. $50 dollars... Sounded Amazing, but I recently ran then over with my car... Anyway bought these assuming the sound would be similar and also compensate for my only complaint with my other heardphones which was falling constantly out of my ear during workouts. Turns out these are more expensive but that sound terrible. Tried changing the setting on my IPOD and there is no overcoming the lack of bass. I am a auidiophile and I do listen to music a lot of double bass and drums so bass is something I must have in a headphone. If that's what you looking for don't buy these. I'm confident cheaper headphones with the same quality sound can be obtained so I would not recommend these to anyone...

Balanced Armature
June 28, 2012
Balanced Armature headphones are designed to sound like the original recording. Most headphones these days are "dynamic armature" which are designed kind of like a hardware equilizer where bass is usually most important. Any of these balanced armature headphones are aimed specifically at audiophiles as they repoduce very true to original sound with detailed mid ranges and highs.

Lenovo y500?

Ok so I was really looking forward to buying the lenovo ideapad y500 i5 version for $889.98. It said it was sold out but I wasn't worried, figuring it would be restocked in around a week. However, today I looked and it's been taken off the site. It's a shame because it was an amazing laptop, and I couldn't believe it was taken off. I was also wondering WHY it had been taken off. It seemed to make no sense. I would see if it had bad reviews and problems, but the lenovo had 2 ratings, both 5 star! I was very dissapointed and it looks like I'll have to go to TigerDirect and try to find it. If there's something I might not know, please tell me.
Thanks
Though I could not answer any specifics as the reasoning, I might be able to speculate. I have seen the Y series as very well configured for amazing prices in places. After reading reviews, a common trend mentioned of sub par build quality, most notably the touch pad would sink into the chassis. This would be enough to anger me after purchase. For the price, it might still be well worth it though.
